I just watched the alternate ending, and the reason the world was in ruin was because he took 2 drops too many and over-slept, so his actions still had no effect on the present

that is a very interesting question, Im guessing it has to be a different world, because he did pretty much teach them how to do all that stuff. And besides theres like witches, magic and dead skeletons walking around, so it must be a diff. world
