uh oh.. cd drives are cheap anyways..

but you could try going into your device manager and uninstall the driver for it, and then reboot and it will reinstall the driver for ya..

try it out..

XP comes with its own set of CD drivers, so use those.

Just download the game through Steam, and then go to > Browse Games > Register a product I already own > insert cd-key.
And when you do buy a DVD drive, get a writer, they're nice

Yeahm registering the HL2 DVD requires you to install it.

Suggestion 1
Get a friend to lend you his DVD drive for the installation and registration, then download the no DVD crack until you get your own DVD/fix your old.

Suggestion 2
Register it at his place, go home, reboot, log into steam, double-click HL2, wait for the decryption to finish, install the crack (where you find that is up to you, but it's called hijack_hl2 or something).

If it doesn't allow you to unlock your preload files, you -might- need to burn "half life 2 content.gcf" on a CD and put it in steam\steamapps.
Hope your drive takes CD's fine.

Er don't you know the difference between a dvd and a cd? I don't mean to sound offensive but it's a pretty simple and commonly known difference....
