Do you think it's possible to make a "lord of the rings" style game with hundreds of people playing online? Seriously, that would be so cool if you had huge naval battles with huge ships that are deformable, and land battles with hundreds of people storming castles and such?

Please post if you have better ideas..:afro:

I doubt HL2 will support more than 64 players, probably only 32.

no to the 100's of ppl playin on one server. not yet anyway :) but it would be possible to create a LOTRs mod. would be ****in cool 2 tbh :) stormin castles, shootin orks in the head with my bow and arrow... ahhh the possiblities

P.S- Changeable armor and a $h!Tload of weapons....ooo yeah :afro:

I'm sure it is entirely possible, it's more a question of how easy it would be to do.

Valve said there would be a limit on the number of players set to 32

BUT that this number is going to be changeable by mods. Which means yes it could be possible maybe

Gabe actualy said that they havent yet tested how high the limit could actualy go.

So as far as we know anythings possible :)

100's i don't think will be relaly feasible in hl2. and space mods? sounds dumb to me. but i like the idea of storming a castle.. or lke the batteflieds mod with 64 people.

but maybe not ships and things just one huge huge huge field with a castle at the end, and a ton of archers raining down on you as ya rush.

then you could have ladders for breaching the wall, and the list goes on.

yes but for an epic like LOTR

the second movie had 10,000 Uraki (spelling?) the third movie will have a besieging army 200,000 strong...

200k

it will be impossible to emulate that in hl2 with our current hardware ;)

I think I have heard on the VERC, and some other HL2 sites, that it's possible to actually distribute the processing/net load over several servers and therefore actually create something like a MMORPG. The Valve team at least seem to be expecting everything from 1st person RPGs to Aircraft simulations with their engine. I hope that their confidence is well founded.
:)

Consider the delay of your own processor doing a calculation versus the delay of your computer telling another to do something, doing it, then sending the results to your computer. I think that's a pretty far-fetched idea unless you have one hell of a fast connection between computers.

I don't understand what you're saying. Maybe I didn't make myself clear. The only difference is instead of having 1 32 player server, and the clients. The clients connect to a large group of servers which distribute the demand between themselves. Like I said, I only THINK I heard this on VERC, but I don't think it's that far fetched...

Toast: You mean you have never heard of a server cluster?

Some variation of a server cluster system is the only way that any MMORPG could support a load of thousands of people in the same game world on today's hardware... without the developers having to buy a supercomputer.

I have heard of a server cluster, but I thought he was talking about multiple game clients, like let's say you and I were playing together. I thought he meant that the two of us could share the wordload, which I don't think would be able to happen because of the lag between us.

Guess I missed where he said 'several servers'. Sorry for my mix up.
