Sims 2 causes a system failure

I wouldn't normally ask about another specific game on these forums, I've tried all the logical routes to help for this and haven't come up with anything useful.

I just bought the Sims 2 a few days ago. The install went fine, it runs perfectly. The first few days I played it (not all day mind you... I mean it didn't start happening right away), everything was fine. Then I think it was 2 days ago, my computer would randomly reboot while playing the game. I had just installed a new hard drive and re-arranged the internals of my computer so I thought maybe that was the problem. After checking everything out, everything appears to be fine. After a while I realized that the random reboots only occured while playing the Sims 2 - no other applications or games (or just sitting idle) would cause this.

So, I did a search on Google, and found out that I wasn't the only one this was happening to. I also found out that the rebooting itself was actually a function of Windows (Win2k and XP at least, not sure about other versions). Apparently, Windows will reboot itself on some crashes (Right-Click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Startup and Recovery, System Failure/Automatically Reboot)

In that dialog box I also noticed that it wrote an event to the event log... here's what the event says:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: Save Dump
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1001
Date: 10/3/2004
Time: 11:08:54 AM
User: N/A
Computer: DANSBIGBOX
Description:
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000050 (0xe47d3060, 0x00000001, 0xb73e6084, 0x00000001). Microsoft Windows 2000 [v15.2195]. A dump was saved in: C:\WINNT\Minidump\Mini100304-02.dmp.

I checked that file, and it isn't text so I'm not sure how to read it or what to make of it.

I think I read somewhere on EA's forums that this is a problem a lot of people with higher-end systems have.

My specs:
AMD Athlon XP 2800+
1 GB PC2700 Ram
Gigabyte 7N400L Motherboard (nForce2 Chipset) (latest drivers)
ATI RADEON 9800 Pro 256 MB (latest drivers)
Creative Soundblaster Audigy2 ZS Platinum
DirectX 9.0c
Win2k SP4 (all updates/patches)

I also tried calling EA's tech support. The rep that answered my call was the most useless excuse for tech support I've ever had to deal with (yes, that includes Dell). I had read somewhere that this might have something to do with DirectX, so I mentioned that to him. After checking my specs and informing my that my computer *actually* exceeded the minimum recommended specs (thanks captain!!!), he told me that it *must* be a Microsoft issue if it has to do with DirectX. I really REALLY wanted to reach through the phone and slap the stupid out of him.

So, that's where I am. EA's phone and web support are useless, and I still can't figure out how to make this work. Any suggestions?

Sims 2 crashes at my computer too. It doesn't restart, it just crashes. The error message actually says that "the game has crashed" too :)

isnt that a shame...
but seriosly what are yur complete specs and what drivers are you using right now

Oops, thanks for the quick replies, but I wasn't done posting... please re-read :)

my sims too runs perfecto-mundo!

1.8ghz p4
768mb ram
ATI radeon 9600xt

and i have everything on high!!

If you are using the Catalyst 4.9's... roll back to 4.8 and see if that fixes the problem. It worked for me.

You will probably have to do like me. Wait for a patch. Damn us for having high-end systems! I need to buy a new copy of the sims 2 as well, since cd-1 is broken .. Why can't they make the cd-locking-mechanism like other companies do it: Push the middle -> CD is released, instead of: Pull and bend the CD -> Hope it doesn't crack.. *sigh*

Oh man that sucks... I'm always do paranoid of that happening with new CDs/DVDs

Attempting rollback to Catalyst 4.8.

Just reinstalling the 4.8s will overwrite the existing drivers, right? Or will I have to uninstall first?

They recommend that you uninstall everything before reinstalling new drivers... but, in practice, it doesn't usually cause problems.

Done and done. I also tried disabling fastwrites since I've heard those can cause stability issues as well. I'll update next time I get a chance to play.

The crappy thing about this, is that it isn't really anything specific that causes the crash, so I can't just go in and try something... Just have to start playing and hope I won't have to do everything over again!

In my case, it would run anywhere from 10 seconds to an hour before crashing... and it didn't seem to be related to what I was doing.

... sounds like we had the same problem.

How do you know it isn't some weird conflict that the 4.9's have with certain hardware configurations (for example: we both have AMD processors while you have a P4 and all of us have different video cards)? You don't. You're speaking from your own limited experience with that set of drivers... and so am I. I'm just telling him that I had the exact same problem and the 4.9's were causing it.

hmm what does fast write do exactly anyways? and does my 9800 pro have it?

all radeons have it, don't disable it, it will cause system insatbility. Ummm...I actually forgot what it is for, i used to know. I THINK it has to do with AGP, but I'm not sure.

please post max amps for power supply on the following rails

+3.3/ +5/ +12/

it can be found on the sticker on the side of your power supply

ex. +3.3/32a +5.32a +12/26a

OK i know i am going to get flamed for this, but, ok here goes; my computer started restarting when playing the sims 2. I refuse to roll back drivers, anyways when are the 4.10's comin out? don't they come out every month?

When I was running on an old Athlon system AGP Fast Writes caused random reboots in games and just plain using Windows. I disabled them and everything worked fine. When I upgraded to an Athlon64 system they didn't cause any problems... and neither did disabling them. They are a useless feature that does not increase performance (as one would assume from the name). I would recommend turning them off unless you have a hardware configuration that is somehow unstable without them.

Why do you refuse to use 4.8's? I mean... if they work fine, why not? Is there some other conflict with the 4.8's and another game/program you use?

Alright, I rolled back my drivers and turned off fastwrites/sideband addressing and everything's working fine now! Thanks!

4.8s have problems with 3dmark03, read the release notes. ALWAYS read catalyst release notes before downloading them, it says much stuff including issues fixed, and known issues when u install the drivers. Very important. To find them...

1. go to www.ati.com
2. search release notes
3. click a link that has a url to ANY catalyst rlease notes, normally it shows up like 3.7 for me.
4. on the url, it will have a part that is like "4_6" for catalyst 4.6, change it to say "4_9" for 4.9 and so on.

I don't know any other way of getting the rlease notes, as they are kind of hidden. But they are worth the time. deffinately.

I know that (and have for quite some time), but have you personally had problems with that specific set of drivers (on something that actually matters, unlike a useless benchmark that is only important in ego-stroking PC performance comparisons)? If you don't have problems with any programs that you use it doesn't matter what other "Known Issues" the release notes mention.

Have you actually tried them?

Also, the release notes for the 4.9 Catalysts don't mention fixing any problems with 3DMark03 that were present in the 4.8's... combined with the listing of 3DMark03 under "Issues Resolved in CATALYST Version 4.8" I would assume that you misunderstood something. I know that I (on multiple computers) have no problems with 4.8 Catalyst drivers and 3DMark03.

vell i myself dooo.

does any1 know when cat 4.10 come out?
