Hi, i have an ATI 9800-SE, how do i softmod??

Thanks in advance! :imu:

well first you get the software, then you modify the clock rates. hence the 'soft mod'

theres some good OC software over at www.rage3d.com

just don't join the thousands of lesser noobs that go around saying they softmodded their 9800se to a 9800pro... you can change the clocks but you cant change the board architecture or component specs.

There's a difference between softmodding and OCing, though.
Softmodding involes activating dorment pipelines by use of third party drivers, while overclocking just.. well, overclocks.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I've never bothered to do it (or can), but, it's very specific on what cards you can do it to.

Awww

/me hugs badgy

To me it will always be a pro.

Yeah Shuzer you're right, soft mods can activate doorment architecture on cards that have the features on the GPU - but I meant even if you unlock the stuff, the card is still not kitted out to perform on the same level as the stock PRO's. For example, 9800se's and non-pro's do not come equipped with low-latency memory modules, where as all PRO models do. Same sort of thing with the board architecture, too. You can push a PRO a lot further using OC software, you just can't with a non-pro.

actually you can turn a 9800 se into a 9800np or pro by enabling the disabled pipelines. After enabling the pipelines you can either overclock to the rights speeds or hardmod it.

Softmod

Go to the softmod section and download the drivers and such and voila you got urself a nice new 9800np or pro

and this is one of those "lesser noobs" I was on about.

Run any '9800pro' softmodded OC'd 9500pro/9600pro/9800/9800np card in a benchmark alongside a 9800pro and you'll realise you can do all the mods and overclocks in the world, unless you get your soldering iron out and remove the majority of the board components and replace them with the pro components (memory especially) you just aint gonna get the same results.

thats why people have to pay more for the faster boards. Plus theres the benefit of pushing the 9800pro past its limits...

I get about 5600 in 3dMark03, thats a little less :)

Anyway, I got my card cheap, and I'm happy that it's worth more now :D

yes, this is what i plan on doing...i need the pipelines.

I ordered my pc yesterday online, and it should be here within 5 days.

2500+ AMD
ATI 9800-SE
XP home
512 MB RAM

If i softmod, i have a chance at running HL2 at a better framerate eh

p.s. Im a noob, so i need step by step insturctions
