I'm 18 and am being kicked out of my home, because my parents are moving down to southern of sweden (I'm staying here in Uppsala which is in the middle of sweden). I need to finish high school etc, and I just found a pretty nice apartment quite close to my school. I dont have to pay for broadband or TV or anything since a family owns it, they basically bought it, i just have to pay for the rent.

I've tried applying for payment for the rent of my apartment, but the government refuse to pay any more than a third, since I still live in the same area as my school. I don't quite understand the logic as I need money to pay the rent as much living here as living 300 miles from my school. But my parents are going to help me out, and I'll be getting the usual student subsidiares.. But I won't exactly be able to afford eating out every single night..

But I actually think it's going to be quite nice moving on my own. I have no idea how I'm going to finance my synth fetish but I suppose it will work out somehow. I'm going to try and get into online poker or a weekend job of some sort, even though it seems to be hard as **** to get one around here.

My friends think it's pretty insane (both in a good and bad way), I'll live much closer to one of my closest friends who I have gotten abit out of touch because of us not living close, but now we'll be able to crash at my apartment, so it's pretty nice. :)

Any tips for making it out in the wild, any cheap recipes or food you can recommend? I just hope I won't forget to buy toilet paper or stuff like that.. and washing my clothes + doing all the dishes is going to suck abit, lol

My swedish friend had the same thing happen to him. He ended up spending his last two years of high school crammed in a shoebox-sized apartment. Hmm...

This happen often with you people?

I'm totally getting a picture here of a mommy and a daddy bird pushing little Harij out of the nest.

"Go on little one, fly, FLY!"

lol, yeah it seems to happen as you leave the safe confinements of money, free food and expensive furniture.

a popular swedish bitpop band called the fight club (yes they ripped off that movie but they're called the swedish substitute for that, slagsmålsklubben) recently moved away from sweden to a tiny apartment in germany, and in an interview they said "the equalivent of being homeless nowadays is living in a tiny apartment with nothing but electronic music gear"

Move to England and I'll move in with you :D

-Angry Lawyer

Haha, that'd be awesome :D

I'm seriously considering moving to england in the future, trying to get together with one of you het/hl2.net or #halflife2 boys just for the heck of it. :D

really your parents are just dumping you and letting you fend for yourself? wow my parents really were old fashioned ..I could probably move in today and they'd be thrilled

dont buy a car if you dont absolutely need ..save money so that you can buy your own apartment ..you'll never save if you're paying rent

also try to make your own food all the time ..much better than store bought and far cheaper ...also mooch off of relatives ..sunday brunch at aunt helgas, fish and chips at grandma's etc

Dont spend a lot of money. Im in a sticky situation here, after only about 4 months on my own :(.

As for food, go to a warehouse store. I dont know what stores are over there, but here in the US there are places like BJ's, Sams club, Costco etc. that sell in bulk amounts for cheap. You can get like 8 boxes of mac and cheese for the price of two boxes at retail (just an example). Usually you need to pay for membership, but you will probably save that much or more on your first purchase.

Biggest tip I can give is to mind your wallet. Now that you are on your own, you will be paying for a lot more stuff and if you dont keep track of it all, you might mess up and overdraft your checking account or something (personal experience ).

That'd be epic. We could all pitch in for a five-bedroom house in the south-east, and who knows what shennanigans would take place? :D

Yeah, I'd say go cautious with your money at first, until you figure out how much your outgoings are each month, if you have a lot left at the end of each month, then you know you can start to spend a bit more (or save).

It's fun!

lol stern has it all figured out^^

Stern has everything figured out. Absolutely everything. As much as Stern tells oyu all to disbelieve in God - it's all part of his plan, because secretly, STERN *IS* GOD.

yeah we have cheap ass stores that i used to loathe, but i guess i'll have to consider them lifesavers now.

haha.. yeah. my mother has kind of grown tired of raising her non christian rebellious demon boy who doesnt care about anything in life except "making noise", we've had a large amount of of brush-ins in the latest couple of years and it seems to be the consensus that this is the best sollution.

I'm not great at making my own food but I'm learning that stuff now. pasta seems to be really cheap, meatballs too. vegetables and such stuff is nice, i'll probably keep buying protein shakes.. At first I was like, "oh, i'll just get ready made meals", but if it's that much cheaper making your own food i'll probably drop that idea.

I think I'm really good at being economical, i save up if I have reasons to, and I can live on existential minimum if it means I can save up money for stuff.

save for a house/apartment of your own ...seriously had I done that in my early 20's I'd have seen 100% return on my investment in as little as 7 years. Meaning I'd have an extra $200,000 to play with now. Plus equity (home ownership) is very important

i dont now how that works. here, buying an apartment costs tons and means youll just have to pay a little rent.. buying your own house, isnt that like a ****load of cash?

You know... it's cool of them moving and stuff(they probably moved to get away from you).

However... it's not cool moving and kicking you out before you finish high school. What the **** is up with that?

yeah i asked them that too but they think the house we live in now is too expensive for them, my mom doesnt like me at all for the reasons i mentioned earlier, and she doesnt have any friends here. south of sweden is my birthplace and she has most of her friends and stuff from before the divorce there

Well I'm moving to another city myself, to go to a art faculty, so I'll find out what it's like soon enough (3 weeks) D:

If you pay rent, all the money you pay has just dissapeard. Try saving up for the minimum for a loan. You'll still have to pay X per month, but atleast that money goes into paying for your house. The only money you loose is the interest on the loan, which is what? 4-6% these days? And when you've paid your loan, hey presto! You've got an appartment worth 100,000€! which you can either sell when moving out, or could start renting it. But if you pay rent for the same amount of time that you pay off your loan, you've just given away bucketloads of cash and gotten nothing in return(well, except for a place to live in for X amount of time).

Want a recipe? 2eggs, 2 sliced of bread, Soy suace or something salty sauce, suasages or whatsoever cheap meat... Cook meat first, then dump bread with meat in frying pan, then crack the eggs after 1 min put in 2 sliced of cheese, eat while hot, cold stuff of that is abit avegrage Mayo if optional for topping...

Bread + Bottle Of Ketchup.

It's awesome and so. damn. cheap.

Also, make soup.

Baked Beans on Toast.

You'll get all the nutrients you need, and it costs less than £10 a week.

Agreed, Ketchup and toast pwnts, and for KFC, i finally know how they make it so nice, they first marniate(OBVIOUSLY) and then they boil/steam it until half cookied and then deepfry/grill it very nice if you have an oven and a pot, preferred AMC pot

Damn right - add some curry powder when they get boring and you're good to go :)

While not at all cost effective, paper plates, plastic cutlery, and anti-bacterial wipes are worth their weight in gold. Finish your meal, throw everything away, spill something, get out the wipes!

Most of all, enjoy this time of being able to do what you want whenever you want. All too soon you'll be edging towards the paper plates section in the supermarket and your misses will scream at you for being 28 years old and still trying to eat off bits of paper :(

You should've done what my brother did. Got a good job at 16, then made them pay for all your college, then stay at home rent free until you're 26 and on a £20k+ per year wage.

Is it tradition in the Norhtern countries that the youngsters leave the house so soon? Finland (Suomi) is the same...It's even government funded.
The Italians can learn something from them...

Anyway good for you...Altough being independent means you got to do everything yourself and you'll notice that it's a lot. And you need to do it over and over...Cooking, dish washing, cleaning, clothes washing, paying your bills, garbage, minor chores,...

Any tips for making it out in the wild, any cheap recipes or food you can recommend? I just hope I won't forget to buy toilet paper or stuff like that.. and washing my clothes + doing all the dishes is going to suck abit, lol

Make one-pot recipes: Asian recipies and pasta's and eat out of the coockingpot...just 1 item to wash ;)

Wait a couple of days...I'tll be one big dishwash but it'll be faster than 3 short ones.

If you have friends that come along make sure they don't mess up your place and if they do...make m clean...Hell, they would expect the same won't they?

And for washing your clothes... A washing salon is pretty expensive so try to make a bargain with your neighbour. And use the cheapest product...they're all the same believe me...

Some simple recipies:

Cook pasta in a bowl. Bake some bacon-strips in a pan. Mix some eggs, parmezan cheese and normal one with some cream. Salt and pepper. When pasta is good, Mix it with the cold sauce and bacon-strips. Et voila Carbonara

Same thing but with smoked salmon (< do not bake it).

Experiment with the wok

You know those sandwiches you can buy and after 10mins in the oven you have a fresh and warm bread.
Cut them n two... Add tomatoes, smoked ham and some Gouda-cheese...then for 10min in oven 210°C cheap and lovely

There's a thousand ways to make an omelet

.... maybe more later

Get a friend to buy the apartment next to you. Then you can tear down the wall between you and have one huge apartment :D Although I guess this is a hyresrätt, so the owner would prolly be pissed. I would be worth it though.

Zomg ur a swede, just like me! Why didnt you tell me? We could be making fun of these guys in swedish. Then we will have the "swede guild" here with all the swedes and overthrow the throne and ban everyone we dislike and and..and....yeah! Oh and we are going to have our own secret handshakes, and a secret swede section of the forum!

SWEDISH POWA! Wait shit, did i just say this in english? Jäklar!

Btw there is quite a problem in sweden right now for younger ppl, its very hard to get a job. But im in good hands right now, moved out of sweden and im getting better education.

I've been living on my own for over a month now and its not that hard to get used to it. The biggest so far has been the food. It doesnt magically appear in the fridge like it did back home. Now you have to go to something called a "Store" and buy stuff and walk back with them, brr...

Another weird thing is that I got more money now than when I lived at home. I study at the University so I a lot of money from the different student grants but still... feels like I got more money now than ever :)

But a few tips about foodz:

Pasta.
Make your own food.
Don't get stuff you dont need.
Check www.arla.se for recipes.

Umm... other than that... I dunno.

Good luck! Party hard!

Have been living on my own for 3 weeks now and I also have more money then I used to, and thats despite cooking very little.

My apartment is 18 square meters (about 12 is covered by empty soda cans and bottles...), whats the size of the one you are moving in to?

W00t, the last four posts have been from Swedes! There are more of us than they expected, now is the time to strike!

Seriously though, finding jobs and homes in Sweden is a pain in the ass, especially for young people.

Why don't you guys post in my aweshens Swedish election thread, BTW? :(

If you're in Uni, then talk to the people doing reseach there. They are always looking for people and they pay you for it (~$16,5/hour and up depending on your education and how long you been studying... thats on my uni on computer game related research... can/will differ on other places). also... you get to play with high-tech stuff :)
