simple Q. Whats HDR?

It's something so great and magical that nobody can grasp it, but everyone desperatly needs it. :(

yeah.....thought of that the secound after i posted.....to bad...uummm...sorry...where are the headcrabs? :x

Looks like no ones knows the answer. They're in the same boat as you, KingPing.

well whatever it is source probably has it 'cause in the DX9 vid in the beginning it sais "Source High Dynamic Range Rendering"

Like that article says, it's just a way to have brightness values higher than the conventional ones. While the end result is still white because your monitor can't display anything brighter than white, the effect of a higher brightness can be simulated using gaussian and motion blurs.

So basically > if the contrast of a high value object/light with a low value environment is great enough, then the high values get picked out and a gaussian blur is applied to it for the bloom effect, and possibly a motion blur if you want glare effects too.

The funny thing is, everybody is looking for HDR in HL2 screenshots, and is all happy when they find something that they think is HDR, yet no one seems to know what it is. :)

IT IS SOMETHING THAT EVERY GAME HAS NOW! HL2 isn't as good as a game as you guys think.

lol, yeah. HL2 technology while being excelent. Is truthully not as good as many people think it is....

But every game does not have HDR just yet....

AFAIK, HL2 is the first game to incorporate HDR.

It isn't something "every game has now" and it isn't a for sure deal with HL2 either. It's an expensive effect, and according to Rick Ellis over at Valve, it may not make into the first iteration of HL2. HDR is not only exclusive to DX9 hardware, but it will kill performance on all but the latest cards from nVidia and ATi. It's a guarantee that HDR will be added in shortly after release via steam for those who can handle it, but it's up in the air for release since the last thing they need to do is spend time tweaking a feature that only 2% of the fan-base will be able to use anyway.

As far as I know, real HDR is limited purely to DX9 hardware because it requires 32 bit floating point precision which DX8 doesn't have (DX8 is just integers).

EDIT: Oh stupid me, I need to reed better, I thought you said that it's not exclusive to DX9 hardware, but you said 'it's not only limited to DX9 but also...' :(

Ignore me.

/me gets his coat.

Get the hell out of the thread Ryan!

nah, I'm just kidding ;) That was worded pretty poorly on my part

Question: How the feck can anything be brighter than white? :dork:

It adds things like if your looking through a square hole at a bright light the edges will be softened.

HDR is like the lochness monster. people think they see it, but they really dont. but it does exist.
