Sims 2 causes a system failure
I wouldn't normally ask about another specific game on these forums, I've tried all the logical routes to help for this and haven't come up with anything useful.
I just bought the Sims 2 a few days ago. The install went fine, it runs perfectly. The first few days I played it (not all day mind you... I mean it didn't start happening right away), everything was fine. Then I think it was 2 days ago, my computer would randomly reboot while playing the game. I had just installed a new hard drive and re-arranged the internals of my computer so I thought maybe that was the problem. After checking everything out, everything appears to be fine. After a while I realized that the random reboots only occured while playing the Sims 2 - no other applications or games (or just sitting idle) would cause this.
So, I did a search on Google, and found out that I wasn't the only one this was happening to. I also found out that the rebooting itself was actually a function of Windows (Win2k and XP at least, not sure about other versions). Apparently, Windows will reboot itself on some crashes (Right-Click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Startup and Recovery, System Failure/Automatically Reboot)
In that dialog box I also noticed that it wrote an event to the event log... here's what the event says:
Event Type: Information
Event Source: Save Dump
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1001

Description:
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000050 (0xe47d3060, 0x00000001, 0xb73e6084, 0x00000001). Microsoft Windows 2000 [v15.2195]. A dump was saved in: C:\WINNT\Minidump\Mini100304-02.dmp.
I checked that file, and it isn't text so I'm not sure how to read it or what to make of it.
I think I read somewhere on EA's forums that this is a problem a lot of people with higher-end systems have.
My specs:
AMD Athlon XP 2800+
1 GB PC2700 Ram
Gigabyte 7N400L Motherboard (nForce2 Chipset) (latest drivers)
ATI RADEON 9800 Pro 256 MB (latest drivers)
Creative Soundblaster Audigy2 ZS Platinum
DirectX 9.0c
Win2k SP4 (all updates/patches)
I also tried calling EA's tech support. The rep that answered my call was the most useless excuse for tech support I've ever had to deal with (yes, that includes Dell). I had read somewhere that this might have something to do with DirectX, so I mentioned that to him. After checking my specs and informing my that my computer *actually* exceeded the minimum recommended specs (thanks captain!!!), he told me that it *must* be a Microsoft issue if it has to do with DirectX. I really REALLY wanted to reach through the phone and slap the stupid out of him.
So, that's where I am. EA's phone and web support are useless, and I still can't figure out how to make this work. Any suggestions?
