Sisters serving two life sentences can go free if one gives the other a kidney.

Stupid reason to let them go free.

Giving a kidney to another criminal... a family member no less, is supposed to show compassion or some shit? Let them serve their sentences in full, kidney or not.

Only four states in the whole country give life sentences for armed robbery. These sisters aren't very lucky, it seems.

You have to love this country. The fact these sentances were excessive never really mattered, but as soon as it starts costing the state a shit load of money to keep one of them in prison suddenly the governor gets involved.

Yeah, I was waiting for the part where they killed somebody.

It's probably worth mentioning that they are black and this is Mississippi we're talking about.

Damn man... it was their first offense too. I don't think that trial was really a fair trial. I don't know how the laws work in Mississippi, but elsewhere, if you commit a robbery where no one is hurt and little is taken and it's your first offense, you usually don't get life in prison. That's just... insane. If that was me I would have appealed the shit out of it. I think the first offense part is the most disturbing part. I mean shit like that and less gets life sentences for repeat offenders, but certainly not first offenders.

It was probably because they used a shotgun, which makes it an Armed Robbery, which carries a heavier punishment.

That trial was bullshit. Their story circulated on reddit recently. Apparently they basically got ****ed over by the prosecution - iirc the prosecutors made a deal with one of the kids that actually did the robbery where that kid testified that they used the sisters to "bait" people. The girls didn't do any physical mugging themselves and always maintained they weren't involved. Even so, $11 isn't a reason to go to jail for 30 years.

The justice system often doesn't worry about what exactly was stolen- but simply the act of stealing and giving possible immediate harm to an innocent person. Just because someone who aimed a gun at your head only got your pocket change shouldn't mean they should be let off easy.

Except neither of these girls were armed. The guys they were "with" were armed and performed the actual robbery. In any case making a stupid decision when you're 17 that doesn't result in anyone being hurt shouldn't condemn you to hellish prisons for the rest of your life.

I'm going to agree with Acepilot about the monetary value. Not saying anything about this specific case, but if someone hit me in the head for $11, that's pretty bad. Because I would've given them all my money even if they just used verbal threats and mildly aggressive behavior (e.g. waved the gun around). There's no need to actually hit the person you're robbing. Armed robbery for $11 should be punished the same as armed robbery for $100. But life in prison is excessive for either.

I'd say if you're willingly going along with something done for personal gain that involves anyone being harmed, that negates the whole 'you're allowed to **** up when you're 17' thing.

Yeah no my state is testicles and rotten meat curtains.

Oh wait... when I first read this, I didn't realize that they were serving life.

Life for armed robbery without killing anybody? What the ****?

And a gym teacher over here in Sweden who repeatedly over a four year old period rapes one of his female students(She was 9 when the rapes started, 13 when she finally told parents) gets sentenced to two years.

Maybe we should exchange judges with Mississippi for a bit, so we could become a bit harsher and they could become a bit nicer.

I'm all for countering the pedo-witchhunt mindset of most people, but that's just not right.
