last time i check anything was when d3 came out and it looked like ati was getting pwned by nvidia...so whats the story with vcards and hl2? yo

IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE APPLICATION i think ... sorry for caps ... doom 3 = optimized for nvidia half life 2 = optimized for ati ...

I think this is the first ati vs nvidia thread there has ever been.

all of the new cards are very close in hl2 performance, except the xtpe, it breaks away at 1600x1200 full AF and AA

lol...yep definately the first

- i'm still not sure entirely...geforce cards are def. better addapted to openGL apps, but it does seem id are the only ones making those any more, and even they can't go on with those forever...so it seemed to me buying the raedons which are suited better to dx9 apps might be a better solution for the long run

i am getting my x800 pro tomorow! - *very exited*

i did read a good bechmarking article that showed a good comparison of the GF6800U, X800TX, & X800Pro, but it didn't show the GF6800GT, so i'm not sure how that one measured up...on most apps, the x800pro was just barely under the 6800U, and the x800xt was a good bit in front... unless the GT is even closer to the ultra than the x800pro, which isn't likely i think its the best bet out of the $400 level cards...

edit: found the benchmarks i read: http://www.nordichardware.com/reviews/graphiccard/2004/r420/
these kind of articles are pretty easy to find now, but this one was a little easier to understand than most i've read...hope that helps a little

Do not forget the the X800 pro IS the X800XT. If you overclock, you have equal speeds. And, though it voids your waranty, you can unlock the additional pipelines also.

Since you bring us to the topic of D3, 3Dcenter updated their take on Nvidia and ATI's performance in D3 here.
And I surely hope you don't assume D3's performance as the rule since it is far from normal.

Here is a very very recent review (Sept. 27, 2004) covering Sapphire's X800XT, which happens to be a lower clocked version of ATI's 500$ X800XT PE.

lol - damn you asus! :P - just when i thought i had decided once and for all which to go with you had to go and post that with the x800pro getting lowest scores in every single thing...even the hl2-vst!

...once again i am torn...

Well if it's any consoltation, they make no mention of ATI's AI feature in their new beta drivers. Plus you are buying into the architecture which is solid. Just check out 3Dmark2005. ;)
Besides... if you get an X800 Pro version that has Vivo, you can flash it to an X800XT PE. :O

Solid AA/AF performance and image quality, Temporal AA, 3Dc, plus monthly WHQL driver releases...it's your choice.

ya...i think i'm still going with the x800pro...heat and power are also a consideration for me, since i'm building all this into a fairly old metal case with not much ventilation...i also have only 1 agp slot on the new mb... i'm still a little hazy on this - do the 6800's actually require 2 agp slots?? or is that some other kind of slot they're talking about? i don't know that i've ever actually seen a mb with 2 agp slots, so i wouldn't think that would be a requirement... my new ps is 500w, so i guess it would push a 6800 just fine, but i'm still a little woried about the heat factor with this case...anyhow...any more input would be helpfull... i'm still planning on getting a card tomorow - the microcenter here has a few x800's in stock, i know for sure, so that'll probably be the one i'll go with...

The 6800Ultra's take up 2 expansion slots (not 2 agp slots) but it does cover up the PCI slot below the AGP.

The 6800GT is 1 slot like the X800pro, in reality either would be good. ;)

Exept the x800PRO has 12 pipes while the GT has 16. . . hence why the GT pretty well stomps its ass in alot of benches.

Im trying to make my decision also, between a x800 pro, and a geforce 6800 GT.

I read that ATI is better for HL2, and of course I find that very important.

Also, i read that the 6800 Gt is some sort of airplane graphic card: it's so loud.

I went for ATI since I'm definately gonna play HL2 and it's mods for the next couple of years. I need to get the most out of the HL2 graphics.
