Sister of war hero auctions medals on eBay

Different strokes.

What?

Personally I'd be quite happy for my family to sell on any possessions they may inherit after my death as long as it goes to something they'd enjoy - like a holiday.

Perhaps, but the article never mentioned her being given explicit permission by her brother. Most people wouldn't, hence the reaction.

Also lol @ "cheap joy" as if she's spending it on gigalos or something. Also cruises aren't that brief.

I'm sure she'll have plenty of other things to remember him by, perhaps ones with more personal sentiment attached rather than GOVT ISSUE LUMP OF METAL

Perhaps a cruise is arguably worth it, but the way it's presented, it was an impulsive idea, no better than a photo shoot.

Oh. I thought we all agreed to pretend the articles they write don't exist?

Then we'd have one less fascist newspaper to bash.

Yeah, perfect reason to invade two countries and kill countless thousands more innocent civilians.

Pro tip: The vast majority of the deaths of the locals have been from suicide bombers from foreign countries. The US and British military rarely use that MOS...

Please tell me how either country is making money off these wars. And I swear to God if you say oil I will reach through the internet and skull**** you.

Pro tip: Stop using the term "pro tip" when 99% of what comes out of your mouth is bullshit.

I suppose you have a source for your claim that most people that died in Afghanistan have been from locals?

And you can't be serious if you think that money isn't involved. It's not that the country is making money (we are losing money). It's that the people that run the country are making a shit load of money. Wether that be halliburton, blackwater (or XE or whatever the hell they choose to call themselves), or all the other corporations brining in billions of dollars each year from military contracts.

wrong in both cases

[On Iraqi civilian deaths]31% (186,318) of those were attributed to the Coalition, 24% (144,246) to others, and 46% (276,472) unknown. The causes of violent deaths were gunshot (56% or 336,575), car bomb (13% or 78,133), other explosion/ordnance (14%), air strike (13% or 78,133), accident (2% or 12,020), and unknown (2%)

Pro tip: millions of more people died directly or indirectly due to the invasions, most of them civilians. Who caused what proportion during the wars isn't the issue, who start them is.

Ya know, the Democrats during the election were saying they would stop all this no-bid crap....yet, wow, Xe still gets hired. I know you guys don't like capitalism, but companies provide services the government needs, at a price the government is willing to pay.

46% "Unkown"

That sounds a whole lot like people being kidnapped in the middle of the night and having their heads cut off, or being found in mass graves to me...

it sounds like a lot of things. to attribute it to one single thing just shows how much you'd rather tow the partisan line than actually examine the facts. not surprising coming from you. you're still wrong

It sure doesnt sound like natural causes or getting shot by a Coalition soldier...

Yeah, the democrats suck almost as much as the republicans do. What's your point?

Yeah, the government is willing to pay prices that are absolutely absurd because they want to keep their corporate overlords happy. Today we found that that 8 billion dollars in Iraq just happened to disappear. So you didn't refute what I said, many people get insanely and unjustly rich off these wars. Therefore as Stern pointed out you are dead wrong. And your use of pro tip was absolutely comical.

Did... did we seriously just go there?

You know what, Ridge?:

Really? So your beloved relative dies and those who put him in harms way send a few pieces of scrap metal as if that can make up for it and you're expected to treasure them always?Nah, you'll sell that shit and have a holiday in his memory from the proceeds - keep the things from your childhood which mean infinitely more to you.

-- A perfectly valid way of looking at it.

I read about that earlier today. It's just insane how 8 Billion can just "disappear."

Personally, I'd hold on to them as signs of how well they did their job, and their dedication to their country and preserving it's freedoms.

Yes, I imagine you would.

Oh well GOD forbid I should support my family members in their endeavors...

Hell, your fellow countrymen were too busy knee-capping each other to freedom just a few decades ago...

God doesn't forbid shit cause he ain't real, but anyway just because one might support their endeavours doesn't mean you want to be reminded of them if they cause the death of said loved one.

Hell, your fellow countrymen were too busy burning crosses to freedom just a few decades ago... Haw haw haw

Yes, I imagine you would.

That's hardly fair.

Like the medals would mean anything to me. It's the fact that they'd mean something to my brother, the person who they were given to.

Would they? Would they mean more to your brother than the unhappiness such a reminder would cause you vs the much-needed respite of a holiday?

(hint: if the answer is yes the brother is potentially at least as much a selfish dick as some are accusing this woman of being)

Does it matter. He no longer gets a say. And to assume either way is selfish in itself.

To take the measly scraps of metal, the last reminder of what he died for which he earned and to blow it all on a holiday entirely for yourself.

But yeah, it seems not much difference from any other inheritance. Except passing a house on is generally well planned and thought out. There's a difference between the two, but I can't articulate it at the moment. Perhaps tomorrow.

Man, the way people are going on about these medals, I keep expecting Westboro Baptist to bust in and picket us for false idolatry.
