That the door kicking and other such "unscripted" events are actuslly scripted and we have all been lied to or are folks just over reacting yet again from basing thoughts on a very old version of this game.

Has anyone tried emailing Gabe on this one? I'd try, but they haven't responded to my other 8 emails I sent. I know its a busy time for them, but don't we have a right to know this atleast? I highly doubt that Valve would flat out lie about this feature of the game to the fans and press, so an email might give Valve a chance to clear up the confusion.

Thanks guys have a good one.

Ok, Its an "Alpha" version of HL2 :p

I cant believe that you STILL believe the "great" physic innovation from HL2 faked e3 vid.

Hell! Its the same when Unreal 2 pictures were published which are photoshoped with extra shadow and bright sharp colors. Its a lie to create such pictures and videos and claim it as the ingame shots when they arent.

We got our asses flammed from Ubi when we pre-rendered some nice ingame actions in Ravenshield to show the ppl "how" it might look. They decide to show only real ingame actions except the char animations from 3dmax.

During the E3 vid presentation there were no words like "this isnt real ingame" or "it might look like that". They said nothing with let us believe the game is REAL LIKE THAT.

The hardcore fanboys will never accept that it is scripted, so dont bother trying.

and some people will never accept that most of us just don't care

If it's scripted or unscripted, does it stop it being fun? No.

It *is* scripted in places, but only so that there is an actual story. For the fights the AI is somewhat more complex, mr Doubting Thomas. The E3 demo has scripted bits because it would take longer than the length of time available for a demo to fully showcase the AI (if it were allowed to happen randomly, as it would be in-game).

I don't know if you will ever accept that it's *not* entirely scripted.

Seeya.

This peculiar chap speaketh the seneseth. Do I care if it's scripted? No not so much, first time through it'll be dreamy anyway and I don't tend to play SP games more than once unless they're exceptionally amazing.

As long as the AI thinks to dodge and maybe take cover I'll be happy with it.

The final game WILL have ****ing scripted events. Maybe Gordon needs to be "forced" through that door for gameplay reasons...judging from the E3 fotage, Id say thats a likely scenario. Valve said from the begining the game would have scripted events. ya know why? Cuz you cant tell a story by AI and physics alone....I dont care how incredible they are.

Also, considering the demo is a demo one can probably safely conclude everything in it is for ...you guessed it... ademonstration!!!

Btw, are you ****ing retarded? Do you really thing anyone at Valve is going to answer questions about an illegal, anauthorized LEAked demo of the game? Let me state once again...
VALVE DOES NOT OFFER TECH SUPPORT TO FVKING RETARDED THEIVES!!!!

Hmm, guys. Anyone asked himself what the purpose of this leaked playable demo might have been?!

As i see it, everything in it has only 1 purpose, recording demo's and show content to people.

So i think they put everything in scene, scripted and sollid, so they would be 100% sure of what the AI would do during presentations.

I don't think u can use random AI during important presentations like E3. They just want a hollywood looking demo out there. So they scripted prolly everything.

See I have a problem with this. If I were to be "demoing" (that a word) the game I would have had two or three movies showing the different things the NONSCRIPTED AI works using the same scenerio. I do not see why Valve could not have said here is Gabe playing the game and he does this and see what happens, now when he does it again this time see this the Combine does this. TAADAA. To say that the AI is unscripted and then show obvious scripted portions is kind of crappy.

indyjones: Dont make it look like it is a fact. Allot of the resources were not compiled in to the beta (pre-gold version). So maybe the AI cant doesnt work the way it should...

Dont call Valve liars based on an illegal and incomplete beta, that hasnt even been compiled properly to.

OH NO!!! the door was scripted!!! OMG OMG OMG!!!! it ruin the ENTIRE game!!! i'm going to kill myself!!! it's impossible!! no!!! not the DOOR!!! it was the ONLY cool thing in the game!!!

(bwahahah :p )

OK let me break it down for you guys.

I have no problem with an e3 demo being scripted for dramatic effect.

I do have a problem if the events that are scripted can't happen on there own.

So unless you can prove to me (which you can't) that the engine/AI can't do the things that were scripted go get bent.

We will talk about this when the game comes out.

P.S. is the guy that started this thread a troll it seems to be the same thing posted by Not_a_Fan not to long ago.

U have a point there. I recall an interview where HL2 dev said the reason that all HL1 action/scripts was seen behind a glass window was to avoid players interupting the scripted sequences. And that they wanted to avoid using this technique in the followup HL2.

Question stays ofcourse, did they just scripted it as a quick hack sollution for making demo's or isen't the AI capable

Don't you mean "*can* do the things that were scripted"?

*begins yelling* THE STUFF YOU SEE HAPPENING IN THE E3 VIDEO IS SCRIPTED YES! WHY? BECAUSE IT IS THE E3 VIDEO! THEY CAPTURED ALL OF THE MOST AMAZING THINGS THAT CAN HAPPEN IN THAT MAP AND SCRIPTED THEM ALL TO HAPPEN IN ONE PLAY THROUGH. IT WOULD BE HARD TO GET THE MAP TO PLAY OUT LIKE IT DID IF HE JUST WALKED THROUGH. THEY SIMPLY WANTED TO SHOW YOU HOW AMAZING THE ENGINE CAN BE. IT WAS JUST FOR E3. THE REAL GAME WILL NOT BE SCRIPTED. GET IT? *stops yelling*

no,

If you can not prove that the engine can not do what was done on its own then Valve did not defraud us at all. They just guaranteed the game was presented in the best possible light.

I have no issue with that at all.

And the same can be said to you. Why cant some of you have intelligent conversations? Instead of "cursing" and telling people to get bent. People like you and some others make me get real petty and wish HL2 fails just to throw it in your face. Then I grow up and wipe that thought from my mind. I do not want to see HL2 fail.

So can you prove otherwise? That the DEMO movie that supposedly SHOWED non scripted AI was non scripted? Why show something that is "incomplete" that may come and bite you in the arse later?

You are loosing credibility when you do stuff like that.

As for proof, with what people have, they have proven it. That is the reasons people are bringing this up.

prove us why it cant be? atleast give Valve the benefit of the doubt on this, they made lots of ppl happy for over 5 years

Oh. Right. Misunderstood you, dude.:E

VALVe just wanted to show an ideal version of the end result of their game. Reasonable enough, and achievable.

WHY NOT CAPTURE IT TWICE SHOWING THE AI IS NOT SCRIPTED MAKING THEIR POINT THAT MUCH STRONGER?

Look people I too want HL2 to be the best. But to put blinders on your eyes is not the answer. Think outside the box. It is ok to question. It helps obtain knowledge. It is ok to be wrong. yadda yadda yadda.

I am giving them the benefit of the doubt, I am assuming they scripted only what the engine can do, if thats the case all they were doing was putting on the best presentation they can.

The only way we will know if this is true or not is when we have the actual game, not this pos beta all these idiots are downloading.

So until we get the real game this is a moot point.

You chose to quote that single line to make that statement?

My opinion doesnt even play into that statement...Valve is not answering questions about the leaked content...

Speaking of opinions, do you have one of your own? No...? Just mindless spammage...Ok, enjoy.

Dude, what your doing is not "thinking outside the box"...

you have a very narrow mindset regarding the whole matter...take your own advice and question your own veiws as well.

Also, thye did capture it twice for e3...the gheyspy, and gamespot versions are slightly different iirc...but it doesnt matter. It was a DEMO. There was a set route he had to follow to DEMONSTRATE what needed to be shown...thats all demos are meant to do.

Why show you anything at all? They should've said nothing, ever, and let you be amazed after you bought the game, which you would have done, and will still do.

Let me lay it out again.

People are upset because the E3 video is scripted, why?

Because the scripting implies that Valve is somehow misleading/lying to the fans.

But no one can prove that what they scripted wasn't events that actually can and were performed by the engine and AI.

So the only thing Valve is guilty of (at this point) is presenting their product in the best possible light at a trade show. Which is what everybody does.

There is only an issue if the actions that were scripted can not be performed by the engine/AI. Since no one here has a fully properly compiled up to date build of the engine, and since the E3 video is intended to be a representation of the fully released working retail version of the product we cannot prove they did anything wrong.

We will not be able to prove they were or were not misleading until the fully approved released version of the game is available and we see what the engine/AI is capable of.

This means that discussion of this is completely ****ing pointless.

Agree totally! And furthermore I would like to say that, there ARE great fysics working in even this pre-beta version of HL2, and it's even more fantastic than anything else I've ever seen game-wise. Valve have done an eccellent job and I have the utmost confidence in them doing a great game. Could not help taking a look at the leaked game, but I would never help spread it, and it is deleted now...

I agree.
But then again, you have to understand that by showing the video, they probably just sold more copies to unfamiliar gamers.

Marketing...

WTF?!? Twix is like a alpha to snickers. They never intended that bar to be in there, they said it would be really big, but instead they split it into two pieces and man it sucks.

Ok, I think I must be tired. I'm babbling.

OK. If Valve tells you the sky is red and they show you a picture that the sky is red you accept it. If Valve tells you the sequence is scripted and it APPEARS not to be you still believe them. I dont care if it was a Demo or not. I go by what people tell me. If they are proven incorrect (which it appears) they loose credibility. I start to question if the "product" is as good as they want us to believe. How am I to believe something on blind faith? ESPECIALLY when it has been proven otherwise? If thats the case I have a bridge in New York to sell you. Well its not totally mine yet BUT in a few years it will be. Hopefully. If everything works out right.

"Why show you anything at all? They should've said nothing, ever, and let you be amazed after you bought the game, which you would have done, and will still do."
Fine. But why say one thing (misleading the "fans") and do something else. Also never have I said I wont buy the game. If this game "appeared" on the shelf with no hoopla or promotion, created by the same team I would have faith from past expierence that they can produce a quality game.

"Also, thye did capture it twice for e3...the gheyspy, and gamespot versions are slightly different"
So there are 2 or more different videos showing the Combine knocking at the door or taking different action? If so I am man enough to eat crow please direct me to those videos.

"You chose to quote that single line to make that statement?"
No I like to think we are a little "human" here and can break the monotony of everyone yelling at each other. Spammage. pfffft.

"We will not be able to prove they were or were not misleading until the fully approved released version"
errr not really. If they show you a video and say here is AI unscripted and its scripted they were misleading us. A lie is a lie if you will. To say something and not be able to fully stand behind it is wrong. Now if they wouldhave said this is what we are working on, or when it is finished it will do this is another thing. They were "caught" like the Wizard in the Wizard of Oz.

Please direct me to the thread/post/quote of a Valve employee stating that the E3 demo was unscripted?
