I did do a quick search for this but didnt find anything.

Well, basicly i have only just got the SDK and i want to try and get some of my models into the game, i have decompiled a cople of the origanals and got me a group of SMD's, i dont really know what to do with them now. Um, what will i have to do to get them opened up in max?

You'll need an importer for Max.
http://www.chaosincarnate.net/cannonfodder/cftools.php

And of course if you want to compile your modified model you'll need the exporter (wich you can find at the same URL).

You can also download the Model Toolkit that some0ne made (it's on these forums). This will make the compile process easier instead of having to use the command line, DOS window.

Ok, i downloaded the importer, what do i do with the files that are in the zip and once i have opened max how do i use the importer to open a model.

Im sure this is really simple but never done it befor and i have no idea whats going on :(

Also how would i go about opening one of the SMD's in XSI, i thought it would be a straght foward import. I was planning on importing it to XSI and then exporting it to a max file.

I'm not sure to understand what you want to do... You want to make changes to the model in max or in xsi? If you model in 3dsMax you don't need XSI, import the model, make some modifications, export.

Oh and to export a model... File/Export...
I won't tell you how to import... lol, take a guess...

Basicly i origanly thought that to get a model into 3d max it would have to go thought XSI first. But this clearly isnt the case.

I downloaded the importer that you gave me the link to earler on in the post but i do not know what to do with the files within the zip files, what dir do i put these files in? Im guessing once they are in the right place i just go to Import and there will be .SMD in the file type list.
Again im guessing that once i edit my model and want to export it there will be .SMD in the export file type list.

But on a side note, if i did want to open one of the .SMD files into XSI how would i go about that. Because at the moment i would quite like to start learning the program and if i can get some models open in it i can have a look at them and well, try and figger out whats going on.

read the tutorials over on hl2world to learn how to do all this stuff.
you are obviously evading my question for some strange reason but to get your own models ingame you dont need the originals.

But the origanals give me a frame work to work on, which i think will help as i have never done it befor.

Ok, well since you don't know where to put the plugin files I guess you are new to 3dsmax. Maybe you could read a few docs on basic modeling in max and stuff like that. Anyway, the plugins files goes into the ... guess what, plugins folder :)

We are always pleased to help people on the forums but I think you can google alot of things before asking it here. When your questions will be more specific to HL2 Modding, come back and post that question here.

Not really, but i dont know how to open SMD's, i put the plugin in the plugin folder, go to import and there is no option to select and import SMD files. How do i import SMD files :/

wat version of max do you have and which importar are you using? make sure you're using the importer for your version of max.
then put the files in "your max directory\plugins"
