Here's a thread to tell all of us your experiences with any mmorpgs you may have played.

The only one I have played is Star Wars Galaxies, and to be honest, purchasing that game was one of the biggest mistakes I've ever made gaming-wise. It had a horrid first couple of days but that's almost understandable I guess. But my main problem was with the actual game, it was as buggy as you would expect an early beta to be, and when I actually made it 20 minutes without a crash and got to play it, it was just plain boring. Not having vehicles in the initial version made it even worse, it could literally take 30 minutes to get to the next closest town if you were doing a mission.

I am thinking of trying another one out, but this time I wanna go with one that's actually good. I've heard good things about World of Warcraft but I am undecided. So, which mmorpgs have you guys played and how would you say the experience was?

Nope, never. But I will try Guild Wars during E3.

I've never played one... Hell, I've never even actually seen one...

I do plan to begin by playing the Guildwars beta once E3 starts, though. :)

Edit: Hah... nice, ElFuhrer! :p

Heh cool looks like we'll all be playing Guild Wars come E3. If you come across Soundwave(or Soundwave239 if I can't get plain old Soundwave) that's me.

My brother bought planetside + the expansion pack, and he plays it all the time.

I was underwhelmed when I tried it though. It's fun, but it would be better if it were MMO without the RPG. The leveling up and gaining experience kinda wrecked it. Like all MMORPGs, it only gets fun after playing it for a few days. Then, you can use the planes. The planes make it badass.

So far, WoW looks best to me, but I know nothing of it beyond a few screens and good hype from beta testers.

tried planetside, i wasnt impressed.

tried lineage 2, i didnt get to play much before the beta ended :(

tried city of heros, it was fun, my super hero rocked, i wish i could have played longer before the beta ended.

currently playing world of warcraft, its fricken awesome! heh, ive never really been an rpg fan but im really into WoW, its great fun grouping with people and completing quests.

I’m currently playing EVE: Online, and its a very fun MMO game. You can do lots of things like: Work with an Agent that gives you different missions, like hunting down other NPC characters. Just beware that some of the missions can be very hard.
You can also buy something cheap in a station and then find good stations were you can sell it expensive (its called trading in other words).
Mine asteroids is a option too, can get boring after a while but you can make big money of mining rare asteroids like Jaspet or Hermophite.
If you are in a corporation, you could always mine with other people from the corp. That’s the best way to mine in a low security system, otherwise it could get frustrating with all the rats that you encounter sometimes (some of them are really hard to destroy, if you dont have heavy drones protecting your ass though :)).

Well, not only that you can do a lot of things, the game is very beautiful too. And has very good music. You have also a jukebox in the game so you can change music anytime while you are playing.

The game also has something like 137 skill books that you can buy from the market. But new skill books gets added time to time, so you cant never really stop levelling your character.

I have played, Everquest, Anarchy Online, Dark Age of Camelot, Planetside, Shadowbane, Neocron, and other random ones I can't remember. I am addicted to MMORPGs I think they are one of the best genres and I have no problem with paying a monthly fee.

Ultima Online: I played off and on for about 5 years (mostly on the first 3-4 when it was cool, and before they neutered everyone)

Everquest: my (of all people) Teacher in High school recommended this to me, she kept asking me about Ultima (which I was playing at the time) and she came from Meridian 59, I tried to get here to move to UO, and she kept insisting I try her damn Everquest. So eventualy I gave it a try... played a couple months... hated it.

Asheron's Call: was fun for a while, but couldnt best UO.. so I left and continued UO.

Asheron's Call 2: man turbine screwed that one up BAD, it had awesome graphics (the new face off MMORPGS at the time) but it just wasnt enjoyable, played about 8 months... got uber boring.

Lineage 2: was in the Beta, hated every second of it.. Im not even gonna bother talking about how crappy it was (and I was looking forward to it :/ )

I used to enjoy MMORPGs.... but theres nothing good out there.

World Of Warcraft is too cartoony for my tastes... even if the game kicked super major ass... I couldnt play it... its just too crappy gfx-wise (imo).

Ultime X: Odyssey : same as above, maybe a little worse... actually much worse.
us Ultima fans (not just UO, been playing UO since about Ultima 2-3) this was a HUGE slap in the face... Ultima has always been "realistic-ish" and when "Ultima: Origin Worlds Online" (or whatever they changed the name of UO2 to) was cancelled, us UO fans cried.
bah the whole premise of "UX: O" sucks. if Richard Garriott were dead, he would roll in his grave.... Since he is alive Im guessing he is just cursing the morons at EA.

and about everything else looks to be shite... Saga Of Ryzom, LOTR, Everquest2 (the most promising, only because it looks to be in a field of mediocre titles) Wish, Warhammer: Online, etc etc

all looks crap. :(

Im hoping at this E3, something cool and new is going to be shown.
Im placing my faith in good ol Richard "Lord British" Garriott, and cant wait to see his upcoming MMORPG called "Tabula Rasa" ("clean slate" translated from latin)
unfortunately its said to have sci-fi influence mixed with traditional medieval (I dont quite like Sci-fi in MMORPGS.. ick... Anarchy online)

but hey, its Richard so... it has to be something good.

I played Neocron for about a year, and enjoyed it immensely. Would certainly recommend it to anyone for a solid MMORPG.

Also played Anarchy Online for a few weeks, but it didn't really appeal to me, so I quit.

Played Planetside beta, liked it, but the game had absolutely no purpose. When you just had a cool battle for a base with like 60 men, the next day, or even in a few hourse, the base was reconquered again. Repetition, repetition... :(

I played Ultima Online for 3 years, had a Dread Lord Tamer. Ultima Online brought me into a close community of friends that I never thought possible with an Online Game. Met so many great people and made lots of close friends, many I still keep in touch with up to this day.

Just a crying shame about what they did to a fantastic Online Game.

I played the planetside free trial...

Got pretty good actually, and addicted. But to be honest that game is lacking.

What I really want is something like planetside but for WW2 or purhaps modern day.

I know it seems obvious and people will say that it will be like any other game. But I reckon say a WW2 MMORPG would be awsome. I mean as people progresed through the ranks you could command more troups bellow you. Purhaps at the start choose whether you want to go army, airforce or navy.

You could progress through each role. Army going up through the ranks, purhaps the option of special forces equipment once you have got so much combat experience. In the airforce you might have to start as a gunner or somthing in the aircraft and after a short while become a pilot. First a bomber pilot and then progress to fighter. And eventually special planes such as the first jet fighers the Germans had at the very end of the war.
Navy, maybe get command over larger and larger ships and guns, subs etc.

Then of course you could integrate the three roles for combat with things such as paratroopers from the army being droped off by the airforce and being helped by a naval bombardment.

Ahem!......

WHY DONT THEY MAKE THIS GAME!!!

I would pay monthly if they did it right.

I think they do have one, it's called WW2 Online. I don't know if it's any good or not but it's somewhat similar to what you just described.

Yeah I had a look at that... I dunno about it though...

I'll have another look

I've heard good things about EVE & Neocron, but I'm not paying. end of story.

Matrix Online could be the 1st game to get me, but I still doubt it.

I remember why I didnt like the look of WW2 Online. The annimations are appalling. As are the character models.
I appreciate them having to cut down because of the masive amounts of poeple on screen at once. But thats no real excuse for what they have there.....

Plus it doesnt have what I want I dont think. Which is what I described before. Everything integrated and roles to play as individuals AND as a team.

I've played quite a few -

Everquest - Eh..played it for a few months..got pretty bored of it
Asheron's Call - Liked it the patronage system in the game..but lacking in community
Asheron's Call 2 - Played some beta/trial thing...didn't like it
Dark Age of Camelot - Had fun with it...but couldn't continue because I couldn't pay the fees anymore - never really had ambition to try it again
Anarchy Online - Just tried it at a friend's house...seemed weird
Neocron - Didn't like the beta
Planetside - Played the free trial beta thingy..thought it was ok..but not good enough in my opinion to buy and pay for.
Shadowbane - Played for a few months - had fun - got rich, but my friends stopped playing and the guild I was in was attacked and destroyed. It was so much fun stealing from people though :)

I wanna check out WoW sometime...and I'd love to try out Matrix Online...I doubt I'll get into any MMORPG for a long time.

ive played planetside- its not really an RPG, but its certainly a MMOG. I gave it back tho as i dint want to fork out money each month- which is exactly the same reason why its the only MMORPG i have ever played and probally ever will play. bloody great game tho.

played Ultima Online back in the day. got phased out by Everquest but never got interested in that, the graphics were too shiny :p

Planetside isn't really an MMORPG, more an MMOFPS. load of crap if you ask me. great idea but really really laggy and full of bugs. only one european server when i quit, probably still is.

Neocron was probably the nearest i got to the feeling of UO. some decent players, great back story and setting. just started to get a little stale.

i'm only just starting to get into EVE Online. it's similar to Elite. gorgeus graphics too and a great community. wish i had more time to play it though. very rewarding, best MMORPG out there at the moment.

I betatested and GM'd in Neocron for about 2 years (as Moonunit.....for those who care), but ultimately my enthusiasm for the project waned after a while (GMing is hard work) so I retired early last year (although I still follow the games development). Since then I've participated in a few other MMPORPG beta's, however none have really gripped or impressed me so far. Despite it's graphical simplicity compared to some of the latest offerings Neocron has more of a dynamism than most other MMPORPG games in the market place, because the combat is realtime as opposed to turn based (Planetside is more MMPOFPS than RPG).

Certainly the game isn't perfect (no game ever is) and even now a year after release the developers are still ironing out bugs and resolving balancing issues, but I'd heartily recommend it if nothing more than for the experience (it has a flawed beauty). I believe that Fileplanet still host a 10 day trial for it (although whether this is still active.....I'm not sure)

Sprafa: It's not uncommon for regular players to easily clock up 100 to 150+ hours playing time in a month, you balance that against a monthly cost of $10 to $20 and you'll find that mmporpgs are a relatively cheap form of entertainment.

played DAOC for awhile, liked it a lot but it got boring.

beta tested earth and beyond.. i liked that but never bought it because i liked some other stuff more at the time

I played two-

Planetside- Good game. Played beta and p2p for 3 months. Fun for the 1st 2 months then the game had no point. Repetive with no real goal in mind.

Lineage 2- Played Beta. Fun game but the Economy sucks. 300k more for a weapon that only does 10+ damage? Plus the leveling in the game takes too long. Fun game for about 2 weeks.

WoW- Doesn't look so amazing but I could be wrong.

EQ2- Looks ok, hopefully not as addictive as the first

Guild wars- IMO, best in the MMO field. They don't charge a monthly fee at all but will be releasing expansions on a regular basis they said. That's how they get paid to keep it going. Pure genius.

played planetside beta/30 day free trial... it is amazing! if i could only afford the monthly fees.. i'd probably be playing rite now

I have played FFXI, Lineage II, and now am subscribed to City of Heroes, ITS AWESOME. IF you have ever been a super hero/comic book fan, you will LOVE this game.

And if you do happen to get it, go on Infinity server :)

From my experience the MMORPGs only last me the free month that comes with em.

Guild wars- IMO, best in the MMO field. They don't charge a monthly fee at all but will be releasing expansions on a regular basis they said. That's how they get paid to keep it going. Pure genius.

But you gotta ask, are the expansions required to play? If so its no better than paying monthly to play, it may even cost more.

I have my Guild Wars E3 account set up and I'm ready to go....but it's not May 12th yet...bah!

I can't belive you don't think Everquest 2 looks good. I think it is one of the best games coming out all year, I am more excited for it then Half-Life 2 right now. They just put soooo much into EQ2 and there and so many great ideas.

Massively Multiplayer games beyond a wicked experiance in my opinion. Its just a pitty no one has ever managed to truly grasp the enviroment very well. What I mean is that all the massivly multiplayer games I have played have massive flaws that make them boring and tedious. Its a pitty no one has ever made a realy really adictive one. Kinda like Counter-Strike.

I was in the beta for Necron...that was pretty fun. At leastthe time i got to play it anyway.

I was in The Sims beta. I quite enjoyed that but it was too time consuming and the fact it looked identical to the original sims put a dampner on it. If it had been in the Sims 2 engine, then it would have been more enjoyable. Also, being able to go into first person mode would have been fun...actually being able to walk around and experience what you have built.

I've played other things but i cant remember them right now.

I beta tested Planetside, but thats really about it, never bought any mmo's

Tried Ragnarok Online. Played for a bit, was hooked!!

Got bored in a week.

PAY to PLAY I think is dumb and only extreme fanboys. If MMORPG's were not PAY to PLAY I would play them, but because it costs a monthly fee, I don't agree with that.

i dont think so, they have some other system in place. like people with the update can go on certain quests or whatever and others cannot. but i think you can stream content to your friends so i dont know.

and no i dont think it would cost more. the expansions MUST not cost like an extra 50 dollars. even if they did, releasing an expansion every 6 months (as they claim) would be even cheaper.

i....uh, heh, played..... runescape?

don't kill me please!
