So is this THE patch?

It'd be nice if we were fricking told what the deal is. This "patch" doesn't work for me and now my load times are completely unacceptable. Is this the patch or a midway fix?

Now I have new stutters, weird hard drive noises, memory errors and crashes that take out XP. And none of that was there before the last couple of hours. Plus Windows XP loading times mysterious quadrupled but a System Restore to a couple of days back fixed that.

Deeply weird.

There Was No Patch You People Need To Get This Through Your Heads!

Seems more like an experimental patch or a part fix more than anything.

My load times have become pretty bad but in exchange the unusual stuttering has all but dissapeared it seems.

Something has definataly changed.

When steampowered news is talking about "the changes" and an "update" and "this release" then they obviously don't mean hardware tips.

http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=news

Something downloaded, it was a very small download and now, for me, HL2 has all sorts of problems it never had a couple of hours ago. That happened a lot for me with Counterstrike: Source beta patches. Coincidence? Hmmm...

Yeah, I've noticed that my XP loading times are much longer.
WTF is Valve doing to my comp?!

What happened for me is that the loading page with the little animated blue bar was there for ages while the harddrive light was mostly off and not its usual heavy activity. XP took maybe 2 to 3 minutes to load instead of maybe 20 to 30 seconds.

But as I say, going back to a System Restore point from a couple of days back fixed it. Try that and see if it works for you too.

I just finished playing after the wonderful new "patch", and I had to quit because I just wasn't having fun. Every time I turned a corner Barney started having a seizure, trying to speak, but my computer just wouldn't let him. The problem has definitely gotten worse.

Whatever was downloaded -- and Steam claimed twice exactly that -- HL2 has been altered and is behaving very differently for me than it was before Steam said this.

All hell has broken lose since then for HL2 for me and this PC was not switched off, nothing was installed or removed, nothing was altered by me at all. IE and Wordpad were started and shut down a couple of times and that's it.

You sure Lamar hasent invaded your PC and got caught up in the rendering pipelines.

There is no spoon. Mine did not patch. No changes in updates, monitor or game properties. I feel lied to. When are they going to take this seriously. I can't play without crashing and stuttering. No fun. :rolling:

Let me say to all of you.

There is a patch. It remediates the problem 90%. If you feel it does nothing, then I'm sorry, your computer is f**cked. :D

The patch gave me my HL2 problems. What it seems to do is make my harddrive behave differently. It completely shuts down intermittently and this kills HL2.

It's almost like Valve fiddled with the Windows drivers and my Seagate 80 GB didn't like that.

Hehe, I tried on my other pc, loaded it up, went to a save point, it minimized the game for no apparent reason, then I restored it again, loading was like 10 mins or so, then got stuttering, more of it. Hehe, I don't care much, I already finished the game, but I'd like to know what was in that patch.

Weird. Now, I loaded Steam twice tonight after seeing the news on Valve's page. I can see no update. Haven't tried playing yet though, but as far as I can tell, no update was made for me. *scratches head* Maybe they pulled it? Hearing *BAD* reports all over...

I know what you mean. I just finished the game on hard last night and it's a good thing I did.

What's funny for me is that this patch has given me just about every error that everyone else with problems has complained about but I didn't have. Now I can say that I have the complete set of bugs. :D

I wish they'd just give an option to uninstall patches if they do more harm than good as that way, if they help people, then great, but if they don't, then people are not stuck with new problems.

I just have more stuttering and longer load times, thats about it. I am glad I haven't recieved all the errors others have been having. :)

The download didn't show up on the Steam monitor either, other than to say HL2 and CS:CZ had been updated but no download activity appeared in the activity recording thing. From the time it took, it was only a couple of megabytes or less, whatever it was.

Didn't tell me it updated at all. Where did you see this? (Or are you talking about news?) I really wish there was some sort of history to see (monitor history or whatever...but if it didn't appear in monitor, I dunno).

Now, I did try playing it. =o( Not happy. It does seem like something changed. Stuttering seems worse (more frequent, not less), and load times might be slightly longer as well. To be fair, I am using an nVidia card (which they said had other problems not yet fixed), but even so...very disappointing.

Saw that from another forum. I'm all for being patient and was actually quite fine with waiting until a patch was released, but at this point, no, I don't think you were too harsh. For a game that took 6 years to develop, the testing should have been much better than it was, and this issue should have never gotten into the game. Now, a patch is out... Some people can't even tell if they got it (I still don't know...but I can't explain the performance degradations), and for others, it's caused MORE problems, not less. I've only seen a very few posts where it actually appears to work. Very frustrating and very disappointing. It's a good thing I need to finish some other games before I seriously start playing HL2, but even so, I'm beginning to wonder if this is really going to get resolved.

Question, was trying to remove changes that i made to my config over the past week and i found snd_mixahead "0.4" , did i put this is in or was this in the config to begin with? If not then i want to remove it.

Heh, isn't the point of a patch to fix the problem, not make it worse? :) Load times and sutrrering seems to have increased ten-fold...

Plentiful graphical bugs for me now along with the suttering, even though I've used system restore, changed drivers, reverted back to normal default BIOS settings and reinstalled the game.

You wouldn't believe how corrupt everything is now. Half-Life 2 now has a colour format equivalent to a ZX Spectrum or C64.

Superb.

Valve, YOU STINK!

So you've made your cash, you cats just got fatter and the sad thing is you almost had us convinced. You bastards are what makes the game industry stink. Make a potentially great game, hype it up like something rotten, I mean COME ON you guys MUST have bloody known about these stuttering issues during pre release testing!!

I have an unplayable game, but you wankers dont care cos you got your cash. If you had any devotion or love for what you do as programmers, you would not have let this happen. Have you no shame????

has anyone downloaded the update recently? or the update is stopped, from valve?

I think Im downloading the patch right now.....Ill let you know.

Doesent seem like it patched....checked before the patch then after and its the same.....gameplay the same as well.....didnt get worse....playable for me.

me too, no change, steam monitor did make some change dou.
same gameplay.
i am in the citadel :borg: ....

Anybody know what the f*ck is in that update??? I cannot load HL2 now (even re-downloaded) and my system speed is worse than the last time I used it....

I was thinking of sending an e-mail to Gabe @ Valve asking, "Why don't you give the guys at ID a call & get them to give you a hand sorting this problem out?" :-)

Things seem fine for me, updated on both machines and the stutteriing doesn't seem as bad, no stuttering when quicksaving. Monitor says it updated HL2 and HL, I think the steam platform was updated. No idea whats been changed. Load times as slow as usual. I think the actual fix was the link given in the steam page on sorting the bigger problems, the AA stuff being the main cause for everything.

Did you have to set the 'Mat_forcetextureintohardware' command to 1 in the console?

For me it makes no difference if AA is on or off.

You know what pisses me off most about this? That someone can't even fking come in here and let us know if that was or wasn't the damn patch.

Nope, nothing set like that
