And the worst part is that my 5 year old brother's birthday passed this week

Some blu-ray players have issues when playing the newer Blu-ray titles. The PS3 however is the best choice as a blu-ray player since it is very easy to get updates and they get them a lot more often than normal players get firmware updates.

Just inform him of all of the possibilities that the PS3 offers him and his family. Maybe he is under-educated as to the vast oppotunities for excitement and adventure that the PS3 has to offer. Seriously, maybe he thinks gaming will screw it up or something. Just let him know that loads of us have them and loads of us game hard on them and they continue to do the best things with our Blu-ray collections (i.e. play them). :E
