Hi
Me and my mate (who's registered here as N. P. C.) have had the idea of making a simple chess game with the Source engine. He is the one interested in mapping, and all aspects of modding in general, and I am the one tagging along for the ride - I'll be the one making the coffee. I am seeing this a fun project in which the focus is on learning, rather than fame, fortune, loot and hot chix. As such, it won't be a vast conversion. We really want to make it HL2 based (we've come up with who we want in the set). Rebels vs. Combines. All we really need is a coder, and I think parts of this mod will be quite tough to code. If you are up for it, please post here or PM me.

I suppose I could be the website dude, and do some sound effects and tunes.

A few details/features we'd like to implement:

Multiplayer - finally a source game you can play on separate continents. There would be no need for dedicated servers, each person could create their own. We're still thinking about spectatorship.

Board - N.P.C. will design and make this as a map in Hammer

Characters - We think we've made some good choices, we'll let you find out if the mod takes off ;)

Cheers,
Dink

p.s. I'm pretty awful at actually playing chess. I play it as a game of chance.

That is a great idea, like battle chess with HL2 characters.

sounds fun but you could also make it that 1 is the controller and some other players the pieces (Except pions otherwise you need to much players) but that would be boring :P

Do you realise how much code would need to be implemented for this to work?

Lawyer is right. There would be such extensive coding to do this. Might be easier to turn the Source engine into a RTS game. :)

that, i think is the point of it...i congratulate on seeking knowlegde, instead of chicks, power, and whatever else you said. :cheers:

However, doing Chess in a quake-esque game IS possible, as proven by "Quess" - chess for Quake 1.

And RTS games on Source are much easier. I'm doing the code for my own as we speak.

I am aware of the amount of coding it would require, and if my circumstances were slightly different I wouldn't hesitate to pick up a book and start learning C++ However I am going to Uni in August and that is part of the Syllabus so I'd rather not learn until then for fear of confusing myself and picking up bad habits.

Quite well, actually. Last night, I had a breakthrough with ranged weapons on the NPCs, and now implementing half of the troops has become one hell of a lot easier. Expect some sort of release pretty soon.

Well you see I liked the idea of the pieces taking other pieces in their almost stereotypical way for instance Freeman (The Rebel King in our game) would take other pieces by tw*ting them with his crowbar

The Pieces So Far:

Rebel Side

King = Dr. Gordon Freeman
Queen = Alyx Vance
Rook = Dr. Eli Vance
Bishop = Dr. Isaac Kleiner
Knight = Lamarr
Pawn = Anonymous Rebel Soldier

can i map for it?
We might take you up on that offer :)
I'll try and register a freebie forum and get a quick site up and running and then send you some more info
