but does steam prevent or promote piracy?

if it prevents, how does it function to do so?

prevent, complex stuff.

Checking keys and so forth.

Its a much bigger bitch to crack steam games, but it can be done, or at least it has, the steam updates kinda force people to download new cracked copies over and over again, and most people couldnt be bothered with it, so by comparison i think there are less people playing cracked steam games, but its still possible... theres nothing better at the moment anyway.

As for the preloads etc, The files inside are encrypted quite nicely, im sure they will be cracked, Most of that content would be on the net after release anyway, so steam certainly doesnt make it easier, but its still gonna be there, it always will.

In the end, its a better system than we have seen in games before, but i doubt any game will be perfectly uncrackable.

as Lobster pointed out, Valve's capability (thanks to Steam ;) ) of being able to release an update on Steam at whim makes piracy and online hacking/cheating harder than it was with the WON network.

might wanna visit Steam's website in particular their forums for a more informed opinion on Steam :)

edit: fluke i don't think Lobster or myself for that matter dispute that Steam will stop piracy altogether.. infact anyone who thinks that is naive.

but as pointed out, it will make it tougher for pple to warez it and cheat in MP

History has shown us that this is impossible.

And pirates do even find ways of playing these games online, although the manner is generally very limited; such as they can only play on cracked servers which probably cannot be listed within the game, and updates make things very messy for that community.

Anyone who pirates steam games will be going through far more trouble then its worth, for what is definitly an inferior experience.
