Sony's E3 2006 conference (embarrassing)

The reason why Sony was picked out in this case is because they made it so obvious. I remember watching the conference the day it was available on the net, and I noticed a lot of it myself.

I still don't like how a botched presentation is used as an indicator in this video that people shouldn't buy PS3s.

Thats not the fault of the video makers.

What? Did you watch the end of the video?

Did you read the words you quoted? Do you know what the word BASED means? I repeat, developers are allowed to put new elements into a game, be it completely fictional or impossible, that's what makes it fun. BASED means the basic idea, setting, etc. or any combination is the premise of the event.

Let me give you an example... If I made a game where London was infested with zombies, I could say the game is based in London. No, it doesn't mean London actually has zombies in real life, but the game is BASED in London, so you can expect elements of london in the freaking game.

That's not true at all. You would say the game takes place in London. I don't see how fighting a giant crab has any historical link to anything. I am not sure of any battle in Japan that involved giant crabs. Mind explaining that for me?

*facepalms* You seriously don't need to keep telling me there weren't giant crabs in any historical battle. But apparantly I need to keep explaining to you what the word 'based' means.

Fine Glirk, perhaps it was a bad example, even though I could still say it's based in London. Yes you might better say "takes place", but it really doesn't matter.

Say there's a game that is WW2 but with lasers. The game is BASED on WW2. A person told this could expect many elements of WW2, except with lasers. That's the point of the word. It doesn't mean there were lasers in WW2. Who would waste time saying "it's a game where america and britain and other countries joined together to be the "allies" and germany japan formed together to be the "axis" and they fought in the 1940s with 1940s era tanks and airplanes and weapons but they also have lasers."
How about just say "it's a game based on WW2, but with lasers"

'Based' is not the same thing as 'recreation'. Go look it up in a dictionary. It's the underlying concept. WW2 is the underlying concept, lasers are the twist or creative element. WW2 is just the BASE of the game. Not ALL of it.

If you still don't understand this, I give up. Can I please get some backup from someone else. Apparantly Kyo is not enough.

Replace "100-man army" with "giant enemy crab" and that, my friend, is how you create a fictional battle based on a real event.

So just because they introduce fictional elements, there is NO history? Where does it poof away to? Please reread my TWO posts and example until you get it.

I think your examining too much on "based" word. In any case, when Sony said that, they we're fairly vague and didn't elaborate much. Lets say:

"Genji 2 is an action game that is based on Japanese history, with some fictional elements. Being based somewhat on history, certain stages of the game will also be based on famous battles which actually took place in ancient Japan. As for one of the fictional elements, here's this giant enemy crab..."

I don't think the reason for Sony's demise is the broken promises that were promised in this convention. It was mainly the reason for it being very difficult to code for and it having absolutely no games, well... it does have Talladega Nights GOTY edition. :p

Except that just sounds stupid...

The only reason people seem to think the crab is funny because of the way the video is edited to be like "based on actual battles" *cut* "so here we have a giant enemy crab" and because it's meant to be a funny video, people default to the funniest possible idea.

In order for the game to be based on actual historical events it would need...well historical events. A giant crab is not historical. You would need real life events to make it based on real life events. A giant crab battle was never real and therefor it couldn't be based on historical events since it never existed.

Holy shit Glirk. You're a broken record.

Nobody SAID the crab part of the game was the part based on history.

The location, weapons, soldiers, and more elements (I'm not sure what else because I don't know much about the game) ARE historic elements. At the game's core it's the historic battle. Just because it has fictional elements thrown in doesn't mean they completely nullify the premise. The GAME is based on history. The CRAB is not. The crab is the FICTIONAL ELEMENT PUT ON TO THE BASE THAT IS THE HISTORY.

You seem to have completely ignored this post: http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showpost.php?p=2511922&postcount=48 because it should be enough to settle this ridiculous argument. Please tell me how that post is wrong in every way (or even just tell me what's wrong with the example) and I'll give up.

I agree, simply because I am so awesome.

After The Fact Disclaimer: You should have ignored my above comment.

Your not making sense anymore. Did you even see what they said in the video?

The stages of the game will also be based on famous battles which actually took place in ancient japan

I don't know why you argued semantics but a giant crab is still not real. I don't know how I can explain it any other way for you.

I tend to throw in the towel when the person I'm trying to argue against is thicker than a *stobie pole.

Sigh. Yes the battles in the game can be based on actual battles that happened in Japan. So they could be using the same environment, same circumstances (faction v faction), same outcome, same weather, same length of battle, etc Do you see what I mean? Yes it's based on actual battle but that does not mean there had to be any giant crab in the real battle. Sheesh.

This thread is stupid for several reasons;

1. It's now 2008.
2. We've all seen these types of videos before.
3. Who the **** cares any more about what Sony said in 2006? By extension that's like caring about statements made by other people which by today's standards are outright funny or just plain false. It's funny a few times and then just plain boring.

* A Stobie pole is a power line pole made of two steel joists held apart by a slab of concrete in the middle.

Then it's false advertising. If your going to claim that your basing the battles on real events and you throw in giant crab battles that takes the historic feel out of the game. That's false advertising. You don't promote a product by saying that it's based on historic events and turn around and only make the game very loosely based on historic events. When you promote a product in that way people have an expectation and may want to "re live" those historic battles. However, in the video it didn't look like a samurai army facing off against another army, it looked like a guy with a giant pole smashing up a giant crab. What year did that take place?

There is no false advertising. This was a presentation at a games expo, not an ad on T.V. Expectations are also commonly killed off in just about every game these days.

Because Gabe told me to. :p

Honestly...a game expo is probably more important. That is when the world gets their first impression of the game. It still doesn't excuse the whole real events/giant enemy crab. Hehe, I still laugh every time I think about that.
