I cannot get my skybox's to work AT ALL! I have tried every tutorial and i always end up with a big pink box around my map with no sky texture...nothing works.....can someone either give me a very elaborate tut for skies or walk me through it on AIM or MSN or something? i'm so pissed off....

that is such a beginner unfriendly tutorial...i found a few good ones off of planethalflife forums and hlfallout....try takin a look there.....

A beginner shouldn't be worrying about 3dskyboxes and should be learning the other beginner parts, then would understand 3dskyboxes.

But he is a beginner and wants to make one....im a beginner and so far made a map (not a good one) and want to add some scenery...The best way for me anyways is to get walked through the basics then i can mess around with it and figure it out....the VERC kinda assumes you know more than the average beginner should know.....but ya, you should know how to do the other stuff also....

If you are making a room and not a big map you can just add the sky texture to the ceiling (textures-browse-sky...) and add the sky entity to it....(click on the entity button and find the sky one)...Theres another way but since im kinda new, Im not too sure....Ill find some good sites for skyboxes and get back to ya....

I think the term 3d skybox can be misleading.. it just means to make objects that appear to be on the outskirts(or in the sky) but aren't actually part of the playable map.. it's a bit advanced..

as for just making a sky, make a large cube around your whole map, hollow it out, apply the texture "skybox" to it.. and then in under Map>properties, enter a sky texture name.. like sky_day01_07

i'm hoping you know some of the other basics like putting in a 'light_environment' entity.. hope this helps move things along :imu:

yes i do know how to do that with the light_environment thanks alot for the advice....i'll try it out

About the 3D Skybox having parts on/in it!? I did not know this...maybe that's why I kept ****ing it up...i'll stick to surrounding my environment with a big skybox then...THANKS!!

what you do is...

you open the sample skybox map that comes with the SDK, and then:

1) You use that map and modify it to your needs

2) Examine how it works so you can make your own

make a cube around your map

hollow it out

assing toolsskybox to it

tools>map properties>skyname give it a sky name

and If you want something like "3d"

Put that camera entity in the 0,0,0 poitn of your map.

copy some ref brushes(the oter ones of your map)(remember to alsoselect the cam entity)

Paste it and right click on it and tranform

Press the scale dot

assign .0625 to all the 3 values. Press OK

Move the scaled down stuff out of the way and make a hollow sky brush around the tiny map

now use the ref bruses to make your 3d stuff around.. remember to keep it small.

remove the ref brushes

add or copy the light_env entity into the time map

remove the cam entity from the original entity

COMPILE!
