i just wanna ask....can a computer with2.40ghz processor and 512 megabyte ram run half-life 2?:s

I would say yes, but what video card do you have installed?

NO WAY MAN! Why the hell would a recommended system be able to play HL2? That would be amazing if you could just open the menu!

omfg

Most likely... yes. It also depends on your video card.

Minimum System Requirements:

1.2 ghz Processor
256 mb RAM
DirectX 7 Level Graphics Card
4.5 gb HD space
Internet Connection

Of course, with the minimum requirements, Half-Life2 will be little more than a 640x480 Powerpoint presentation.

The recommended are:

2.4 ghz Processor
512 mb RAM
DirectX 9 level Graphics Card
4.5 gbs HD space

Going what on what you've already got, and assuming you've got a GeForce4 TI equivalent or better, you should be just fine even at 1024x768 pixels with probably 2x AA and other low level extras. If you've got a GeForce4 MX or lower, you WILL be able to run it, but you won't have any of the advanced goodies enabled. If, you are somehow running a PCI-E ATI x800 with those other mid-range specs, you should also be just fine at everything set to its highest.

Your graphics card is a lot more important than you seem to think.

"NO WAY MAN! Why the hell would a recommended system be able to play HL2? That would be amazing if you could just open the menu!"

Oh, I'm running an AMD 2200+ processor, a gig of ram, and an ATI Radeon 9600 with 256 mb of ram (and its also the shittiest card that falls under that criteria... not even an onboard fan), and I run HL2 fine at 1024x768 pixels, 2x AA, full water effects, 2 AF (i think), and all high detail models and textures and my framerates are FINE (at least for singleplayer). Although... the load times are quite lengthy.

ok, I'm sick of this.

I have an AMD Athon XP 2000+ (1.6 Ghz)
512 PC2100 Ram
GeForce FX 5200

and I run the game at medium quality at 800x600 with 4x anti-aliasing on and i still get around 25 fps. So all of you people whining about "Oh waaaah I only get 40 or 60 fps with my 500GHz 3G of ram system wo is me!" can shut it. Stop whining.

This is known as sarcasm.

If you're not using any VGA card in the GeForce FX family then you should be fine with HL2 :D

I have 2.4GHz and 512 MB RAM, and yes you will be able to run Half-Life 2 as long as your graphics card is good enough. I have the same as Pai-Mei, Radeon 9600 (256MB) and am able to run it fine. Just don't put settings up too high.

Well I ran it on my old computer and got 20FPS on minimum detail @ 1024x768

The spec:
850Mhz Athlon
128Mb PC100
XP Pro (^and that ram, means its bloody slow^)
Geforce 2 mx400 32Mb
10Gb HD

Of cource, now on my A64 3500, 1Gb PC3200, 6800GT system, I can run everything at full whack wit hover 100FPS :afro:

Nice one

Quick question...

how does one measure the Frame rate in game, so as to diagnose what settings are working out the best. The only thing i can do is just see if it give me a headache after 10mins.

On the menu, there is an option that says: "Video Stress Test". Click on that with the settings you want and when it's done it tells your average frames/second. I've got no idea how to do it while in-game though.

Go to options, keyboard, advanced, turn on the console, hit the button to the left of 1, and type cl_showfps 2.

Yeah true, but onces you pass 20 or so, it makes no difference to the human eye, you know that. So only to an extent is that true. Anyway have you even got Halflife 2 to run on your pc yet RJMC?

My AMD 64 only gets 75 - 100FPS on Max detail HELP PLZ :P...Seriously these threads are boring now, I wish people could read.

Wrong.

The human eye can perceive more than 200 fps, and, if theoretical hypothesis are correct, we take in light in a constant stream and there is no "frame rate".

Although 60fps is all I ever needed. 20, you can notice a huge drop of performance.

Damn... want to experience HL2 on MAX settings with a FPS of 60. too bad, im stuck at semi-high settings with FPS of... 10-40.
