Sin City

So is this out in America then? How long until it gets to the UK?

Don't make me download the damn thing... not that I would of course...

One of the most violent movies I have ever seen.

The dialogue kinda reminded me of Max Payne series, when the he was talking to himself (you'll see what i mean).

And it defintly deservers the 18+ rating... I mean, a guy gets his dick shot then his testicles ripped off...

Its a homage to film noir films (much like Max Payne 1 and 2 were).
But guy don't ruin the awesome parts for people who haven't seen the movie/read the comics ;). They need to see this for themselves.

I thought it was an excellent movie as well. A review I read called it the next big cult classic, in line with Pulp Fiction. I think the reviewer was right. The movie did exactly what it was trying to do and did it extremely well. Definately not a family movie, though. Some woman had her 4 year old daughter and 6ish year old son, and I thought 'what the hell is she thinking?'

Wooooo! Saw it last night and it ****in' rocked my face off!

omg, this movie is super super sweet.

I love it, I just read the review and it blows me away. I am going to see it as soon as it releases here in the UK.

Ok, don't hate me but Sin City was the biggest piece of garbage crap to be put on a roll of film and projected in theaters. The movie has ZERO plot!!! It's absolutely terrible... I don't know what to say it was so bad. There is this guy with a screwed up face who gets hit 6 times by a speeding car and walks away. Someone else jumps off a building and lands unharmed, and bullets seem to have NO EFFECT on people. Ok, so if you manage to get over the fact that every single person has superhero qualities, there are many more things lacking. I suggest no one sees this movie and not because it's sexist, not because its violent/gruesome, but because it's absolutely boring and you feel stupid watching it!!!

Two Big Problems:
1) WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH THE YELLOW DUDE??? That was the most stupid and wierd antagonist I have ever seen!!!

2) Why does blood look white and like bird **** sometimes, and it's red at other times? This even goes for the same people!!!

here's my summary:

Positive:

- Jessica Alba (worth alone the price of admission)
- black and white filming is very inventive and artistic
- The graphic effects were decent

Negative:

- plot seems to be an incomprehensable or trivial concept to the filmmakers of this one
- very graphic and sexist (it's ok for me but disgusts many others)
- boring; you feel like everyone is doomed one way or another. you have no feelings for the characters which makes you very apathetic to their tragedies or dilemas.

Conclusion:
This is definitely the worst movie I have seen in 2004 or 2005 and it's a contender for the worst movie I have ever seen. I don't know how the ciritics gave it such high scores.

Well, I figure the best review I could give would be just completely contradicting you, so here I go...

First of all: It wasn't supposed to be realistic, did you really expect this movie to be realistic? It's a modernized film noir... there are super-human main characters, disposable extras, and all that crap. People are gonna get hit by cars and jump out of windows, but that is acceptable when you realize that the movie you are watching isn't supposed to be realistic in any respect.

I wasn't bored for a second of the movie. Plenty of action, great dialogue, everything looks sweet to me. I was interested and on the edge of my seat through all of it.

Sexist? Once again, its a Film Noir. And what was sexist other than the fact that there were a bunch of badass assassin prostitutes and extremely hot chicks? Do all movies have to have a female heroin be a lead character to balance out the males now? What kind of shit is that, seriously?

Yellow Bastard was awesome, but I could see people being weird about it, I guess. Once again, it wasn't supposed to be realistic, and the character was being portrayed physically by his personality, as most of the characters were. A disgusting, fat, repulsive, smelly, yellow bastard.

The blood was white because you wouldn't be able to see it in many scenes if it were red. On top of that, they wanted to add lots of violence and keep the "comic" feel to it. They added white to a lot, lot, lot of scenes where you wouldn't possibly see white in real life, because it looks like a comic book.

I agree with the positive feedback, except for Jessica Alba. I really, really don't like her :p

I don't understand what you mean by an "incomprehensionable or trivial" plot, but I thought that they plot was really quite easy to follow...

The graphic was to keep it true to the comic-style, a lot of comics are as graphic as that.

The last negative point I agree with the most, but I didn't feel that way at all. Especially seeing as how one of the main characters ended up surviving... although I could see someone not understanding why they would sympathize with these characters.

I respect your opinion, I just thought I'd contradict you a bit ;)

There were some pacing problems in the marv story, and a few scenes were cut out that actually helped the plot. Alba wasnt really a good Nancy Calahan, she's hot and all but just didnt get the role down. Other than that it was pretty good

This is coming from a guy who read the comics.

How does the story work? I know from the comics that it's split into a number of different stories. Do they just jump between them randomly? Does it do one story then move onto the next?

Thanks for trying to explain why you like. It really helps me understand. It's just that for me, I didn't give a damn for any of the characters because they were all hopeless. I said Sin City has no plot because the movie is basically composed of three totally unrelated little subplots which are not very creative; something bad happens, and more bad things happen in an attempt to clean up the mess. If you go in to watch it and you just expect hot ass and guts, then I guess you might like it. But there really wasn't anything to draw you into the plot. I found the whole thing meaningless and just a constant bloodbath. Oh, and the whole evil pope thing really came in the wrong time - when that scene came on and he was shooting at the pope statue, I was like "I know you didn't go there."

He obviously just didn't get the movie. Sin City isn't a realistic crime story, it's a fantasy/crime movie comprised of 3 short stories from frank millers books.

Ebert liked it while pointing out the weakness of the plot.

I ussually go by Ebert he knows what he's talking about and is almost always right on target, so I'll definately go see it. plus B/W is awesome, my DVD collection is about 50% pre color.

That's the whole point. Thats what Frank Miller was trying to express in his comics (and now, movie). His characters are supposed to be hopeless. Now, unfortunately, your not a Sin City comic fan and you probably would've apperciated this more. There are plots, really good, original ones. Your just not paying attention because you think this is just some stupid action bloodbath. This movie is only going to appeal to certain people. I've seen the movie twice this weekend and the theater wasn't even packed. I could find a great seat easily. Sin City is more of a cult movie, its for a certain group of people. I'm feel sorry for you not enjoying it. Your really missing out.

Anyways, I can't wait till Rodriguez makes a sequel for the other comics. Hell and Back is my favorite Sin City comic and should be amazing to see on screen. Hell and Back would have to be its own movie though since the whole book would be about an hour and 45 minutes.

I think Sin City is like a new Pulp Fiction. Many people don't 'get it' and can't understand how it can be concidered a good movie. Likewise, the people who 'get it' can't understand how anyone could think it isn't an incredible movie. That's what cult classics are all about.

Just got back from the movie. Sweet :D I loved the whole style of the movie. I don't know about it being the next Pulp Fiction, but it definitely was good. Pulp Fiction appeals to a wider audience and was funnier if you ask me.

Also, with "The Hard Goodbye" (Story with marv), the pacing seemed off. Not saying it was too short, just that the transition wasnt good.

Kickass film! Reminded me a lot of Max Payne and some bits of Kill Bill. It was violent, bloody (though the blood was white for the most part), and very well put together. Nice storytelling and visual and creative style.

I have a question on the movie.

I don't get the ending. In the elevator where the girl went in with The Man. What was that all about?

Tid-bits...

Anyone else notice the floating turds in the toilet when Jackie Boy was dunked? :p

Were those Swastika stars that Miho threw into Jackie Boy's ass?

Its continuing the one shot comic from the beginning of the movie. Its based on one of Miller's short Sin City comics.

Yeah it was pretty funny

No, they're not swastikas. Before Nazi's made them infamous, it was a symbol that usually meant Peace...I think. Lots of asian and indian martial artists used it.

Hinting that Gail hired the hitman from the beginning to kill becky

It wasnt Jackie Boy, it was someone else Marv was dunking. Jackie Boy got dunked in his own piss, hence him throwing up yellow liquid a second later

Beats me

EDIT: Damn, someone beat me to it

No. When Jackie Boy (Benicio Del Toro) was dunked by that guy. Don't know his name. I forget. Remember? You know what I mean? There were two dunkings in the movie. You know, Shellie's apartment.

Yes, I know, it was piss that Jackie Boy was dunked in, in Shellie's apartment. Marv was dunking some unnamed thug into a toilet with 2 turds.

Yeah. I guess you're right. I forget anyway.

How about just not spoiling the movie for everyone... even though I've read all the comics.

Maybe you shouldn't read a thread called "Sin City" if you haven't seen a movie called "Sin City" yet?

Jackie-boy: "You're making a big mistake, man"

Dwight: "So did you. You didn't flush."

Anyone notice the heavy connections to shakespeares plays? Mainly hamlet? This heavily borrowed from his idea of the tragic hero. Great movie I loved it.

Hamlet as tragic hero = catharsis
Sin City "heroes" = apathy

Yeah, that is a good connection.

Check out me Profile Picture.

Thanks to Chris_D. ;)

finally saw it this week and it lived up to everything i thought it would be
when this comes out on DVD, i will definitely be getting it :)

Well DVD's seem to be coming out a lot quicker these days. I don't know if it because most of the movies sucked or what.

No, I think it's because there's way too many movies being released at one time...and theatres only have so much room to play movies.

So they end up having to push the not-so-good movies out the door, and unroll the welcome mat for the new ones.
:frog:
