...the answer is really really urgent...

i already posted this in the hardware section, but noone seems to be reading the posts over there, so please, answer and close the thread.

i was wondering if windows 98 SE (don't know if the SE but matters) supports 1024 RAM..

EDIT- that, and do i need to format my disc in order to install a new motherboard?? (been a long time since my last upgrade)

well, i surely don't know... my dad says it won't recognize the extra 512 RAM, but we're all nothing but a bunch of noobs, so i was wondering if some of you hardware wizes could lend me a hand

yes it does dude! windows operating systems don't count on how much ram you put on your pc.. the more ram you have the faster your pc run's.

hmm, ok, and what about my second question? about the motherboard and the disc formatting?

Older versions of Windows does infact have problems with very large amounts of memory or HDD space. Your best at a bare minimum using Win2k SP4. Or WinXP if you've absolutely no other choice, or have to choose between WinXP and WinME :)

As for the motherboard thing. If you change that its usually a good idea to install windows from scratch. You don't _have_ to, but its recommended to avoid problems down the line.

motherboard and the disc formatting??? i don't see no question about it... :p

ok thanks, not good enought for him (my dad) thought...hopefully the nice men from the store will tell him it is needed ;)

EDIT- either that or my pc goes berserk without a new windows installation, wich would be as good

thank's y'all. been really helpfull... what irritates me the most is that i'm the one that's goind to pay for the full upgrade, and i don't even get to choose what i buy!!

windows 98 sees the 1024 mb of ram, but it won't be able to use it at all. Only 512mb.

an upgrade like this is the perfect time to go to XP. i waited a long time to go from 98 to XP myself, i thought 98se was as good as it gets.. wrong. 98 is FULL of security holes, not it's mention really built on code from 1995!! you will see improvments in all areas trust me.. also a clean install with a new mobo and empty drive would be a great start, dont forget an antivirius/firewall. your memory issues wont matter either.
there are so many reasons NOT to use 98 i really cant list them, just trust me DO IT.

yah, well, unfortonately my father features the possibilitie to boss me around.. he says no XP, no Xp it is

What's his reasoning behind it? I don't see why he would have anything against XP...
If you are spending the $$$, just get XP.

beats me... he say's he doesn't want any trouble... he think's he has something agaisnt microsof latest OS.. althought, if we had 2000, that we would install for sure.. but i think he worries too much, ah well, someday 1024 RAM will really be necessary, then he will have to give up for m$'s might and buy XP..
