This is the first time I've heard this which was quite recently, but when you turn 18 you have to sign up for military service so they can draft your ass in case they need more meat puppets. What would the repercussions of avoiding this be? Has anyone here actually signed for it?

Conscription in the United States (also called compulsory military service or the draft) has been employed several times, usually during war but also during the nominal peace of the Cold War. The United States discontinued the draft in 1973, moving to an all-volunteer military force, thus there is currently no mandatory conscription.

However, the Selective Service System remains in place as a contingency plan; men between the ages of 18 and 25 are required to register so that a draft can be readily resumed if needed.

Are you talking about the second paragraph?

I can't imagine getting in too much trouble if you don't. I did awhile ago.

There's no way that the US will ever rely on the draft again.

Either way, I'm pretty sure you can also get out of it if you have a good medical reason.

I have tourettes, so I'm likely to shoot friendlies on accident whilst yelling "****" "SHIT" "GODDAMN"

It hasn't been prosecuted in forever. Last one was 1986.

I signed up back when I was 18... but I'm nearly 25 now which is the age I think it doesn't affect me much anymore if it ever comes around.

I don't remember actually signing up for anything, but I did receive my Selective Service card a little while after I turned 18.

Feds ain't come knockin' yet so all must be good.

I believe you HAVE to. I know I did. I'm almost certain it's illegal to refuse without a good reason IE: Strict Religion or medical condition (Funny how Religion can keep you from being drafted, but philosophical ideologies can't.)

Anyways, you just heard about this NOW? Boy you dummmmm.

I'm sorry I couldn't hear you over the sound of you screaming as your gay boyfriend pounds your gay homo butthole as you jack your shit to Veg's sister like a lonely 35 year old weeaboo basement dweller who cums on anime figurines and posts them on the net.

fuk dis shit mutha fuka

I'm signing up for the USAF once I turn 17 anyway.

I never got my card in the mail, but I'd fill it out and mail it back in an instant. The military is a great thing to be a part of, becoming stronger and better at, well, almost anything. Opens a lot of doors for a lot of great opportunities if thats your thing. (I'd take the 20 years and retire with full benefits)

Selective service act, brah. See ya in Iran.

Though I did write that I was a Conscientious Objector opposed to war in all forms on my card.

Nevermind the benefits, you don't have any moral qualms about being part of such an organisation?

The.. selective service and training act?

The peace-time draft that was used exclusively prior to world war 2 and almost never used afterward?

If it ever comes to the point where we have to pull on that, I think we'll be screwed and pulled into a massive conflict anyway.

Man, I'd laugh at your country if it wheren't so sad. You guys mock Korea and former soviet etc. with their propaganda shit, but it's pretty much the same bullshit that you have been spoonfeed all your fat life.. American freedom brah! **** YEAH! FREEDOM FRIES! God bless the Patriot act. Want to detain a suspect indefinitely without even a trial? Call him a terrorist, and you guys will even support it. You make me sick. ****. Keep your guns. You'll need them to collectivly blow your brains out now that I droped some knowledge.

But, I'd bet that willieh look nice in a uniform though.

I was simply stating that's why he has to fill out the piece of paper broheimian

I remember getting a letter through the mail when I was 17 or 18 saying "we can conscript you if we really need you, k?". Well, mkay, but don't count on me, I'll simply align with the winning side.

We pay our soldiers shit.

And we have all those mercenary contractors there getting paid shitloads more.

What do you mean?
Well, the army is responsible for the deaths of countless of innocent people, that doesn't bother you? Even if you don't yourself partake in such activities, you still endorse them by being part of the organisation.

Not really. People die, fact.

Its inevitable, one day, you too will die Monkey. Just because they were killed in combat, even if not armed, well it was bound to happen one day anyway.

Eh, I doubt you'll ever be conscripted, unless invaded by

#1. Aliens
#2. Ancient Evil Being Set On Destroying All Life

Me, I know that I'll be conscripted, and I have to take the damn physicals again. I know that I'll be "Active, Fit for, Class 1", so why bother? It's a waste of time, just tell me when to go and I'll come and dig trenches and shit. But nooo, if I don't comply, I get 3 years in prison. Don't know about the US, though.

Also, military service, for a couple of years, is a great way of serving your country, and the ideals for which it stands for. Never mind voting, never mind flag waving, this is a chance to do some real patriotic work. Afraid that you'll get shot and killed, or burnt to a cinder in some godforsaken dessert that you never knew existed until you got deployed? Everybody has to die sometime, why not now? Why not for something that's infinitely more important than yourself?

*hums "It's a Good Day to Die"*

Perfect physical condition? Or are you aiming for something that doesn't require flight?

Seriously, that is my response.

EDIT:

Don't people die anyway? Besides that, the army is also responsible for keeping alive countless innocent people. Collateral damage is, sometimes necessary. It doesn't mean that it's acceptable, but in the end, it counts towards the greater good.

It helps if you try to maintain a kind of perspective focused on a single group instead of the entire human race.

Willy mate. We're in the same boat it seems.

However I probably am the one who WILL get conscripted.

Not quite perfect, but certainly better than some other people I know. Going to be constantly working until then to get myself into even better shape.

If the flight thing doesn't work out, I have the test scores, literacy, and more than sufficient analytical thinking to be an officer. If I worked hard enough I could likely attain a fairly high rank in a short period of time. If I decided to keep at it as my career, that is.

Hey, good for you. :D I do hope that you get to fly. My friend passed all the physicals and aced the academic tests for the Air Force Academy, but he developed some kind of little twitch in his left hand - a minor nerve condition - and the board failed him. Little things get dreams ruined. :/

Also, officer is good. But you do know that you'll prolly have to go university first, right (so 17 would be no-go, :p)? Or is there some kind of Air Force officer training program in the US, other than ROTC or West Point and its equivalents?

Lastly, on a personal note, is your mother OK with your plans? :p I just want to know how other mothers react when told about plans of military service. Mine beat the crap out of me.

I cant believe anyone can sign up straight out of Uni (assuming theyre, say, below the age of 22 or around that age) and become an officer.

They have to lead a squad in battle and would, I imagine, just crap themselves. And theyre expected to lead men older than them? The 'veterans'? Look at WW2. Probably being ignorant.

Weirdly, Ive always thought I would do well in a war. Maybe I should try Airsoft first...

I live in the UK so I don't have to so much as look at a Army recruitment pamphlet unless I am of the mind to do so.

Sucks to be you Numbers, sucks to be you, American-regulars.

Sux to be all o' yous.

Eh, you either got to have ROTC or do several months of officer training - the University part is just so that they know you have at least the basic amount of intelligence.

And that's why the military has NCOs and sergeants to guide the newbie officers around. That's what they're for.

Eh, at least the government feeds and clothes us for about 2 to 3 years of our lives.
