"Sony has apologised for an advertising campaign for its PlayStation games console which depicted a young man wearing a crown of thorns and the slogan “Ten years of passion”.

The advert, to mark PlayStation’s tenth anniversary, was pulled after the software giant was hit with scores of complaints from Italian Catholics within hours of it appearing in Italian newspapers and magazines.

“This time they’ve gone too far,” said Antonio Sciortino, editor of Famiglia Cristiana (Christian Family), a mass-circulation Catholic weekly."

whatsamatta for a you? no sense of da humour?

"Italian Cardinal Ersilio Tonini, among the first to speak out, denounced the ad as “an irreverent mockery”.

“The advert displays a lack of taste which conceals a lack of respect. Kids shouldn’t be induced into believing that the passion of Christ is a game,” he said"

wtf? do people honestly believe gamers are really that stupid? ...excuse me, i hear jesus speaking to me from the back of my computer ..I must go pray

That's my one complaint about religion: offensiveness. I mean, c'mon... can you not take a joke? Goddamn.

Lets get some pictures of dead liberals for a new Postal game ASAP!

That's so rediculous. I'm going to go complain to every church I see with a bilboard up on my way to work/home. ITS OFFENSIVE.

Go to hell orginized crybaby religion.

you barely concealed your outrage that time raziaar

meh, I wouldnt care ...actually I'd play it cuz you know they'd have to throw in right wingers for balance ...be fun taking hedge clippers to the side of their heads. See this is what parody is all about

I wish someone would make a Monty Python's Holy Grail game ...I'd love to chuck a Holy handgrenade at someone:

"'O Lord, bless this Thy hand grenade that, with it, Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits in Thy mercy.' And the Lord did grin, and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals and fruit bats and large chu--

...And the Lord spake, saying, 'First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to three. No more. No less. Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then, lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.'

Man, so stupid. I really just wish people would learn to take a joke. The world would be a better place if people would just lighten up...

I'm a sorta-Christian. Jesus is metal enough to enjoy Playstation. I don't find the advert offensive.

Well, obviously they're not as metal as I am.
But I think you'll find that the viewpoint is grounded in stupidity, rather than Christianity. It's just the stupid seem to be attracted to Christianity.

Sheesh, i'm a Catholic and i don't care about this kinda thing, it is just advertisement, no probs with that in my book.

Angry Lawyer more metal than Short Recoil??

If you read the unedited Bible, you'll see it's not God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, but God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and Short Recoil.

I'd sig that but I dont want my pm's flooded with people saying

"you made baby jesus cry"

"blasphemer, god curses you to a thousand lifetimes of hell"

"repent sinner for you will find mercy in the lord jesus christ"

god I really need to get away for awhile ...all this religion is making me go crazy

Stupid to take offense at? Yeah.
But is it in bad taste? Definitely.

Organised Religion is a laugh and a half!

I'm bemused by a lot of the replies here:

They have just cause to be offended.. it's a belittlement of their beliefs. Very bad taste in my opinion.

Have a little respect for other people's beliefs, ways of life and values, ta.

...

it's the same thing as when John Lennon said "We're bigger than jesus" ...people took it out of context and made it into something it wasnt

it's not like they intentionally said something offensive ..they just used powerful imagery ..which is what good advertising is all about

It is essentially making light of a core belief of theirs. As far as I'm concerned, it's perfectly fine to take offence.

it's not making light ...I dont see how it's making fun of christianity

It's not like anyone has a problem with people getting offended. Lots of people get offended, that's human nature, it's fine, we deal with it.

But when it starts to interfere with the rights of others, I can't stand it. Moral highgrounds are the bane of us all.

They aren't moralising.. they aren't infringing on the rights of others...

who? sony or the chrisitians ..I'm a little lost

The PR department must of been stupid if they thought that that advert wouldn't get complaints and be controversial.

....or that was their intention

I'm fine with Christians getting offended by that ad, but I'm not fine with them complaining so much that Sony has to take down the ad and apologise.

Yeah, i suppose it must of been a striking and eye catching advert with people...but i would of atleast proof my work, if i do think it's touchy, with someone who might find it offences. I'm sure they could of gone up to a local priest and show them some demoes and ask their opinions on it. It just seems to be Sony's fault and the Catholics were just defending their faith after being offended by the advert.

If you see a picture that is making a joke or a mockery for someone you believe in and adore and follow and idolise a great deal, you would be offended.

Precisely.

So that should discourage anyone from being creative or speaking freely. I admit it may or may not be wise business methods, but I'd sure be upset if everyone was scared to make a comment about people who smoke, or have afros, or listen to Country music. Yah, let's brand all these companies with an I for Insensitive because they dove in uncharted waters.

Exactly :)

Now imagine Stern that someone you love and idolised was put in an advert that you sort was offensive to them, would you make a complaint?

Well if you take your work up to someone with an Afro and they laugh, then fine no problem. But there is having a joke and then there is going too far. There was one car company in Britain that was inundated with complaints after running an ad that made a mockery of people with ginger hair.

im christian and i dont take offense, but i can see why people wouldnt appreciate the betlittlement of their holiest icon. kind of like me curb-stomping chomsky. besides, making light of ANYBODYs torture and subsequent death isnt REALLY funny.

And there is where the exxageration occurs. The ad had NOTHING TO DO with the torture and subsequent death of anybody.

What about all those Family Guy episodes? I watch a lot of it and see MUCH worse things on it than some innocent ad for a video game.

eh, and i'd tend to agree with you. just saying that its not fair to mock people, then mock them again for being insulted.
