How does CS:S compare up to the original? I.e., is it completely and utterly the same except for improved graphics and ragdoll physics?

CS:S comes across as a showpiece to portray precisely what the Source engine is capable of, more like a taster for HL2 and the rumoured CS2, so if it's entirely identical to CS 1.6 it's understandable.

Mostly I'm interested in things like bullet penetration, or if there's a noticable change to the armour or hitbox dynamics, or if there're any dial-uppers out there who have somehow managed to play it...

i played CS now and then, but it always felt a bit to messy and moddy, even in 1.6, CSS feels great to me, ive had a lag free fun experience, i know others would disagree, but the general feeling ive had from players is "wow" , "cool" , and my favorite "lemme start a clan!"

CS:S feels like a WHOLE new game, at times with the AWP and stuff it can piss you off like 1.6, but it is a awesome game.

And bullets only show on walls not people.

Gee, I'm sorry killer, I'd forgotten that because you and I pass for regulars we can treat each other like dirt and decide that patronisation is the new politeness. God.

And bullets only show on walls not people.

Yeah, I just read about that in the Valve info thread, but apparently they're looking into it; I have to admit I've long wanted to see bullet holes in some T's head ;)

In my opinion, CS:S is a lot better than 1.6. While the hitboxes are not perfect, they are better than 1.6. All the guns seem to be slightly more accurate, and it involves a lot less luck and a bit more skill. Frags are not as useful, meaning they can't hurt you through walls, but I thought this was definately a change for the better. Flashbangs are a lot better now; they flash you fully even if it's behind you, although if you are facing away from it, it doesn't last as long. The new scenery and improved graphics tied in with the GREAT physics is very nice and it runs very good (25-40 FPS) on low-med end computers.

Damage-wise everything is pretty much the same- including the AWP- you decide if that's a good thing. The rates of fire on some guns have been slowed/sped up a bit. Smoke grenades are pretty nice, they turn from grey to black in tunnels and when you walk through the smoke, your vision gets darker, but you can see out of it better, making it an effective weapon against AWP wielders.

The graphics are nice in de_dust, but someone modded the video stress test demo and put spawn points in it. I have played this and it looks beautiful. The water effects/physics of wood/video screens/spinning pic of Hordon are all superb, and I had lots of fun just piddling around in the level, shooting the video monitor off the pedestal and splashing around and suiciding in the water to watch the good ragdoll.

I don't have 56k, but I can remember it well. Getting headshots and kills in general will still be difficult for those who have it =(

Overall, and still in my opinion, CS:S is one hundered times better than 1.6. Hope that helps. If you've got any other questions, just ask.

Morgue: just hearing that HEs no longer cause damage through walls cheers me up no end. I might consider living with system and online lag to see that alone

The smoke grenade and flashbang changes intrigue me; and anything improving accuracy as opposed to letting us rely on random radial scatter-shots gets my thumbs up too. Sounding better and better! Danke, all and sundry...

Hey Morgue, can you tell me where I can download this mod and how to make it work please?

Heh, even I can answer that for you mate ;)

You need to own either Counter-Strike: Condition Zero or an ATI voucher (that formerly entitled you to HL2 only). Using the supplied CD-Key, you can then download CS:Source through Steam. I think that's right...

Unless you're talking about the edited VST map he mentioned, in which case I'll be quiet...

I especially like the SURROUND SOUND. It is incredibly useful.

I think the smoke grenade takes a little too long to kick in, and though it isn't really important, the hitboxes on the world objects are pants.

Bitte, I wish you good luck with getting broadband too.
I might consider living with system and online lag
Just out of curiosity, what are your system specs? I have a Pentium 4 1.7GHz / Nvidia Ti 4600 DX8.1 / 1Gb Ram machine. If I turn most of the graphics to low and the resolution to 640x480, my typical FPS is 30-50 FPS even in large firefights (but the game is still very nice looking even on these low settings).

I think the gameplay in source has changed quite abit.

I use to get and average of 20 - 5 score on cz, but now i get 10 - 8. I have noticed that guns stability and accuracy have been changed dramaticlly. I know this is just a beta and this could be caused by my horrible 20 - 30 fps (in gun fights) but this is not the same counter-strike I've grown up to enjoy (except for the community).

My 2 cents.

P.S: I like the graphics and physics! :)

I have CZ and have CS:S beta but wondering how I can be in that "map" too

System specs? Let's see... 2000+ AMD Athlon (i.e., an overrated 1600), 512 megs of ram, GeForce FX 5700. I'd have to run it low detail (to the extent it looks worse than the original Half-Life!) if I wanted to experience physics and suchlike properly...

I really like CSS.
You don't freeze like you used to when shot. It seems everyone dies quicker and it is more team related as a result. No one guy tearing it up most of the time.

Any gun can get a heatshot as it seems it's just 1 hit. Quite often I've pulled out my pistol as I'm falling back and notice the guy hits the floor. Did I do that? It has surpised me at times but it's nice that they actually get hit and die.

Nades are different since they are physics objects now. If you bounce them off walls you have to throw them farther as they don't go far after they hit a wall or floor. It's nice though as it doesn't go beyond your target.

It's a lot harder to slide a FB around a corner and rush without getting blind. There is a lot more throwing and waiting before the rush.

Most of the guns do very well and don't 'suck'. I have not had any issues with AWP whoring or anything like that. FB's are even more effective, especially against AWPers.

And of course physics are really fun. :) Just need another map. :hmph:

CSS graphics have really impressed me, the reflections off your weapon skins from your surrounding environment are amazing. Also walking through the tunnel on your way to bombsite A astounding experience IMO, first the tiles on thefloor give off an accurate relfection of the sun gleaming through the tunnel and when you look up you see particles of dust floating in the air. Tie that in with depree flying everywhere, teammates ragdolling realistically and 1.6 goodness and CSS is one of the best games I've played in awhile.

Two things they really need to fix are the crosshair speed and hit detection. I constantly find myself switching weapons get my Xhairs to stabilize quicker, I'll also shoot a guy like 8 times with an M4 until he turns around and kills me without taking any damage:(.

Great game, so far:D
