Has anyone played Sid Meiers Pirates? It's on Steam at $19.95, saving $10. I played the MMO stress test for Burning Sea and thought very little of it so wanting something to fill in my Pirate quota (yaarrr!).

Does anyone know if it's a singleplay RPG/open ended or is it just a story based thing?

It's not as good as the original that came out on the Amiga and ST in prehistoric times, but still fun if you look past the daft cartoony style and stupid voice acting. You're limited only by the amount of years you live 'pon the seas, and your end status is governed by how much you achieve in your life, for example you can try to seduce and marry a wench, and find hidden inca treasure, and kill notorious pirates and plunder their booty. If you're that way inclined. But the bulk of the gameplay is sailing around the Caribbean, getting notoriety and adding ships to your fleet.

Personally, I recommend Age of Pirates by Firaxis instead which you can get for a similar price - it looks very similar to Potbs, but plays like Sid Miers Pirates. You must download and install Supermod though or the game will be buggy as hell. Yarr.

That game is god awful.
It has what is probably the worst control scheme I've ever seen in a game.

The only part I liked about it was naval combat, when you're on land... prepare for WTFness.

Iirc, you have to hold down the left mouse button to walk around and right click to back up, you can't aim your gun, sword combat is clunky as shit, and other stuff I can't remember atm.

It's ok. It held my attention for about a week and then I got bored of it. (Pirates).

The naval portion gets too easy too fast. With some tricky maneuvering and decent swordplay (very easy) you can get a massive ship right off the bat with a ton of cannons and then the naval section of the game is just cake.

When you have to go on land to find treasure or family members, the game just gets shitty.

Pirates is some of the most fun you can have on a PC imho. Looks great, plays great, lots of fun--never the same game twice!

I got bored after 30 minutes or so. It gets samey very quickly and everything seems simplified which doesn't allow for much depth.

One of these days... I hope to make my own pirate game. It'll be an incredible sandbox experience, and even allow such strange things as having your ship destroyed, in a storm for instance, and washing ashore on some island with just you or even your crew mates. You can either wait around to be found... mete out an existence as best you can, or build your own means to make it off the island which could or might not be successful.

That and oh so much more.

Damn, I only wish I had the ability to create such a game, and not dream about it. Good thing I'm working on learning C#.

Might have to be a text game to begin with. :|
