I haven't worked out in a while-almost two years actually. Kinda expensive, but i can justify it if i go everyday. Question: What do you guys do for exercise? i know this is a geeky hl2 forum, but not everyone sits on their computer all day, right? i'm a geek, but i need to get in shape. i have 19% body fat last time i checked. not very impressive. i'm not overweight by general standards, but i definitely need to lose that fat. does anyone here lift weights on a regular basis? i have forgotten my split workouts. what kind of schedule do you guys do and what particular weight exercises do you guys do on those days?
eg. tues, thurs - bicep( bicep curls, etc), triceps, shoulders
mon-wed-fri chest, abs(crunches, etc), gluts

does anyone here know about that kind of stuff?

I have a fairly strict regiment consisting of:

Monday: Nothing
Tuesday: Nothing
Wednesday: Nothing
Thursday: Nothing
Friday: Nothing
Saturday: Shifting trolleys for B&Q for 8 hours in usually shitty weather.
Sunday: Shifting trolleys for B&Q for 6 hours in usually sunny weather.

Seriously though, I'm a lazy sod and since I gave up smoking (cigarettes suppressing hunger when you smoke one), I've put on a couple of stone in weight, which I need to get rid of. I'm 6ft 1 and about 14/14.5st atm.

I take Hapkido.
And from Monday to Friday, for one hour, I go to the community centre and take weight training(light weights).
I don't want to waste my summer so I decided to get into shape.
I start with stretching and a five minute bike warm-up.
I started about a month ago.
Then I plan to make a tricking sampler.

 I don't lift weights or anything. Every morning about 6:00 AM I go run 2 miles with my mom. Well before the runs we do stretches, after though I do push up's and sit up's and that is all, keeps me fit so I know it is working.

I try to do a general workout three to five times a week depending on my work scedule.

I generally get 9 excercises in in an hour.

I always do: Bench press, Lat pull, dumbell curl.

Then I do whatever I havent done in the last two sessions: Dead lifts, bar curl, adducator, leg extention, leg curl, shrugs, abs, bench pulls as well as a few others thrown in.

Is it true that when you're done excercising and all of a sudden you sit down, your ass gets bigger?

Im a worthless fatbody, but lemme tell ya, my right hand sure is built

I play hockey in the winter and summer, as well as ref in the winter.

I also ref soccer and I play golf in the summer...but I golf like a nut, everyday, sometimes 2-3 times a day.

And I like to play tennis whenever I get a chance too

i go to New York Sports Club gym (im 15)
monday: back-biceps
tuesday-triceps and chest
wensday- cardio (running)
thursday- Legs,Abs
Friday- Off
Saturday-Cardio
sunday- Off

and i do 15 mins of running on an incline before it all.

lol my schedule revolves around my bed, computer & my games practically all year 'round (well there are schools to consider sometimes ;)). Sitting here by the computer all day might make you think that I'm a fat person. Nope. Completely the other way around. I don't get it :) Genes should be banned...

I've never had a muscle shortage or anything, so I mostly just try to keep from overeating. I only do something physical when a I want to, which is usually occasionally.

you mean completley the other way as in like Mackenzie Crook the most skinny person on TV?

I do a lot of training for rowing. For cardio ie losing weight, I row, or erg (that's rowing machine). Usually about at least hour a day, but any kind of cardio, running, biking, swimming, will do. You might want to work up to longer times if you haven't been doing regular exercise. Try starting at 25 min or so and adding 5 or 10 min every week.

For weights, over the winter I did cycles of upper and lower body twice a week. But as we get on the water in the spring, they start to get phased out. Ones I do are:

upper body:
bench press (use barbells if you can't get a spot)
bench pull/1 arm pulls
military press
lat pull downs
wide grip chinups
fly
reverse fly
tricep extensions
3/4 lateral raise
arm dyno

core:
sit ups with weights
twister
jack knife
superman

lower body:
leg dyno
leg press
squats
cleans
hang cleans
hamstring curls
lunges

Obvisously I'm not doing all of this in one session. If you need an explanation for some of these just ask.

The most exercise I get is typing and lifting large boxes up in anger looking for my Xbox live mic.

I played football for my lasy 2 years in high school, and I also lifted wieghts for 2 years at my high school.

I ran laps tuesdays and thursday (Atleast 1 mile)

and Monday, Wensday, friday I did Squats, Bench Press, Military Press, Power Cleans.

I rarely post here, or browse, but I have some advice for working out...

If you want to lose weight I suggest the first thing you do is go on a strict diet. You don't have to go on Atkin's or anything controversial, but just eat what looks healthy. The #1 way to lose fat is to cut your calorie intake, especially when you eat 2-3 times your suggested daily value (2000).

When you are at the gym I suggest you stick to cardiovascular workouts rather than anaerobic workouts (weight lifting)...especially if you are just trying to cut the fat. Run on the treadmill for 1-2 miles or do the cross country machine if you don't want to "possibly" mess up your knees. After that I would go on a bike machine for another 2-3 miles. The end of the day should probably be concluded with about 10 laps of freestroke swimming in the pool.

If you stay on this schedule of dieting and aerobic excercises for about one month you'll notice drastic improvements in your weight and the way you look. You aren't going to look buff at all, so don't get your hopes up. When you reach a healthy weight level then you should do half of your aerobic workouts and fill in the other half of your time with anaerobic workouts, like benching and weight lifting.

I lift the most at my school in our gym so my routine may be different than what you can find at a local gym. I'm in football so my aerobic excercises are taken care of out in the field, then when I lift my routine usually consists of:

Monday:
*Hang Above Cleans
- 5 reps / 2 sets
- 5 reps / 2 sets
- 5 reps / 1 set

*Cleans:
- 5 reps / 2 sets
- 5 reps / 2 sets
- 5 reps / 1 set

*Clean Pulls:
- 5 reps / 3 sets
- 5 reps / 1 set

*Push Press:
- 5 reps / 2 sets
- 5 reps / 2 sets
- 3 reps / 2 sets

*Squats:
- 5 reps / 2 sets
- 5 reps / 3 sets
- 5 reps / 2 sets

*Hammer Jammer:
- 10 reps / 2 sets
- 10 reps / 1 set

*Wall Squats:
- 1 rep / 2 sets

*Jog:
- 2 laps

Tuesday:
*Bench:
- 8 reps / 3 sets
- 4 reps / 2 sets
- 2 reps / 1 set

*Leg Press:
- 5 reps / 5 sets

*Triceps:
- 7+7+7 / 2-3 sets

*Rowing Machine:
Lateral - 10 reps / 3 sets
Vertical - 10 reps / 3 sets

*Wall Squats:
- 1 rep / 2 sets

*Jog:
- 2 laps

Wednesday
*Hand Above Snatch:
- 5 reps / 2 sets
- 5 reps / 2 sets
- 5 reps / 1 set

*Snatch:
- 5 reps / 2 sets
- 5 reps / 2 sets
- 5 reps / 1 set

*Snatch Pull:
- 5 reps / 3 sets
- 5 reps / 1 set

*Squat:
- 5 reps / 2 sets
- 5 reps / 2 sets
- 5 reps / 1 set

*Wall Squats:
- 1 rep / 2 sets

*Jog:
- 2 laps

Thrusday
*Bench:
- 8 reps / 3 sets
- 4 reps / 2 sets
- 2 reps / 1 set

*Leg Press:
- 5 reps / 3 sets

*Biceps:
- 10 reps / 2 sets
- 8 reps / 2 sets

*Chest Machine:
- 10 reps / 3 sets
- 10 reps / 1 set

*Shoulder Machine:
- 10 reps / 3 sets
- 10 reps / 1 set

*Butterfly / Shoulders:
- 7 reps / 2 sets
- 25 reps / 3 sets

*Wall Squats:
- 1 rep / 2 sets

*Jog:
- 2 laps

On sets I usually start at 60% of my max lift and incrementally move up each set until I finish out at about 90% of my max lift. The gym should have machines that do everything I do at my school, except for clean and jerks and snatches, which are platform lifts.

I don't know if you are serious about getting into shape, but it takes determination and time. You definately will feel better physically and mentally, even though it may not seem like it. I've never been fat so my motivation to work out has never been to look good, but rather to get better at football, but for anything that starts working out it usually gets addicting. Good luck man...work hard, stay off the computer if you can (it really helps), and stay focused...

Bah, I'm a teenager. These are the only years of my life I can survive solely on Coke and microwave pizza, and I don't intend to waste them. :D

SensesFail,

Are pushups a good way to sculpt your body? And no one answered my other question...if you sit after a workout or something...does your ass really get bigger?

I would recommend that you start going to the gym. It may not do much now, but later in life when you want to stay/get back in shape it will be much easier because your body remembers what being in shape is like.

If you survive on junk and dont go to the gym thats what your body will expect for the rest of your life and you will find it difficult to gain mass and loose weight.

Think ahead dude, think ahead!

Pushups are part of a workout, but there are better ways to do what they do. If your into body sculpting what that really means is your working individual muscles so they stand out. Pushups will give your upper body a more general type of workout. In any case they are much better for hardening your knuckles than working out.

No, sitting down after a workout does not make your ass fat.

It's not that I don't exercise, its that I find the idea of going to the gym to be an absolutely massive bore. I'd rather go water skiing, hike, or ride my dirtbike (anyone who doesn't think that would burn some calories has never done it). Sitting around lifting weights just isn't my sort of thing.

Well, what about crunches?

You can to a fitness orientation-which is what I take.
It usually has stationary bikes and you can watch T.V. while you're at it!

And about lifting weights.
Don't do the kind that give you big gigantic man muscles that prevent you from using forks and spoons. Go for light weights.
I am also a teenager...I do light weights...heavy weights would stunt my growth.
It's better to do light weights up until you're 18 or around that age and then move onto heavy weights.

Monday, Wednesday, Friday = 3 hour footy practices (2 hours cardio/sprint, 1 hour with the ball); Tuesday, Thursday = 40 lengths of an olympic-sized pool, Saturday and Sunday = a light jog in the morning (no more than 6 miles). Everynight = 3 x 15 pushups (judo style) + 2 x 35 situps (knees off ground, legs in air).

I play hockey in the winter, fall, and spring. I also lift 11 pound weights before I go to bed. I have to start doing my sit ups, I am getting a tummy.

Yep, the gym is for pussies.

That sounds really funny coming from a *BRITNEYSPEARSS.T.A.L.K.E.R

You wouldn't believe the stamina it takes... but lately it's been easy since she broke her leg. :p

my workout:

monday: 4 hrs of straight cs (exausting I know but it preps you)
tuesday: 6 hrs of forum browsing.. phew
wenesday: wipe bug guts from monitor
thursday: clean mousepad
friday: jack off

Sorry, but pushups can really, really give tone to your upper body. In fact it's more effective than doing certain weights, as you work your arms, your upper body, and your abdominals. If you do slow pushups, and rest by just staying elevated in the pushup, it can really give you tone. "Hardening knuckles" is about the most false thing i've ever heard. Go search google for pushups, and you'll get some good results.

I've always found that specific workouts for specific muscles help much more than pushups, but, as you pointed out, it depends on technique.

To each his own.

Do fifty knuckle pushups on a asphalt driveway every day. If you've never done them before, you knuckles will be putty. After a few months, they'll be carved out of wood.

fightclub (filler words because that was supposed to be a snappy short reply)

Jack off every night. Sometimes I jack off twice in one night, but thats only for special occasions.

I really don't think you'll have to worry about stunting your growth while trying to lift heavy weights unless you are still encountering growth spurts or are under 14...I've been 5' 11" since I was 14 and I haven't grown an inch since, but each person grows at their own rate. My take on lifting heavy weights vs. light weights is factored around what kind of body shape you are looking for.

A lot of reps with light weight will tone your body and make your muscles really pronounced...you won't be big (I'm not talking arnold big...I'm just talking larger than your original mass) but your muscles will be really obvious and defined. Just on opinion, I find that purely sculpted people who have no mass to back up their "muscles" seem scrawny...but to most I suppose that would be adequate for what you'd want...

Short reps with heavy weights (close to your max) will built up tissue fast. If you are really small, tall, or lanky than your body will finally fill out. I usually lift in this type of scenario and I'm definately not bulked out like the guys you see on tv. I'm 5' 11" and weight 175 lbs...but my arms are a lot bigger, my pects are there, and muscles can still be seen...

The best workout when lifting weights is to cover the entire spectrum available. When you bench you should push yourself really hard one day and do as many lifts as you can with high %'s...then the next day work entirely on toning your body by lifting large reps...Being huge and puttylike isn't good, neither is being scrawny and defined.

This whole topic is to far ahead of the original poster's need...cardiovascular is essential to lose fat...push ups, sit ups, crunches, or any of those methods aren't going to burn the fat. Push ups are similar to benching but workout a larger majority of muscles...you'll get muscle underneath the fat and then you'll look huge...like the guys you see on espn's stongest man in the world competition...stay clear of those basic workouts and get running...buy a bike..go swimming...join a sport! Don't get sidetracked and think push ups or situps are the answer...those are for further down the road...when your fat is gone.

Order of importance:

1.) diet
2.) cardiovascular activity
3.) building muscle mass
4.) toning muscle mass

P.S.: If you get strong and build muscle...don't slack up on lifting, muscle turns almost directly back into fat and you'll be just as bad, if not worse, than where you originally started...

I lift weights. Technically I'm a body-builder but I can't afford to go to the gym. So the gains are uh... comin slowly :|

ya, forums are pretty gay. I started to hate nerds...and the immaturity on that damn forum...I wish I could take back all that wasted time I spent sitting on my ass debating some recluse who's only girlfriend was the thing he used to type and turn on the computer with. I can see your 700 post count says you are either that lost soul I once was or that recluse I've spoken about...games and forums usually cause me to think my life is headed in the direction of the comic book guy from the simpsons...and with every "1337" or "me thinks" that some kid says I know the people I'm associating with isn't helping my goal of becoming normal in the end...man, I sound insecure...but hell, life outside of the computer is wonderful!

This is my last post on this forum...I just spoke up from the crowd to help a person who seems like they were trying to make a change for the better. I obviously sound naive and rude...but I might as well be blunt to describe how I feel...

I use to work out a lot more but it's fair. 17 years old, 5'7, 145lbs, putting up 215 on bench press and various other work outs...so yeah i try to keep busy.
