Wooo free stuff! What are some good free games lads? Commercial games later released as free or games designed as freeware. Let's all be cheap together! No copyright infringement obviously.

First off I've made a pack of free horror/scary games. 2D and 3D. The first three games are 3D and, to varying degrees, randomised somewhat. The 2D ones are both Japanese made in RPG maker and more story driven.
  • Slender - You're dropped in a fenced-off area of forest and must find eight notes hidden randomly around the area. You are stalked by a creature called the Slender Man that you must avoid looking at it while escaping from it or die.
  • SCP - Containment Breach - You're in evil research laboratory for evil stuff when a creature breaks out. You must navigate randomly generated corridors and areas. You are stalked by the escaped creature called SCP-173 which only moves when you are not looking at it. As such you must avoid looking away from it while escaping from it or die. You can gather equipment to help you navigate and survive.
  • SCP-087-B - You must navigate a series of randomly generated corridors and staircases while...ugh...getting creeped out.
  • Ao Oni (roughly means Blue Troll) - Horror adventure. You and a group of friends visit a mansion that a monster supposedly lives in. You must solve classically obtuse adventure-game style puzzles while being chased by a giant blue man.
  • Ib - Like the above it's mostly puzzle based. The most story-driven game of the lot. You play a girl who goes to an art gallery with her parents but everyone disappears and you have no choice but to enter one of the exhibits. Then shit gets weird.

As for commercial games that are now free. Far Cry and Psi-Ops have both been released as ad-supported free games. 100% free as long as you don't mind ads in the loading screens. You also can't go wrong with TrackMania Nations Forever.

AoOni is actually a pretty damn creepy game. The low quality graphics and sound effects add a lot to that. Have yet to play Slender, but might do so whenever he begins upgrading it into more than the proof of concept.

Been playing a lot of Slender. Was going to post about it but I'm glad someone else did because I'm lazy. Nice list duder.

Ib is extremely good. It's got a whole Yume Nikki feel.

Oh, Tyrian is ****ing awesome. If you've never played it go play it now.

Started playing Ib and this is actually a really brilliant game. It's not scary (I don't think it's really possible to achieve scariness in RPG Maker), but it does have a strong atmosphere and everything feels like it ties together really neatly. The art style, the characters, even the puzzles feel consistent with the bizarre setting the game presents. Sat down with someone to play the other games in the pack and loaded it up as an afterthought, 3 hours later we're still trying to pick it apart while we should be sleeping. It's just super absorbing. This guy knows what I'm talking about.

Just discovered a program called Tiggit. It's a client for easily downloading free games with a catalogue of 349 games and some demos too. Haven't installed anything yet but it all looks pretty simple. Can't say I care much for the way they've set up categories. You have metroidvanias, roguelikes, point and clicks and other stuff all under "adventure". The catalogue includes Cave Story, Eversion, Yahtzee's point and click games and Bungie's Marathon games.
