i just have a few really easy questions. Do you have to pay to download steam or is there a subscription service? Do you have to pay then to download the games? So basically whats the money situation like.

It's free to download the steam installer, then it gets interesting:

1)If you have already bought a Valve made game in the shops, you will not have to pay anything else, and as a gift, Valve will give you full access to the classic game lineup (It's called the Platinum Pack and has Half Life 1, Opposing Forces, Day Of Defeat, Ricochet, Team Fortress Classic & the dedicated game server system.)

2)If you have not bought a Valve game, you can buy the Platinum Pack online with a credit card.

3)Regarding Half Life 2, if you buy it at the shops, you will not have to pay anything else, only if you want to buy commercial addon products for it.

4)You will be able to buy HL2 online, for a one off fee.

5)You will be able to rent all of Valves games (Including HL2 and any future products) for a monthly fee for as long as you like.

All buying options include unlimited downloads, everything is tied to the account you set up when you install steam, so if you reformat you can redownload everything again if you so wish.

so if i bought the platinum pak over steam how much would that run me? i don't want to download steam just to figure this out.

Well I bought the platinum pack two years ago or so and it set me back about $50AU (Australian).

funny, i only bought CS, (retail) and i use that CD key on a burned copy of HL (seriously, i lost the cd case and cd with my other cd key on it), and it works PERFECTLY, when i typed it in, it gave me all the games. Wonder if it thinks i have the platinum pack :)

Once again, If you buy any of the old games, it'll give you the rest of the platinum pack for free.
