To everyone who played cs:s: how does the new Source netcode feels? Is it improved alot to the old HL1 netcode?

well people have only played on LANs so far, so we wont truly know until we test it out on the big old internet :)

kingthebadger would know! He can play online from his home anytime he wants.

I played in an online server for about 5 minutes with one other person, so I'm not the best person to comment, but it seemed okay. The rest of the time I was on a LAN.

What are you talking about? I only played on the internet.

only for one hour thu =P

I can't really judge, at first I thought the netcode was bad because there was a lot of lag.

But then I switched servers and the second server wasn't so laggy. So can't tell until I play on many different servers.

With the physics enabled it's about the same, a little more bandwith intensive by a few 0.1 kb.

With physics disabled, it's better than CS1.6

The resulting bandwidth per client is:
GoldSrc : 2.72 kB/sec
Source : 2.85 kB/sec
This is pretty good since we added quite a few physics entities in de_dust. I made an extra testrun where I disabled physics in Source and got 2.48 kB/sec. It's tried to measure spikes somehow and compared packet size distribution. Source engine packets are a little bit bigger, but large packets are rare (about 7% for packets > 256 bytes).

1: did you notice the ":p"
2: he can still play it! we can only watch :(

and yes, using a cyber cafe account at home to play a game less than a week away is very honorable :dozey:

It depends whether they were using the Dedicated Server or not, and also the situation the system was in, Some people seem to have had a lag free experience, a couple said certain servers were laggy, we wont know untill theres a wider test, but valves tests suggested it would be on par with HL1's netcode, which is pretty decent.

Net code is ok, aparently there was an issue with bodies falling in different places on different machines (even on lan) but objects are fine, and the pings are similar to HL/CS.
