Taking a shot here that someone will be willing to give me a hand, rather than just spout a bunch of 1337 nonsense about being a n00b, etc. :)

Just got CS:S and I've never CS'd before. What do I need to know? Any good websites that give a rank beginner a few pointers to get me started up so I'm not a TOTAL detriment to whatever team has the misfortune to end up with me? :)

Any pointer on customs and courtesies would be helpful, too. I've been booted off of other servers for other games for not observing some fine point of ettiquite of which I was ignorant.

Anyone care to help the n00b? :)

Thanks! I appreciate that. Any other tips, folks? I'm going to be getting on a server for the first time in a few hours, and I want to be as prepared as I can be.

It's not exactly complicated ... I never bothered with a guide, you really don't need it that much :) Don't worry!

I didn't really expect it to be all that complicated - I just want to avoid stepping on someone's toes, and inciting a teammate to spend the rest of the round shooting at me, ya know?

Basically dont call someone, but if u say something bad about someone either "lol" or say "blah blah u blocked me, but no probs".

erm, try not to TK :p erm, if u do, appologise. dont camp, dont argue with someone, dont cheat, dont abuse, dont act like an admin....

Sit back and see how others play the game and copy them.

Thanks, chriso. That was the kind of thing I was looking for.

BTW, TK = team kill? Taking a WAG.

Don't throw flashbangs in front of your mates, especially when they're rushing. Don't take point, follow the bomb carrier, and watch those corners (and I mean every corner!).

"Don't take point" - good advice! Honestly, I doubt that would have even occured to me. :)

Just something that has helped me through playing counter-strike: "Never look at your weapon, or Muzzle Flash" It will become a distraction. :p

so true i spend hours drooling over the pretty curvesof my m4a1 :p

Oh and one more thing, if you spotted an enemy and he ran behing a box or cover, that's the cue to use your frag grenade. :)

Take your time, aim for the head try to make it one shot one kill, use cover. Go with the team! If you get in trouble you can always hide behind them. When in the team with about 4 or 5 players squadding, try to use 2x2 formation, one guy should always keep the rear covered, preferabally by walking backwards, as soon as you see an enemy, crouch and find cover, inch out and target their head or torso, dont go for points like arms and legs.

If you come face to face with a guy with a bigger weapon, try to jump about as he fires his clip off, then take him out, no use both of you hitting squat and then reload after expending a clip.

Other than that just have fun and take your time, learn the maps before hand and remember the key points where ambushes and cover work best.

Good Luck.

Hehe, I wouldn't call myself a n00b as such, but even that's good advice to soemone like me. Especially the Take point, as I usually Rush to get a jump on the enemy.

good thread.

Just play the game as often as feels good for you, don't push it trying to get good, and getting angry when you don't succeed.

You will get better and better I can promise you, you start to 'feel' where to aim the crosshair of different guns at different distances. You won't even realize you're doing it.

Couple of pointers on map type-

de_ maps: the point of these maps is that the terrorists rush to a bombsite and plant the bomb. Whereas the counter-terrorists are supposed to defend the bombsites.

cs_ maps: these are hostage maps, here the Ts defend the hossies and the CTs must rush to rescue them and take them to a rescue point.

(you will notice that these are ignored a LOT on public severs)

For rushing smoke nades work very well- especially on maps like aztec where you might be rushing into a nest of snipers. As has been stated avoid flashbangs until you are confident in your nade throwing abilities....everyone hates a team flasher :)
Use your radar aswell, it will give you a good idea of where your teammates are (enormously helpful on friendly fire servers).

I could go on and on about technique but I'll leave it there, as you'll learn your own style as you play (besides which - for all I've learnt over the last couple of years, I still manage to have memory blackouts half the time and wind up running round like a loon instead of thinking- sometimes it seems a very good technique btw :D )

Actually one last point before I go watch scrapheap-

Learn the maps. And the best way to do this is to play..... ;)

It means don't take the lead position in the assault. Let some more experienced players do that - and WATCH THEM - learn.

Thanks for all the good advice! I'm catching up on some email, then I'm going to pop into my first server. If anyone happens to bump into me, my tag will be "Kelt"

Ok thanks. I thought it meant dont kill someone that a teammate is already shooting at and "take their point" lmao. Obviously that wouldnt help your team very much..
I rush quite a lot actually. I blame getting killed quickly more on not enough people rushing rather than me being a noob though.
Oh and can anyone tell me why the players with very good scores appear to have worse aims than other players?? I often see them shooting at the ground below an enemy and stuff when i know i wouldnt have done that (i always try to aim directly at the enemy), yet usually their scores are better than mine. Maybe its just a coincidence but i see it a lot. Still, i can pwn sometimes, especially in office.

I think the whole aiming at the floor thing is about if you are emptying a whole clip off at someone (maybe if surprised?), and because your racoil increases the longer you fire, you can't just aim at the enemy or not a bullet will hit him.

Well, THAT was certainly a trial by fire. :) Played for a few hours today.

I liked it - I learned a TON - even managed to get some decent kills. Thanks for the advice folks!
