Under the job listings there are positions available for "writers." Maybe this is an unnecessary concern, but I hope the HL storyline doesn't become muddled with different creative influences coming into play. This also affirms Valve's plans for a lot of episodic content. But, I suppose, as long as Marc LaidLaw is the Senior Writer it can only be a good thing.

I think they might mean for places like technical writers, instruction guides, manuals, etc..

Applies to Valve...
HAHA, now the Combine WERE on Xen HAHAHAHAHAH!

NNNNNooooOOOooOOooOO!

Actually, if I lived over in the 'States, I'd probably apply. Writing was just behind lawyering and coding in my list of possible career paths.

I know, writing coming in a poor third. I'm not angry, I'm just dissapointed. ;)

Cough....Gearbox expanisons...cough

But I like the idea of different creative influences. The main storyline is too vague.

Hmm, very interesting. Pity it'll probably be for the sort of technical specifications that I possess next to no knowledge of :x

If I was in the US, I'd apply so fast it'd make your head spin. And get rejected just as fast. But still...

AJ, your sig should read
The combine weren't on Xen alright, it's a widely believed FACT!

Why? It's true.
But that would ruin the joke. And it is a joke. And if anyone else takes my signature serious, I will stick their head through the window!

Yes, it is rather obvious. A "Widely believed fact" anyone? :p

For all deliberate purposes, it's supposed to be that way. To a degree, anyway. HL2 did clear a lot of the vagueness up, and it seems we are going to learn a lot more in Aftermath. And for the record, I don't like the idea of other creative influences. Maybe two writers, but no more, after that it gets muddled. But they may be used to write dialog under the pre-set conditions of the overall story arc, hopefully still controlled by LaidLaw. In some ways having other creative influences is a good thing, they can come up with plot twists, characters, that the main writer wouldn't be able to do on his own. I just hope the EPs stay true to the storyline.

Maybe they want writers for a completely new game/franchise??

Now that would tickle my fancy...
Think a different story, but with the Valve style community love :bounce:

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but it's entirely possible that Valve is starting a new franchise like Cunni suggested. And it seems the more realistic reason, anyway. With Source and Steam in full motion, this would be an ideal time to crank out a new IP, or atleast start one. Just hope it stays within the scifi/shooter category, maybe that's too narrow-minded.

The thing is, I might be wrong, but from what LaidLaw said HL wasn't created with a trilogy, or elongated franchise in mind. If there are going to be as many episodes as Valve suggests (every three months?), I believe HL3 will be the last of the series. A new IP would allow Valve to make a more intricate, subtle story. They can create the puzzle of the story, pre-planning a trilogy instead of trying to jam the pieces together. Much like Bioware's Mass Effect of the Xbox 360. Well, I hope this is true, although it is still possible they are hiring all these extra people (not just the writers, mind you) so that they can work on the Episodes while the core team concentrates on HL3.

The HL2 story is a marketting tool, at best.

Well, the original HL was such an overwhelming success (obviously) they were almost forced to make a sequel. So, I think the fact that it is a marketting tool is fairly obvious. The narrative approach is terrific, but the story itself wasn't crafted for a long life-span, not to begin with anyway. Maybe with all the new creative influences at Valve, the HL universe might get more fleshed-out, but somehow I doubt it.

Yeah, they could call it ragdoll kung-foo!

Has anyone noticed they took Viktor Antonov off of their staff page thing.
;(

Viktor Antonov = Art Director. He was one of the main reasons why Eastern Europe was chosen as the setting for HL2.
