I have the CE right here just went and got it, so what are everyones first impressions with HL2 (no spoilers please) does it meet your expectations?

I'm rather impressed. Visually the game is top notch. The characters, lip sync, scattered objects, detail in the levels, all make such a convincing environment. The most immersive that I've played. Every level is designed brilliantly. The art direction is second to none. In that aspect, I'm incredibly impressed.

The gameplay didn't impress me much. I understand where the reviewer from Gamespot was coming from now. It isn't that revolutionary, and doesn't really change the standard form factor FPS. Sure, the introduction of physics is a blast to play with, but doesn't really push the genre any further in a given direction. Even the physics based puzzles I've encountered so far were only mildly interesting.

I'm absolutely loving the game though, and that is what matters. The run and shoot gets old from time to time but overall the pacing is smooth and well planned. I'm really more eager to develop the story, so that keeps me going through all the run and gun sections of the game. Hopefully the story won't disappoint. It is developing into an interesting one from the very beginning. I hope they tie up some loose ends though. Got to get back to playing.

I love this game... :)

Even though I'm still at the beginnig of the game(just got the amazing Revolver), everything is great and besides a few things i haven't seen any cons...

Till now my favorite moments are the air boat, hitting manhacks, and the freaking cool Revolver... I've never thought that a pistol can have such a satisfying feel to it... the only thing comparable is the DE from CS...

BTW, anyone else thinks that the jumping-running is a little bit too fast? it's like using the sprint only it doesn't consume energy...

im on entanglement right now (chapter 10 of 14) so far everything looks nice, but what bothers is me is when an NPC is talking to you and wlaking with you (like mossman in the beginning) you can just stand there and she will keep walking and talking like you are following her. i have knocked stuff off tables and i havent heard kliener say "please do be careful" yet. :(

My system : 1.5 CPU AMD ATHLON, 256 DDR RAM , NVIDEA GeFORCE 4 ti 4200
The installation / registration proces is TERRIBLE !!!
Steam servers are way too SLOW.
It took me over 2 hrs to get the instal/reg thing done.
When I finally got to play hl2 it lagged like hell.
Tweaking with the video settings makes my system crash EACH time.
After each crash I have to restart the game , which requires steam kaka again , so I have to wait again.
After steam , its the start/load screen : takes up to 3 minutes.

I've only played the first chapter , all settings on LOW , 800x600 resolution... but the game s even slower than &é§è steam !!!

My first impressions : Steam sucks , hl2 is to slow.

I'm close to chapter 9 of 14 I'd guess.

Story: So far...kinda weak. Spoilers in the tags...but there's not that much to spoil -
You get to city 17 after a short vague intro from the g-man. You meet up with alyx, she helps your get to Kliener's lab (sorta). You get your suit and they try to teleport you to Eli's lab but fail. You're just outside Kleiner's lab and you have to get to Eli's yourself now. You get the airboat soon after and make your way to Eli's lab. You get the manipulator and see dog and such. The place is attacked and you leave through a passage to Ravenholm. You fight your way through Ravenholm and meet some people. You talk to alyx over a tv/radio thing and you take the buggy after you hear Eli's been kidnapped. That's about it so far.

Graphics - Great. Nothing to complain about here

Gameplay - Nothing really revolutionary. I agree with Gamespot. Run 'n Gun more than HL1 so far. Combine AI is worse than Marine AI from HL1...and that's saying something. Valve makes up for the lack in AI by having them do more dmg to you and they set them up in better positions than you. Gravity gun isn't as fun as I thought it would be. I only use it with sawblades and explosive items or to get things out of the buggy's path (once I used it for cover against a sniper).

The weapons are pretty cool. The most fun and satisfying weapons (the revolver, crossbow, and another machine gun) all can't hold very much ammo (revolver - 12 reserve shots, crossbow 10 reserve shots and 1 loaded, other machine gun 60 reserve 30 per clip) and the ammo isn't easy to come by. I really like using those weapons...but too often I find myself using the smg and pistol (occasionally the shotgun) to kill enemies.

Music is great. I could use more of it.

I can see why this game is like 14-20 hours...not because of the plot and story...but because something stops you from moving on...so you either solve a small little puzzle or go off on a tangent to hit a switch or lever. It gets tedious.

I wouldn't have thought that it would be overly revolutionary in many respects. Looking at the bink vidies you should have known that there wasn't any change in respective gameplay.

So far visually the game is top notch. The first chapter is straight from the bink video but what happened at the end surprised me and that was after entering that room where the guard told you to go into. Some places you really don't have time to look around too much because you're constantly on the go go. The only problem ios right now my wife is on the computer doing some business (own online business) and I wont be able to get into the game until she's done.

Thus what happens when you have a sh*tty computer.

Steam works fine..took me 15 minutes to unlock and that's only because I did it the moment the game went live and there were thousands of others on at the same time.

The game is not slow, your computer is. I run it at the highest settings and it runs slicker than iced sh*t.

The game kicks ass. If I had to use one term to describe it I'd have to say action-packed.

Ok , i've played the game for a while now on my brothers laptop (amd Athlon 64 3000+ ; 512 DDRRAM ; ATIRadeon9600) and it runs well.

The game itself is great. The physics are cool , good ai , good gameplay & nice atmosphere.

But still ... my first encounter with steam was a gamers nightmare. it sucked !
And the fact that the game is quite unplayable on my "lower end pc" is another big dissapointment.
(I've played "Rome:total war" on high & med settings and it runs smoothly.)

Everything looks nice. Im on the last level right now, im stuck in the beggining with 4 squad members and dont know what to do. So im gonna goto the store and buy the guide book so I can figure out what to do.

From a tech demo standpoint, it's amazing. From a gameplay standpoint... lets just say I'd rather do some work related tasks instead of playing some more. I'm only about midway through Ravenholm now... so here's hoping I didn't waste $60.

That pretty much sums it up for me too :)

The gameworld valve has created, along with all its tiny details, make HL2 :) The actual gameplay/fighting is pretty average - but i'm usually too engrossed in the experience to care (this could change with repeated play, though)

(loving the physics - being able to reach out and grab a bottle and throw it at someone, or blast a car off a cliff, makes the world so much more believable :))

I love it. It's the best game I've ever played. But I'm kinda disappointed. I was expecting too much. The graphics are great, sounds are delicious. The gameplay is great too, but I get tired of being stop because I have to turn off a switch or something like that. The zombies are too scary :D, especially the ones who can climb a wall and run really fast.

I think the game is unreal. IMHO, Half Life 2 is to gaming what Bladerunner was to the Sci-Fi genre. Why? IT'S ALL ABOUT ATMOSHPERE BABY.

Look, no game is going to totally change the way we play FPS games these days. New features, yes. New visual techniques, yes. But no fps is going to redefine the genre for quite some time. The technology simply wont allow it.

But what HL2 does do that no other game has yet to accomplish is to tell a story through the first person format with an unprecedented level of atmosphere, interactivity, and detail. It really does beat Doom 3 at its own game, and runs 10 times smoother to boot.

I'd say 10/10. The best single player experience in gaming history. But maybe that's just me... :E

Perfect. Insanely fun. Crazy Story. everything is just wow. 10/10

Love it..Surpassed my expectations. I haven't finished it yet but it probably is thee best game i've played.

This is the best game I've ever played... don't know about you guys. Can't wait till Sven Coop 2 comes out and I can start playin with my buddies :bounce:

The graphics are insane. Can't believe that they can look so good without making me lag up. IMO the gameplay is top notch. I enjoyed every second of the first few hours (just got to the church, don't think thats too big of a spoiler and I'm too lazy to use the spoiler thing). I never found it to be too slow (although maybe if I didn't like the graphics and physics so much I might have gotten a lil bored). Every second is unique in some way or shape. I love the characters and how they actually look at you and of course how their lips synch so well.

Oh and something fun you can do if people don't know about it... use gravity gun to shoot paint cans at zombies and they get covered in paint. I found it to be funny first time I saw a white zombie guy...

The game is so crazily interactive I can't control myself!
Waaaa!
:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

God I'm tired...
