Some pretty funny movies have been made in the past useing the Half-Life 1 engine for counter-strike. Now with useing XSI and the lip sync is it feasable to belive that people will make movies with it? Not like theater productions or anything but like a TV-Internet series? After watching the tutorial on rigging charecters and such it seemed like editing what a charecter will do and scripting sequences will be very easy to do with source.

Would you watch a series or a movie made with the Source Engine? What types of things would you expect? What would you want to see?

I want an action movie, with physics like blowing stuff up!

I am talking EXTREME physics, cuz it won't be real time and it wont like crash if you have alot of physics.

I would watch one, depending if it's good or not. Well.. as long as it has physics... ;)

You should ask Pendragon about it. I believe he is going to try doing some machinima with it.

If you watch the e3 2k4 vid of counter-strike you see him load it up via 'playdemo @@@@' (whatever the hell it was called) so that was an actual demo but take note of all the extra tricks they did with it:

1.Camara dollying - moving rotating,
2.From thirdperson to firstperson,
3.Zooming in,

Those were the kinda effects you got back in Quake1-2 (with a little help from the clever modders) and I'll praise Valve forever if they make them simple to do again! :)

Machinima = pwn

mmmmm Machinima

Yes, I remember hearing somewhere that the demo's have greatly enhanced features, you can go back in and do all sorts of great stuff after you take it.

I remember when HL2 was first picking up us speed last summer and they did all the interviews, etc. Thye had mentioned that the tools they are incorporating with HL2 would make it super easy for Machinema, especially, because you could input your scripts as text files and wavs and the tools do the facial and movement animations for you. You could probably also have the zooming effect from the first set of videos as well.

I would watch such a series/movie for sure ! I have been thinking similar ideas for a very long time when playing games like H-L. I would love to see an action-packed movie/series based on the Source enginge - since it's got e-thing you need to make one. Or why not just a cool, like every day drama, divided over three or four episodes ? I mean, I bought "Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within", just 'cause it was computer animated.

EDIT ----> Are there any such videos with the H-L or other engine to download somewhere ?
(You know, I think that you actually could pull off a MacGyver episode with Source...) :E

I think I read the same interview as SSJ4Vegita2002 which I thought was veeeeery interesting :p

I've created a few CS vids and Q3 vids myself but it's not that easy to do cool camera-effects, especially not in CS :p

Anyway I think some Valve employer stated that you can keyframe camera-movement as well as fades in and out! Which is really good, especially if it's an easy interface that comes with it. I really hope they've implemented Rewind which does NOT exist in some other engines *caugh*quake*caugh*. Kind of annoying >_<

I am currently working on a mini film about 1- 2 min long that takes place at the end of the story, there are about 10 hired goons 1 bad guy and 1 good guy, the bad guy and good guy have drawn a colt at each other while the goons all point tommy guns at the good guy.. the formation is bad guy and good guy in the middle and the goons half circle the good guy, takes place in bullet time, plus the main two dudes carry samuri swords, only the good guy will get to use his..

the rest you will have to wait and see once its done and the web site is up..

soonish (valve time)

using the source engine and maya and xsi.

The thought that a video game engine today can produce real-time graphics that far transcend computer graphics in some older movies (TRON, War Games, etc) is hilarious to me.

what is it with everyones fascination with physics in a game? for christs sake thats the one thing u can do outside of a game. go push your trashcan over or throw something across your room and watch it fall realistically....

lol it is fascinating.

But the thrill wears off very quickly.

I never thought about something like this but I think it would be pretty cool. They could do a re-make of Black Hawk Down or something too if they put the time into it to make a map and stuff like that. This engine is gonna be so powerful though, so the ability will be there, it will just take some time and dedication..

But, see, you can do that in a game without getting grounded for a month. ;)

That's why videogame physics are so important / fascinating: they can be co-opted (car stunts in GTA3) or exploited (Manipulator in HL2) to let you do things that you couldn't possibly do (or couldn't possibly get away with) in real life.

There's your difference - get away with! Otherwise, it's all the same. Besides everyone knows they're going to sit in CS: source and kick around bottles and crates. You can do that in real life...i mean i guess after kicking them around in real life you can't pull up ur m4 and blast a few terrorists but...eh you never know...

Because you get arrested when you blow up barrels or kick dead bodies around in real life ;)

I heard Valve got a visit by Matt Groening because he was interested in Source's movie capabilities for his shows.

But the cool thing about recording demo's is that you don't have to worry about framerate because when it's outputted, it's smooth and with synchronized sound, so scenes can be as complex as the engine allows.
