So how do I play Half Life and OP4 singleplayer when the hurricane knocks cable out?

Knocks cable out? That's pathetic. It'll knock down the POWER first.

Don't be so sure... as crappy as my neighborhood power is, I've seen quite a few times this summer where the cable was out but the power was fine. So it's not a far-fetched idea.

Plus, we've had a couple of long power outages around here, if they've replaced equipment, I am pretty sure that most of the kinks in the system aren't as vulnerable, and we might stay up during the storm (I'm on waterfront Chesapeake in MD ... I don't want to watch my boat float away *whine*)

My cable WILL go out hours before the power, hell, the power might stay on.

So I can't play Half Life sp without connecting to steam?

Man , I hope that they offer a stand-alone STEAM server that we can run locally. I mean they really could do that.

You get your steam id, eveything is setup, they have a little server we could download just so we can play single-player when the internet is down. They could do that, but I don't know if they will.

You can play single-player without internet connection, period. Common sense, no need to worry. Everything different that you read out of Gabes statements is a misunderstanding.

You will need the internet connection for any offline games on Steam for the next few weeks. But there's nothingto stop you from getting out your CD and reinstalling from there back into your Sierra folder. The Steam installation will remain in tact, and you can play offline.

You will have to wait until (at least) the next version of Steam to come before you can play offline

Or just reinstall from the CD.

You guys don't understand the changes their going to do anyway. Quit your bitching about it and read the news.
