Yesterday my 360s DVD-Reader died after close to two years of faithful service, luckily for me, we in the Nordic get two years no-questions-asked warranties from Microsoft, and I bought mine in December 2005, so I just went down to the store with my receipt and the 360, and got a completely new one, was hard letting go of all my gamesaves etc though :(

Anyway, I have no idea why I posted this here, I guess I'm random.

If it makes you feel any better, my 360 is heading for the grave. It makes HORRIBLE sounds reading DVD's and it chews and freezes games. Bah, I've had it for two years as well.

(..... my Wii ftw >_> )

Haha, My 360 is fine. and will probobly live until the Xbox 720 comes out.
Hah.... hah.

It's no use now, but I should let you know that when you exchange a 360 due to mechanical failure, you're allowed to keep your hard drive and just exchange the core unit.

ARGH!!! Goddamnit >_<
Thanks anyway Stigmata :p
I guess I should have realized I could keep my old harddrive.. Oh well xD

LOL. Oh well, at least you know next time to keep your hard drive. :p

This is the kind of thing that is keeping me from buying a 360 right now. I am very excited for the new Falcons to take off this Fall, but I have heard precious little about when and a price cut would be nice too.

Me too. I guess we will be able to tell the difference between the old 360's and the new ones because of the size.

Not to sure though.

VictimOfScience, meh, this launch 360 lasted me longer than my launch PS2.:p

Hahaha! You just never know I guess. I had my PS2 for 5 years before the Disc Read Errors became a problem and they sent me a refurbished one.

Still, if they are making new ones with better hardware pretty darn soon then it just makes sense to wait...though when Mass Effect and Bioshock release it will make it much more difficult to hold my wallet shut!! :D

Intriguing,
now the weather.

2 weeks ago I sent my 3rd xbox360 to microsoft, still waiting for it to return. When the 4th breaks down (notice the use of 'when' instead of 'if') I'll try going to the shop, as you did.

Still is a great console, but rushed unfortunately.

I didn't buy a PS2 at launch, but my original PS1 was a nightmare. I remember going through like 5 of them for a whole slew of problems. Terrible...this is why I now refuse to buy any launch consoles anymore.

BUT, on topic, my friends 360 was from launch...still going strong. Luck of the draw I suppose.

That's unlucky. I've had a launch machine go down on me, but so far the replacement has been fine. It shouldn't be the case, but never buy a 360 online and get some form of cover if possible. Sending it back to MS and being weeks without a console would drive me nuts - plus they send refurbs back!

This is why I refuse to buy a 360. I'm not willing to spend that much money on a console, when I'm not much of a console guy, and then have it break relatively soon.

I had my N64, and it gave me 10 years of service (it's still working).

*snort* kekekekekekekkekekekeke. :p

I thought they actually repeaired your xbox unit, my mate sent his away to MS with a custom faceplate and got the same one back.

man I can buy a $29 dvd player that lasts longer than a $450 high tech toy? we gamers are too complacent, any other business consumers would leave the brand in droves due to unreliability

We don't have the luxury of choice - the PS3 is recent and has few decent games and pc gaming is older than the cheese at the back of my fridge ;)

It does suck, but we goes where the games are.

Yeah, because it's so incredibly hard and tiresome to just take the 360 unit, pack it into your bag, go down to the store where you bought it, give'em your receipt, and get a COMPLETELY NEW ONE totally FREE OF CHARGE.:upstare:

yes but we allow them to take advantage ...consumers dont drive the industry, unlike most other product based industries ..if there were dozens of choices we wouldnt have this problem ..I think the only way we'll break this stranglehold is through convergence ..instead of having a console that plays x games we should have a choice of consoles that all play the same media ...kinda like how a dvd player works or tv sets ..they all have different features but all are capable of playing the same media ...the problem is that console manufacturers dont like this business model as most of their revenue comes from licensing and an open market would mean they have to fight that much more for market share ..as it is now manufacturers build their own audience rather than letting the market dictate their share of consumers. But in the long run we need to break this market stranglehold if we ever want to be as ubiquitous as the movie/music industry.

I've had a few issues with mine. Apparently Microsoft were far too retarded to design their disc tray so that you click the disc in, rather than just slot it in. I've lost a couple 50 quid games due to that.

Still, I haven't had too many problems, bar the sheer stupidity of Microsoft designers.

Yeah, I understand their desire to be FTM, esp. given Sony's lead last generation, but when it comes at the expense of your hardware, that is just not the best business decision imho, esp. when it is to the tune of $1,000,000,000+ in losses posted....

Why buy something that's going to break so easily? Besides, you'd lose all of your saved games.

Besides, I already said that I'm not a console guy in the first place. I'd rather take that money and use it towards upgrading my computer.

ya a big chunk of that is projected loss due to hardware replacement issues

if more companies got into the game (bad pun) hardware costs would fall drastically after a few years making it a non issue

If you'd checked the thread you'd see that if it's a hardware failure then the store can take out your old HD and put it into your new XB, thus keeping all your savegames etc intact.

No matter how easy it would be to take the console back and get a new one, there shouldn`t be any need for it in the first place.

perhaps in your country it's free not so everywhere else ..unless you've payed for an extended warrenty your only option is to send it microsoft ...just because it was easy in your case doesnt mean it's easy for everyone ..the very fact that 1/3 of all xbox360's fail is enough of a reason to be weary before buying one ...consumers seem to think so (well besides you, since you live in a vacuum) the 360 dropped in sales by 60% prior to the extension of all warenties from a year to 3 years ..that decision was made because they didnt have any choice even though it would cost them millions

my xbox died 1 year back.. ahh the memories. of me..taking it to another country, plugging it into a 120 v plug point, the poof sound..ahhh... luckily it was an xbox.

What's with all these Xboxs failing? I only have 1 friend who's Xbox 360 has failed....
Hell, my brother's first gen 360 hasn't had a single problem, and any of my computers have had more problems then my 360

Only problem is it's nigh on impossible to actually break into the market. Nintendo were one of the first, Sony were lucky/perfect with there PS timing, and Microsoft needed a massive financial backing to get into the market.

Along the way there are many consoles that were good if not great (Dreamcast for one) that didn't do well enough to warrant continuation in the console market. Nintendo was nearly out until Pokemon saved them, more or less due to the n64 bombing.

If the Wii had be designed and marketed by a random company it would be passed off as a useless gimic, if the 360 wasn't under such a massive marketing campaign it may well of gone the way of the Dreamcast, (PS wannabe, might as well buy the real thing) and if the PS3 was made by a random company I think very few people would disagree that's it's an overpriced gamble.

yes the only real barrier is deep wallets ..that would change if more companies got into it ..it has to start somewhere

Actually, I think the send it to Microsoft part is only if you get the red rings of death, otherwise you can have it replaced at your local store, and you're right it might not be like that EVERYWHERE else, but hey, are you honestly expecting me to take into the consideration every single on the 100+ countries in the world?
I know for a fact that in all Scandinavian countries you get a 2 year warranty from Microsoft for hardware failures, not sure about red ring of death(Never had one), you also get a 3 year warranty if you can prove that the defect was something that came with the original console.

no you cant get it replaced at a local store unless you buy their extended warrenty ..and yes the 3 year coverage only covers the red ring of death not your specific problem ..which is the second most common problem from what I understand

Over here you can get it replaced at a local store without buying their extended warranty, and its the same in every Scandinavian country atleast, that's what Microsoft says.
But I guess its partially due to national law, for example Swedish law REQUIRES a warranty on certain items to be 2 years minimum, Microsoft cant go around this, even with all their money.

in north america there is no customer protection like what you're talking about

Then I can see how it can be a pain, but I don't live in the USA, and when I was talking I was merely speaking from my perspective.

I still have my SNES, N64, and PS2 ... and they work fine. Never had to send them in/replace them. The only reason I don't mind paying so much for these things is that I consider them investments, that I will be able to dust them off in 10 years and play them. I just couldn't bring myself to buy a console that typically has a 1-2 year lifespan and a (newly instated) 3 year warranty. How does it feel that your console will almost certainly be dead in <5 years? I would never buy a machine knowing that. These things are like ****ing E-Machines.

If I had to rate initial build quality, the list would go...

1) Nintendo
2) Sega
3) Sony
4) MS

This is why Sony and MS don't get my money until their consoles are almost dead and they're moving into their next gen. Further, I buy them preowned...this way, they never REALLY get my money...the poor sap that bought it first paid Sony or MS. That's how I handle shit-manufacturers. "$600 for a PS...you sir are definitly NOT living the High Life." "Must be crazy..."

Nintendo prides itself on building its consoles like Mack-f***ing trucks and taking care of it's customers...therefore, they get my money.

My PS2 and DC died :/ However, my launch Playstation is still working fine - and it gets played every thursday! They don't make em like they used to.

All my Nintendo handhedls and consoles, covered in dust and after being bumped around for years, still work.
