I mean, the only real game that has ever, really, really freaked me out is Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines. The first 3/4ths of the game is also really cool, and awesome, etc, etc. The last 1/4th is fighting and killing and maiming, although the endings rock.

I'll just flick straight through everything that describes it, and elaborate later. Pressed for time - listening to Beckett, who is brilliantly crafted, as is all other dialogue in the entire game. Yes, most of the game freaked me out. This particular level comes really early in the game, is a key quest, and is generally the thing that prevents me from restarting with a different character (well, there's the hospital, later in the game, which is really gory...)

Haunted House - ghosts - atmosphere - creepy voices - strange-ass cool stuff - murder - diary - supernatural shit - ...this isn't turning out too well... Doesn't work out as well unless you've played it, does it...

Bah, humbug. Well, play masquerade, and i'll describe the sequence to you later in massive spoiler tags. In the meantime, describe any sequence in any game that has really, really affected you.

No game has ever REALLY affected me per say, i guess the frightening elements have already been done to death in movies, so that when they get pput into a game, they're kinda predictable.
Im probably not playing the right games tho :)

System Shock 2 is probably the scariest experience of my life.

How sad :(.

If anyone here's enough of a gaming veteran to remember it, I have to say that the game "7th Guest" freaked me out. It wasn't an action game, or anything, but a puzzle/adventure game, with really odd, creepy settings. Apart from that, the Silent Hill scares me at times. Certain elements in the original Doom games unsettled me (later levels in Doom 2, where you go into Hell, to be specific. And the way Revenants screamed). Doom 3 also had its moments, particularly the stuff growing on the walls.
Alien Breed used to scare me a bit when I was young, too. Just, trying to escape a floor when the timer was ticking, and all the aliens pouring out of the walls at you.

silent hill 3 weirded me out a bit alright, particurly the latter parts like the alternate hospital

Damnit, am I the only one AWESOME enough to have played "The 7th Guest"???

HL1 and 2 were amazing.

What made HL1 really amazing was that I didn't beat it till what, last week? I kept playing through it thinking "WOW! This is better than most games out NOW!".

Mind you, i'd ALMOST beaten it before.

Alas, you're not. I played when it came out. A roommate of mine had it. Didn't that game come on 7 cd-roms?

Only the one, as far as I know. You're my new hero, though.

That puzzle where you had to spell out a sentence with those cans was a right bastard to do.

FFX is the only one that affected me really, you play the game for like 80 hours, and i think they built the characters nicely then you find out he's not real... ...excuse me, i need a moment :breaks down:

Cradle for me too. I haven't been able to complete it yet, though walking round there on 3 or 4 bars of health with no med kit things is an awfully tense and scary experiance

MGS and MGS2 left me full of emotion.
As far as scariness, Silent hill 1 takes the cake, the beginning is so amazingly good in that game, I mean the camera angels, the music, the sound effects.
And though a lot of people hate FF8, I like it, and especially a part when squall and rinoa are in space, they escape fro ma spacestation and are floating in space, trying to come to one another for the last time, tha was really romantic.

the guard dogs in Wolfenstein scared me when I was like 4, I'd go in a room and hide from them for like 30 minutes

Thief 3 definitely - not just the Cradle, but the ending, the Assassins and a load of other stuff.

MGS3 - The End battle was one of the scariest experiences in a game, ever.

Both Half-Lifes.

Broken Sword, near the end where Bruno

sacrifices himself! So sad. ;(

And this really brilliant little adventure game called The White Chamber, which you can download for free from http://www.studiotrophis.com/wc.php . It's quite short, but well worth playing.

yep the cradle and also widow moiras mansion in thief:ds had great atmosphere and spookiness....

think i might reinstall thief:ds actually...

That's it! I'm downloading System Shock II and playing it.

AVPII had moments - aliens and whatnot. I think the Predator levels were the creepiest though.

Doom 3 made me jump a lot. The first time.

I, too, am awesome! Scared the hell out of me, that did... never finished it, though, I lost the CD :(

Doom3 makes me jump, if I let it. I can play it quite happily if I don't think about it, but if I get into it it starts to scare me a little

I get scared easily.

So Ravenholm in HL2. When the Fast zombie just ran at you at the start. Me and my mate were playing and had sound up full so you could hear all the screams in the ambient soundscapes. I litterally just found a pipe to stand on and his from all the zombies for a good hour before running like hell into what I thought was a corridor, but ended up a dead end - then being maimed by lots of zombies :(.

I tend not to play Scary games. But Resident Evil 1 when you first meet the first zombie. That scared the hell out of me because the control system was weird and I couldn't escape.

Also Silent Hill 1 I only played for 5 minutes before getting scared.

Doom 3 I turned God-Mode on at the first zombie, for fear of being eaten alive.

So yeah.... I hate scary games.

Doom 3, stuff growing on walls + overhearing the unexpected deaths of coworkers.
Half-Life 1, the resonance cascade (my first feeling of "oh shiiiiiit")
System Shock
Tribes 1 + 2, best multiplayer experience of my life.

ICO!!!! The ending, with the beautifull music, so emotional, I loved everything about that game, probably one of my fondest gaming experiences ever.

Chalk me up on the "Awesome" list!

I played 7th Guest at a buddy's house a lot a while back.

Doom 3 scares me. Sounds like my PC's about to explode :(

Half-Life 1 and 2 scare me sometimes when a random headcrab jumps out in front of me or if I'm half asleep and a zombie makes a noise behind me...

think AVP was scary at first. the continuous bleeping of the motion detector, and as a blob came up you blasted away at moving pipes...yeah that had me going when it came out.

Thief 3 gets to me though. it really has a capturing atmosphere. i keep getting tense and holding my breath when a guard comes ridiculously close...and the cradle was just...*looks over shoulder*

HL2 in ravenholm when the fast zombies come when youre on the roof and waiting for the lift...that REALLY got my heart racing (not the gregori lift, the one just after you get the shotgun from him when he throws it across). its those haunting noises they make before they come..eek

The end of Unreal 2. I felt like crying, I thought 'they can't do this, this can't be happening!' But alas they did, and I was sad.

MGS, just, an awesome game.

System Shock 2 - I jump down from a railing, land on the ground. I kill a few baddies then recharge a battery. I make my way up to the railing, then go organize my inventory, use some meds. Then I hear "Runnnn! Runnn!" after a few seconds I hear "I'm sorry...". It took me a while to even figure out who was saying that, then I turn around to find a zombie taking a swing at me.

Also, I was amazed, I saw a zombie, and was protected from glass infront of me. The zombie runs off somewhere, I look around the area, talk with my stepdad then get out a psi ops when all of a sudden the same zombie pops up behind me and trys to take a swing at me.

Another name to put in your 'my heroes' list :p
I played it when my older brother got it. I was 7 then, I think. It freaked me out SOOOOO bad. But I continued playing :p
My favourite puzzle was the one where you had to open doors to let the blood creep through the maze juust right. And I also loved the cake in the kitchen.

Also :
Half-Life : When the resonance cascade happened and you got teleported to Xen, and suddenly you see this really creepy creature (Vortigaunt). I immediatly quit the game and cowered for the rest of the day :D
CS:S : Zombie mod : Not exactly scared, more like trying to get away from 'em while your adrenalin is pumping at max speed.
AVP also freaked me out. That marine demo... brr.
Doom 3 : Jumped the first 5 zombies. Then it was just a blasting game.
Also Return To Castle Wolfenstein, the levels underground with the zombies. I remember seeing a zombie coming at me in medieval armor. I go nuts and spray my entire clip on him. He deflected everything with his shield. Five seconds later I had to reload :(

Games that really affected me are:

The Resident Evil Series: Some of my most favourite games of all times, always seem to scare the living hell out of me no matter how many times i play them.

Half-Life Series: Some of the first games i got on pc, will treasure them for all eternity.

MGS Series: Loved 1 + 2m especially 2, still to play 3, heard a lot of good things about it though.

Any RPG : 2 simple words to describe my feelings for RPG'S, Fu***** Awesome.

Prolly the first two Thief games effected me the most. Especially Constantine's house with all the funky crap going on. DOOM of course got me into video games, good gosh, best moment is playing this song, fighting the CyberDemon Lord. Killing the last guy in episode 6 last level in Wolfenstein made me feel like i deserved a parade in honor of this (i was 7 years old at the time). Is Thief 3 really worth buying? I played the demo and was extremely dissapointed but i guess i really havent given the game a fair chance.

Follow Freeman made me feel really weird - cool. Don't know why...

Oh yeah. Zombie Master puts the fear of zombies into me.

The bit when you finish a mission in Cannon Fodder is very well done. Makes you realise what a waste it all it. (War that is, not Cannon Fodder) Its also something I haven't seen any game do since.

Although there was one bit in Brothers In Arms that was rather good. On the second mission just before you get on the Machine Gun to meet up with the people on Utah beach. You can look up and see all these allied planes flying over. Thats well done too.

Well...

Zombie Master: Trapped by Angry Lawyer's floaties with no ammo left. The only thing I could do was pick up the object and throw it to my team below, in the hope that some of them might benefit from my sacrifice. A few seconds later, they swarmed me and beat my poor body into bits.

The start of Brothers in Arms was really good as well, it completely threw me off balance and I liked it.

The Sims 2 when my elder sims died off thanks to old age. Sad, because I'd raised them from birth. Also sad because it means I've spent a loooong time playing :P

Oh, and CS:S. I was the last terrorist left on Dust 2. With no primary weapon or body armour, and only 40hp, I'd managed to sneak away from the massacre of my comrades. Despite our best efforts, 7 CTs were still alive.

Walking around the map carefully, I noticed a terrorist corpse and a nice AK for me to use. I picked it up, but I also exposed myself to 4 of the CT menace. I lost about 15hp, but that wasn't the real problem. The real problem was that now they all knew where I was. So I ran again. I jumped down the staircase, only to bump into a CT who looked just as surprised as I was. I shot him dead in a frenzy straight away, but unfortunately he wasn't alone. His friend ran round the corner, only to suffer the same fate.

I ran out of the large doorway and headed away again. One of the CTs had come to cut me off, but obviously wasn't ready yet. I shot him dead as well. Unfortunately, I was down to 12hp at this point, and I'd been slowed considerably. Those chasing me weren't far behind, as a few missed shots aimed at my back proved nicely. I shot behind the corner, and then into the doorway again. I hid, but it was obvious that they were all outside.

And then, the sound of a grenade being thrown, and it bouncing. Bouncing? It had bounced off the door! A quick moment later, and it had exploded, killing all of them. My heart was POUNDING for about an hour after that!

Lawyer <3 Shippi.

And Beerdude, that cake puzzle was a right bitch to complete, if I remember. Didn't you have to divide it so each slice had two graves, and a blank square? That took me ages to do. You get my love too.

And Amish, you get a little love, but you never owned the game :P

lmao, very nice, gripping, tense etc etc story there Kang.

The entire ending sequence of HL2, from about halfway through Follow Freeman to the end of Dark Energy immersed me like no other game ever has. I felt the same kind of rush that comes from the final pages of a book or the climax of a tense movie because I really cared about what was happening - it wasn't just the cheap adrenaline rush of a final boss.

Also, I know it's overused, but (FF7 Spoiler)
Aeris's death in Final Fantasy was beautifully tragic. And the boss fight afterwards with her theme playing in the background... genius.

Yeah. Back to Vampire.

I've got to get the pendant from the haunted house. I emerge from the sewers (the only way to get there), find the key, walk through the door. Spookey... the entire house is in darkness. To my right, a light flickers on, off, on, off. I walk to the table, where a newpaper lies. 'Ocean House hotel gutted in fire!' it is headlined. I read it, walk away - BOOM! Sudden damage, screen flashes red. I start.

It's a vase. I got hit by a vase.

I climb the steps, they break and dump me in a cellar. I wait for health to regen, i look around. I wander around the cellars for awhile, til i find the lift. Hmm, i need to activate the generator. Another newspaper! What's this say?

'Child's severed hand found in tumbler!!!!'

Somewhere in the depths of the basement, a tumbler starts turning...
