So, Source Designs is an idea I've been thinking about for a while now but I've decided to do something about it now. My plan is to create a site of portfolios for work on the Source engine, completely free of charge.

Basically, for anyone who's interested, you'll be given a small amount of webspace (I'm not entirely sure how much as of yet) where you can build your site to include any or all of your work as long as the site contains work based on Source development. The only think I ask of you is that you sign up to the forums and include a link somewhere to the forums and to the main page of the site.

To begin with I'd like offer ad-free hosting but since this is being paid for by myself if the site gets to a certain popularity I may have to place a small ad or, preferebly, accept donations.

At the moment I've not really decided on the full details of how everything will work but I thought sharing the idea will hopefully get a few questions from people who might be interested in the idea, including helping me out.

So...thoughts? Suggestions? Questions?

Thanks.

I would have thought that it would be limiting people's portfolios somewhat.

Yeah, I guess I should've been clearer.

I don't think the work would be strictly limited to something 'built' on the Source engine. The idea is hosting so people can build a site including their work to show for mod applications or a showcase.

I guess for some people (concept artists or modellers for example) it's difficult to say it's 'Source Development', but I don't plan on posting this on any other game modding community sites so hopefully that's not a problem.

I actually forgot to mention one of the original ideas I had was to post guides or tutorials on modding as well, and hopefully get a community together.

whats happening to irrelevant development?

I don't plan on keeping the name anymore but like I said above I'd like to have guides for modding etc. on Source Designs too.

isnt that like moddb.com half-life 2 mods section? Or am i missing the point :S

Doesn't moddb offer hosting for mods? This is hosting for people to collect their work together for whatever reason.

Having said that...if Angry Lawyer is still interested the offer still stands!

I really like the concept, actually. With a standard tutorial site, you're pretty much in a flooded market. The idea of a Portfolio site, however, hasn't really been done. Plus, I can use it to stealorize web-space for CC17 D: D: D:

Stick the tutorials into their owner's portfolios, and have a "tutorial" category on the main page that can easily find them.

Mission Statement: To create a community-run, practice-driven website for serious modders which will provide an ideal environment to learn and improve upon modding skills by way of incentives that reward hard work just as much as useful feedback and advice

I'm one of the members of a small design team that have been working on the plan for such an idea for a few months, Gonzo, so if you're interested please contact us. All of the planned features revolve around that mission statement, so you may be able to imagine some of the concepts we have in mind. Version 1.0 of the design document is available for public viewing in the "Design Plans and Progress" section of the forums. I use the word 'viewing' and not 'review' or 'scrutiny' because a hell of a lot has been added to and expanded on from that document. I'm currently writing up version 2.0 of the design doc which currently weighs in at around 3,500 words (as opposed to the 629 in the original). When finished (it will probably be between 4,500 and 5,000 words) I'd like to open it up to public discussion if the other members of the team agree.

It's looking like being quite a big project, so we're going to be concentrating on one engine for the time-being (to be decided between Source and UT2K7). That means incremental tutorials and general community support for that one engine in the first build. If you're interested in helping out or being added to a mailing list for further information then post on our temporary forums, or PM/email me from my forum profile.

I'll post more news when version 2.0 of the design document is finished.

[Edit] To make sure I don't get accused of making the thread all about me :upstare:, if Gonzo wants me to edit out this and send it to him as a PM, that's his perogative and I'll gladly comply. I just thought he (and others?) might be interested in knowing that there's a similar project in pre-production development.

Sounds like an interesting idea. Let me know when the new version of the design document's done and I'll have a read through.

I bought the domain name earlier anyway. If anyone is interested feel free to PM me and I'll see if I can sort something, I'll have a think about the site and some possible features if I go ahead with the idea. So if anyone has any thoughts let me know.

I'll set up a forum now @ http://www.source-designs.co.uk/forum/

ill sign-up :D hope to see others sign up aswell * looks at crackhead *

i dont understand what it is. and i miss irrelevant development!

EDIT: Damn, you beat me to it.

What don't you understand? Source designs is basically gonna a collection of portfolios, and it's gonna include tutorials and guides as well.

There's not much I can do about that. It'll be an issue with the address you used to sign up or an issue with phpbb, which is unlikely
