some suggestions

OK, this site is great but it could have some extra features...

http://www.extremepixels.com/skins_vb.php

there are some skins, they cost 30 bucks each, im sure that the top admin could affor to buy 1 or 2 or all of them (maybe not all of them.) I like ambience.

If you look at these uber forums: www.gamingforums.com you will notice all the skins they have, its awesome.

I also propose a larger avatar size like in gamingforums (i think 200x200)

This feature is optional although it is handy, in gamingforums whenever you get a new PM a little pop up window appears telling you the subject who its from. You can choose to

1. read it*
2. cancel, (not read it yet)

* If you click ok to read it it then asks you if in the current window or if in a new one.

I think thats about it.

i think content is more important than looks.. by the way they just changed the whole site/forum layout and its nice the way it is.

As do I, smacky. Actually the current skin is almost too graphical for my taste but it's muted, loads fast and easy to look at so it doesn't matter. These fat-graphics skins just make me want to find whoever created them and throw a flamey-marked barrel at thier heads.

We won't be implementing any bought skins, there's just no need and we like the forums to match the style of the rest of the site. Also, in regards to the above quote about PMs, that's a default vB option, and it happens on here.

Dear god don't you dare suggest the avatar-size uppage!

(I'm at home for a bit :) )

nah. take too mcuh space. I could see 80x80 maybe, no more.

Heh heh no really!?!? Go to your control panel, it's an option. I've had it on for months. It doesn't work cause of my popup blocker but it lets me know it's there at least.

80x80 is a perfect size, not too big and not too small.. The way it is now, it's hard to make a decent avatar and making sure people see what the avatar is. Lower the avatar filesize to 6kb and up the pixelsize, I say.

ATI's right! Oh and add image code to signature, 1000x600 should be enough.

1. The skins are fine

2. This avatar size fits the forum setup/layout well. If the avatar/profile info was on the left a larger avatar size wouldn't affect the layout as much, but I don't see that changing anytime soon, so nah.

3. I've had that option on for as long as I can remember.

Personally I think the avatarsize is way to small. I like when the
avatars are big, like @ Unreal Playground. It's easier to recognize
users and it loads fast. It's a killer layout.

i like the forums, it feels compact to me. go to hl2fallout and i can barely make out the mesages amongst all the pictures, curved bits and sigs... avatar size and layout is fine imo.

HalfLife2.net forever!, this site rocks, the majority of people are friendly and I personally perfer this clean cut layout. The avatar size is fine for me and TY for no sig pics, i hate how some sites are where people have like a 5 inch post that only contains like one line of text because of all their sigs and junk that I don't want to see, I come for the reads not the usually stupid pics.

*DONT CHANGE*

We don't allow signature images either.

Thank god. Judging by ATi's sig link anyway :p. Its weird...on the NS forums, they allow animated sigs and avatars (of a respectable size), and almost everyone that uses them does so tastefully. But most forums Ive seen that allow them are an eye ****. Personally, my favorite thing here is the horizontal user panes. Ive never seen it on any other forums, but always thought it would be cool.

//speaking of tacky avatars, I still havent changed my temporary avatar for over a year :p

Can we have a x-mas feel to hl2.net please?
Its the 1st of December i have just put my tree up and all.

haha lol.

I doubt they will do it.

Now... for those of you who feel that this style woops the other's asses, well I say that you give the option to have a different one, totally different from these. Like the ones i said in my first post. Or at LEAST have the standard vbullletin skin. (The light blue one....)

You can still choose your style at the bottom of the main page with the "quick style chooser"

Also why don't we have a "users online" thing? I've never ever seen a forum without it? (A big forum) And considering that we are in one of the largest forums on the world wide web we should have that.

Bah humbug! **** ya Christmas! Or something.

And we did have the "Who's Online", but it was killing the server when it had to alphabetise 500 names every time it had to render a page.

^way up there^ Is totally right. This site rocks, and changing to some fancy graphical background would not only make it hard for people to read, but also completely ruin the HL2 look. Plus, if they really wanted to have some fancy graphical background for this site, they could most likely make one of their own, and wouldn't have to purchase a crappy one from the site you suggested. I rest my case

Well, they could just make the title at the top a little more Xmassy ... I little snow, perhaps?

We did that last year, Santa Gordon and Alyx the Elf... it was fun :D

I'd also like larger avatars. 100 x 100 would be cool. Images in the signature would be ok too. I understand some people are still using dial-up connections, but most sites that allow for larger avatars and image signature have an option where you can choose to not have them display for you. That makes everybody happy.

Yeah, god forbid you actually have to read to know who is posting.

Take away avatars. Too much bandwidth. A Kb saved is a Kb earned, right?

As for ATI4EVER, why would we need to see an obnoxious (although decently designed) banner telling us that HL2 pwns us? Oddly enough, considering my membership to an exclusively HL2 forum, I am already aware of this. Additional reinforcement: Not necessary.

Not gonna happen while I'm here, ever :p

It's got nothing to do with connection speed, but most people are here to read the posts, not spend ages scrolling through someones avatar and image sig just to see a 3 line post.

The layout and avatar size is fine the way it is :(

Forums with huge avatars and that allow you to add huge animated images in your sig space make me sick, they look so god damn stupid! :rolling:

80x80 avatars is a great size in my opinon, not too big and not to small. You could consider changing the forum layout to having the name and avatar etc to the left of the post itself aswell.

If there's one thing 50x50 avatars does do, it makes people put more effort into them instead of having crappy ones :) Anything up to 80x80 I would be happy with. Then again, this is a pointless discussion as they won't get changed anyway! If it ain't broke don't piss around it with it...
