I have received several emails over the past week stating that my account has been locked out and someone is trying to log into it. Is there anything I can do?! Why is this happening to me?

This is what the email said:
User Name,

Your account on Halflife2.net has been locked because someone has tried to log
into the account with the wrong password more than 5 times. You will be able to
attempt to log in again in another 15 minutes.

The person trying to log into your account had the following IP address:
66.144.5.25

Don't forget that the password is case sensitive. Forgotten your password? Use
the link below:
http://www.halflife2.net/forums/login.php?do=lostpw

All the best,
Halflife2.net team

Maybe it could be one of those scripts trying to post spoilers, but they somehow got the wrong login password and looped. Just a thought.

Wonder why someone would try and hack a forum account?

lol, some moron doesn't seem to have anything better to do than make a feverish attempt to hijack your account. I don't think there is much you can do except laugh in their face as they try to keep guessing your pass.

just make sure your password is very hard to work out.
Hmm...that's weird, The Dark Elf. You just edited your post. So...there is someone with that IP address here at halflife2.net?? :O

That is done! My password is nearly impossible to guess. :p

Sigh... its so obvious what his password is, its just that, "password"

The location of 66.144.5.25 is:
Country: United States
State: Ohio
City: Columbus
ISP: Woodland Data Center - "a known spam robot"

Some of it might be because the standard text for the login box is indeed 'User Name', so people may have been doing it by accident. Hate to say it, but you may have brought it on yourself :p

lol. But hey, just because you're paranoid doesnt mean they're not after you :O

Do a WHOIS look up on the ISP and contact his provider http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/whois.ch?ip=!NET-66-144-4-0-1&server=whois.arin.net Contact that e-mail address saying your take them to court if you allow there users to contiue to attempt to hack your account.

He'll be removed in a day or two, or he'll get a very harsh letter threatning him if he conitues blah blah..

Hah! I coulda figured it was something like that. :D

Is it possible that cookies could do something like this? Like, you go to a site and it downloads a cookie which keeps trying to post spoilers, but if you change your password and don't set it to stay logged in then it will keep trying to guess the wrong one?

Whois is fun to do :D

So this is supposed to be a spam robot? or is it actually a guy named Harry King?

No, the cookies can't "do" anything. The spoiler script read login data (not the actual username/pw, but probably the session hash) from the forum cookie and used it to post spoilers. It never logged in anywhere, it simply made the forum think it was logged in.

Anyway, the script issue has been fixed a while ago, so User Name's problem couldn't have been caused by it either way.

Well I always use password as my password, pure genis, no one ever hacks me. :rolling:
