I have no idea just what I'm doing wrong, but yeah, I totally suck at this mod.

DoTA as in the WarCraft 3: The Frozen Throne map right? It's really pretty simple, you just need to know what to get for the heroes and when do they peak in strength. Typically Int heroes dominate early-mid game while Strength and Agility rule late game. Denying experience (kill your own low HP creeps) and getting the last hit on enemy creeps (for $$) is important.

I'd recommend you go to their website and take a look at their forum guides, it should tell you everything you need to know. I haven't played DoTA in a while, been playing more regular melee ... but if you want you can add me on bnet azeroth: holywtf

The melee part is much bigger than the customs (although DoTA is absolutely huge now...)

The rules of DotA:

1. Dont get killed. It gives the enemy lots of experiece and puts you out of action, meaning that you will fall behind.

2. In relation to rule 1. Running away like a little girl is entirely acceptable.

3. Generally speaking ranged heros should go mid, while melee should go on the outside lanes.

4. To start with Int rule, at the end Str rule and Agi are good all the way through and tend to have a better mid game.

5. Use a Character that suits your style. Or, if playing AR or TR adapt your stlye to your char.

6. No matter your char, item build is king!

Well ranked melee (Quick Play or Play Game option) the custom's melee is rare.

Bob's points are all right, but I'd also add that never go boots first on any hero. Get either more stats or regen, cause that way it'll help you stay in your lane longer and hence more exp and chance for gold.

Warcraft III's Melee sucks. I only keep it installed for DotA, and I seem to have given it up for GuildWars. :(

DotA isn't all that hard to be good at. The main thing is to stay alive.
Keep tabs on the radar make sure you always know where the enemy heroes are, and if they're gone, retreat to a safe spot until they come out again.
Be good to your team and call when you notice someone has gone missing, even if it is just to heal.
Get to play all the heroes, it will take some time, but when you do you will have a good understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. Also, know the items and what they do and how they would compliment your hero's skills or abilities.

Try and creep deny to outlevel and outfarm your enemy! This can severly slow their game if you do a good job. Heroes with a fast attack like Razor are best at this, but it can be done with any of them.

I'd be willing to play some games with you but I'm going to be gone almost all week. Just hit my up on xfire if I'm on.

I hate DOTA, I didn't mind it when it first started to come out...but after it started to really grow and evolve. It just feels to slow of a game for me.
