Silent Hunter IV Pacific Campaign

Never did get my head around firing solutions. Damn my stupidity.

You have to have a major in math to understand that. Luckily enough you can also let the computer make those solutions. That's what I like so much about SHIII: the scalability of the difficulty. According to the IGN preview it's even better in SHIV.

Does the captain even make the solutions himself in submarines? I'd expect the weapon officer to be in charge of that sorta things?

I really wish I could've got into this game.

But Starforce was just wreaking so much havoc on my machine that it had to go. :(

Shakermaker, well how authentic is Das Boot? I mean I know it's based on a novel by the real captain but afterall, it's a movie.

I am quite sure the captain worked out the firing solutions. Check out this page on Uboat.net about the crews on U-boots. There is no weapon officer. This page is pretty cool too; it has information on all the U-boot aces.

It's been confirmed that SHIV won't have Starforce.

Well, that's good...

Too bad it looks like I'll have to wait awhile to play it.

lol the last silent hunter game i played was on nintendo.. it rocked. :)

Just installed the game. Downloading the patch now. I'll post screens and impressions later.

Jimbo, you have the game yet?

oi oi, no i was checking the review at pc.ign but only had a chance to glance at it, 9.5 for graphics, nice, is it any good? whats it run like?

It's not the game it could have been, but I am quite happy overall. What I don't like is that there still isn't proper AA so it looks a bit edgy. And the resolution is, like SH3, set at 1024x768. You can change the resolution for the toolbar though ... It all looks very good though. There is way more detail on the ships and the water graphics are great. There is this weird bug that crashes the game when you hit the A-key. That's the one for maintaining depth so you don't use it that often but still. You don't want to press A when you haven't saved yet. That's the only big bug I found so far. I found the whole experience quite polished. There are more details now. For example, you now get way more radio messages during the campaign, even a daily newsbulletin about how the war is going. Over all I found it as much fun as SH3, so if you liked that, you'll probably like SH4 too.

:o

I'm not playing this one 'til my dissertation is in.
More radio contact is great. I cant wait to get stuck into this game :)

What kind of rig are you guys using to play this? I've never played an SH but it looks kind of interesting, just wondering how it'll run (and if I'll have enough skeelz).

I am running this on an AMD 3500+, 4x 512MB RAM, and a Club3D X850XT. I can't have all the bells and whistles on but it still looks very purdy.

Quite similar to my rig, although mine tends to underperform fsr. Might give this game a shot anyhow.

You'll love it. It's everything SH3 was but more. The messages, more traffic, bigger playing area, more subs to chose from, etc. Although to be fair, some things are lacking: the crew isn't as interactive as it was for example.

I just got my special edition, I really like the game, BUT, I found it a bit hard to get used to the new UI.
Anyway, I finally got a decent hang of manual torpedo targetting thanks to the people at SubSim.com's forums, so now I lpay with 100% realism :D

Hardcore, nice. I don't do manual trageting. I am finding it hard enough as it is at 65% realism. And the SubSim forums are greating. If you look at their mod forum you'll find one that changes the control scheme back to the SH3 scheme.

Shakermaker, manual targetting is actually really easy because the US navy had the best and most advanced targetting comps, believe it or not, my biggest issue with torpedoes now, is the actual manual identification of shipclass, which can be a real bitch at night.:p

Patch 1.2 will be released early next week if all goes well.

Patch log:

################################################################################

4. Changes in Patches

################################################################################

HARD DRIVE SPACE

Windows will require additional free hard drive space for its operating system
(virtual memory). If you encounter the following message in an error dialog:
"Ran out of virtual memory", free up some more hard drive space.

To install Silent Hunter 4 - Wolves of the Pacific - Patch V 1.2 you will need approximately 200 MB free hard disk space for the full patch.

NEW FEATURES

1. Modified the game rendering to accept FSAA and fixed high resolution rendering.
2. Added "Volumetric Fog" as a stand alone option, no longer member of the "Environmental Effects".
3. Added a new sound volume option, "Radio Volume", that controls the Radio and Gramophone volume.

GAMEPLAY CHANGES

1. Tuned the submarines efficiency mechanics
2. Fixed the damage model for the Kinposan Maru/Medium Modern Split Superstructure Freighter
3. Tuned the malfunction rates for torpedoes. Mk 10 Torpedoes will be more reliable now, as per historical data. Go Sugar boats!
4. Improved the Periscope/TBT torpedo status panel by making only the currently loading tube blink, instead of all that are in the queue
5. Tuned the submarines damage model
6. Added a new tuning option for the radio news/music volume ratio

BUG FIXES

1. Fixed a sound volume issue where some sound volumes were ignored in the game.
2. Removed crashes in replay and multiplayer.
3. Fixed a bug where refit in friendly harbors would not refit the cannon ammunition.
4. The "Maintain Current Depth" command (letter 'A') crash was fixed.
5. Position Keeper for negative bearings fix.
6. Fixed a bug where explosions were played in the scene after a load or a replay even if the explosion took place a long time ago.
7. Fixed the 'invisible monolith' that, if looking at it, will greatly reduce FPS.
8. Fixed a bug where the difficulty settings of the game were ignored in multiplayer. The game now starts with the selected settings from the session page.
9. Fixed a bug where, sometimes, if pressing the Stadimeter button the game would crash.
10. Fixed a bug where, When hovering over highlatable objects in 3d career room, the texture would dissapear.
11. Fixed a bug where, when pressing SHIFT+F2 in any 2d page the game would crash.
12. Fixed the bug in adversarial where the Escort Commander could see your submarine on the navigation map even if the sub was underwater.
13. Fixed a bug where the name on the captain's watch appears to be "Stevens". Nah, just kidding Smile
14. Fixed the SD Air Search radar so that it no longer detects ships.
15. Fixed the Torpedo drag model. Now high speed torpedoes will hit fine.

About time, I own the limited edition(Only 3000 copies in the world so it is truly limited), installed the game as soon as I recieved it, uninstalled it 2 hours later due to all the bugs.>_<

Yup, and besides, if you are one of those critters whom have warezed the game and played it thinking you've succesfully cracked it, think again, the game uses FADE copyprotection system, which basically is made to fill the game with bugs after a short while so it becomes unplayable.:p

I'm not one of those critters. I didn't bother after hearing about all the bugs and then the anti-hack bugs too :P

Patch 1.2 has been released.

Be sure to return to port first if you're currently doing a patrol / mission, otherwise your save might be fooked up.
