Ritual Entertainment today has released yet another blog update at their SiN Episodes site. In today's entry is some new details on the games current status. According to the development team, the game "is barreling towards the finish line…" with Emergence - Episode 1. With that in mind, they also have acknowledged that Episode 2 is getting ready to see its first few lines of code. Plus, a bit of a comment on GDC and the future of gaming in general:
One of the really cool facets of our current zeitgeist (yes, that's actually a word, and man-oh- man, it's even pretentious to look at) games, computers, and technology are becoming more and more mainstream. As this occurs, we're seeing more and more interesting technology that's tangential to the game industry – things that are not directly game focused, but might have ramifications on how perceive and play games in the future.

[br]Also released is a video of some of SiN's characters being displayed on IO2technology‘s Heliodisplay, a Holographic Projector! Don't forget, this technology is still in its early stages, so don't expect to see one of these puppies on your desk anytime soon.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but I'm 99% sure that the Heliodisplay doesn't actually project in 3d. It projects 2d video onto a mid-air plane. The video on the blog, being 2d itself, doesn't really make this very clear, since the 2d video being projected is itself a projection of a 3d image.

Still very cool.

Yea its not like the holograms you'd see in typical sci-fi movies, but its definitely a step in the right direction. It'll be better once you don' see the lines moving through the image.

Yes, still cool as the destruction of Robocop.

The image is now floating in a Three-Dimensional space, instead of flat on a surface of a monitor. That's why it says "3D"

My head is going to implode trying to figure out how that works.

Bend lightwaves?

it sucks in air and does somthing to it and blows it back out and it illuminates, or something like that

And it spits out HUGE SIGS :p

This probably another fad, like those VR headsets in the early 90's or scent peripherals for games that were sprouting up a few years ago.

I dident really care much for sin because i never played the first one but after watching videos and looking at the features this game is on my to buy list right under HL2:ep1

ps that holographic shiz is awesome :p

I'd guess it works something along the lines of shooting out streams of air at varying speeds from a tiny set of apertures along the base of the image and then projects/shoots light into these streams to create colours or something.

Or maybe the light is hitting dust particles in the air, although that seems unlikely because it's much less controllable.

I remember reading about this in New Scientist. Something to do with precisely-tuned lasers and an electromagnetic draught of air.

yeah, it sounds like a fun toy to brake

when i saw it uses any video supplier i was disappointed. i mean you could do a 3d render, and play it as a video, but its not like you , well you could play a video game on it, but you can't walk around it.

i couldn't find any screens to the sin relationship, can someone hotlink?

If they had 360 odd projectors though, and some nouce, perhaps then they could make a fully 3d hologram :E

I think it would work much better if it was set up in a glass cabinet. Then you could have a proper, stable 3D projection and it would look awesome.

"lets see how many boob shots we can fit in 1:30"

Well that was lame. The "heliodisplay" has got nothing to do with 3D.

I think a basic flat TFT display is a much more impressive device.
