was VALVE planning on using the hl1's engine on hl2 when they'd just released hl1?

That all depends on whether they intended to make a sequel i suppose.
Also, the hl1 engine seems to have been the longest lasting engine ever, and hl2's engine wont last as long.

Yes it will use the source engine, HL3 will use it to its full extent. There were many features left out of HL2 simply because a lot of people wouldent be able to run them on some lower end and mid class machines. What the engine is capable off just as a teaser is a system that makes and generates models and textures from photographs (various 3d scans will probably be in it for the apropriate time but it does work stand alone). The result of this is near Photo-realistic textures and models, even more deitailed than the ones that you will see in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion.
Lets just hope that Valve doesn't pull another f-ck up like what steam did to the people who bought there game retail.

PS: that isn't uncommon knowledge jesus christ people, am I the only one to read PC gamer.

And for your information the HL1 engine is the Quake engine jesus christ man, it died soon after half-life also, 3 years isnt that long.

And yes there will be as sequil for any newb who asks, HOW THE F_CK COULD THEY HAVE AN ENDING LIKE THAT WITH OUT A SEQUIL. PCG said that it should come out sometime in mid or late 2006 since the engine is allready built and that was what took them so long with hl2, which in itself only took 3 years to make including the delays.
