So I finally found System Shock 2

I've been meaning to play this.

I don't know, heard it's a dandy.
I know Thief uses the same engine also. A game also worth mention.

the polygon count is realy low but the sound is what makes this game awesome

Holy Christ, if you've got an open mind, be prepared for one of the greatest games ever.

During it's time, it was a very scary game. Make sure no one is in the house, turn your lights off and turn the sound up. I heard stories of girlfriends ordering their boyfriends to play the game using headphones as the sounds used to freak them out...But such are urban myths.

It's a FPS mixed with an RPG. Most of the features in the game were copied in Doom 3, the logs, emails, etc. Well, it was the first game I ever played where the only way to follow the story was from reading logs left lying about.

The polygon count is very low, however, there is a patch on the internet that upgrades it slightly. I reckon the original Cyborg Midwives looked the best for creepy points.

"Look at you, h-h-h-hacker...a pathetic creature of meat and bone" :D

Or disappointment.

SS2 was great in its day - be prepared for it looking like complete shite now. I know theres far more to a game than visuals etc etc, but it really does look dated, and as such I found a recent revisit to be an anti-climax. When it came out, though, boy did SS2 scare the crap out of me. In many ways it is still better and more sophisticated than anything released since.

Let's hope Bioshock is up to the job.

Bioshock will spook you like System Shock 2 did.

Personally, I've never played this game but have seen someone playing the game to the end. The game looks good.

SS2 is scary. I've never played a game, seen a movie, or anything that scared me like that game did. Like I'm walking down a hall and a camera spots me, so I just shoot at the camera and then turn around and there's 2 enemies making sounds and hitting me. Doom 3 was nothing compared to SS2 (in terms of horror factor)

Dammit! I hate whenever there is a discussion about SS2 people bitch about the graphics.

GRAPHICS DO NOT MAKE A GAME YOU SPOILED RETARDS, GAMEPLAY AND STORY DOES.

I'm not refering to everyone, some people are just pointing out the fact that the game has dated graphics (Warbie) and the spoiled retards may or may not like it.

Sorry, had to say it.

@Thread Starter: 1 thing you can expect is one hell of a time getting it to run on XP, you may be a lucky one and get it working with no problems, but I've got a few tips for you if it doesn't work:

1) Install the game to it's default path (mine was c:/games/SSHOCK2).
2) Download the Windows XP patch/fix to get it compatible with XP.
3) If you get to actually play the game, but it crashes a few minutes after you start the actual game, you need to do this:

-Start game to get to the games main menu
-CTRL+ALT+DELETE
-Go to the "Processes" tab
-Find SS2.EXE
-Right-click on it and in the drop-down menu click "Set Affinity" (On some machines it is "Set Connection")
-Disable the 2nd CPU (On mine I've got CPU 0, and CPU 1, so I disable CPU 1.)
-You must do this every single time you play, there is a way to make it do it automatically, but it's really complicated.

4) Download REBIRTH and SHTUP mods for it if you cannot stand the graphics, they just replace the low-res textures in the game with high-res ones, making the game look alot better (Doesn't edit models, just textures).

This forum can help you with any XP compatibility issues you have, and any other questions. There's two stickies that have probably addressed any possible issue by now. http://www.ttlg.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=78

There's a couple of graphical updates, the main one being... rebirth... I believe, should be on the official SS2 site.

It's a damn good game, my only gripe was how easy it became with the pwnagecannon, aka assault rifle. I recommend wrench-only, though perhaps not for the first run through, it's quite possible and a challenge.

What system was it originally intended for? Win 98 on a Pentium III for example? When I get around to it I'm going to throw an old OS onto a machine specifically to play this game in it's original state.

TBH, System Shock 1 > System Shock 2, but SS2 is still a great game, but compared to the original, inferior.
I definitely recommend getting the original(CD vers) and running it with DOSBox, it's a great great game.

It was the wierd monkeys that scared me the most. :(

Heh, he loves just a few minutes away...interesting, I never thought--err, I'll shut up now :p

EDIT: 1,000th post, only took me slightly less than three years...

Jangle is a wimp. Worryingly, he loves a mere 20 minutes away. D:
freudian slips ahoy :naughty:
I'll give the game a good shot over the weekend and report back (assuming I can get it running)

Then it must be possessed!
God compels thee!*Throws water at Samons keyboard*

Topic should read "So I finally found God".

Oh come on, now you're just trying to look cool :p

Shock 1 is a great game, but it isn't essential to understand Shock 2, and it's nowhere near as polished. Whilst the "graphics isn't everything" crowd would hit me for saying so, Shock 1 is very difficult to love initally, even if the crude graphics do lend it all a certain scary edge (noes! the sprite men are coming to take me away!). Besides, regardless of the graphics, you have to wrestle with a game that doesn't give you the option of mouselooking. It's like playing a Console FPS on a joypad that has 48,000 buttons.
