Awhile back (when hl2net was down) I was reading about the features of the Source engine ( http://www.valvesoftware.com/sourcelicense/enginefeatures.htm ). I found a bit of information that a lot of people were wondering about.

Physics

- More responsive world with realistic interactions
- Sounds & graphics follow from physics
- AI characters can interact with physically simulated objects
- Ropes/cables, machines, constraint systems, ragdoll physics
- Can be controlled by level design
- Kinematic animated bone followers
- Custom procedural physics controllers
- Vehicles
. Wheels slip and skid
. Realistic suspensions with springs on each wheel
. Realistic leaning during acceleration/deceleration and turning
. Individually tunable parameters such as horsepower, gearing, max speed, shift speed,
tire material, tire friction, spring tension/dampening etc.

. Multiple players in a vehicle in multiplayer
. Hovercraft support for cheaper simulation

This is definitely a good thing... suggests some kind of vehicle deathmatch or Onslaught variant from UT2k4 in multiplayer.

I would be very suprised if this wasn't the case, I don't know why they are makeing a big deal out of this particular capabuility (especially to developers who I doubt are that impressed by it).

Also the source engine can do things that won't be in HL2 but I can garantee you (HL2) mp will feature this.

I think I remember reading somewhere that Valve said it was entirely possible to have a gunner and a driver in a vehicle but that they didn't do it in HL2. (Up to the modders)

Its nice news....but is very old.

( I still love hearing it though :) )

I don't believe they said they didn't do it in the game.

They didn't say a gunner and driver, maybe they meant not that specificacly, but just driver and passenger. Doubt it, but worth a hope. :)

Yeah, but I don't think it was said in a way like 'yeah it's in the game' but more in a way like 'yes NPC's know how to drive vehicles with you' so it was suggested but not explicitly said.

I wonder if it's possible to extract all the posts in the Valve info thread and put them in a text file, that way you could search through it with ease and find answers we already have but can't find.

I'm sure if the admins have direct access to the database it's possible.

The real question is, will Half-Life 2 multiplayer be able to compete with the brilliance of Unreal Tournament 2004?

I hope the multiplayer is something new. I have trouble enjoying games like UT because I don't feel like I have any purpose in the game, the gunfights are not intense (for me that means taking cover, reloading, thinking, timing... dying quickly; not strafing and clicking a mouse button) and the situations are dull/repetitive. It just doesn't hold my interest. It's like when I first went bowling it was fun but then it became more like 'now I just have to do the exact same thing over and over again'.

I agree UT has bored me.

The only truly fun multi-player I've ever had from a game has been in Duke Nukem 3D, Half-Life, and Tribes 1 with the Renegades mod.

That's not a bad idea actually

Vehicles in MP are standard nowdays.

ever since BF1942 any MP game is incomplete without vehicles.

not mutch of a surprise that HL2 has vehicles supported.

no since operationflash point. the most kick ass war game ever. too bad it was over looked so much, just like tribes 1. that game had so much potential for community and clan play. PS I think ut2k4 mp is really fun

how do people find these wacky offshoots of the valvesoftware.com site?

I think I was reading some interview about source technology being licensed on some website (that I got from planethalflife) and it had a link to the source licensing page.

This gives me an idea for a MP mod..
Moon Racing, or Xel racing even.

You build both alien and human vehicles, and control different parameters, and race in glorious non-earth locations.. Hmm yeah that could be really fun.

I said vehicles in MP.

last time i checked 20 people playing operation flashpoint online doesnt mean anything.

the 15,000 people playing battlefield however does.

Are you saying Earth isn't glorious!? Are you.... an ALIEN!!!11?? OMG!!1

I am pretty sure about this, but aren't the vehicles in HL2 powere physicaly by the wheels themselves actually pushing against the ground? That is just COOOL. :)

Vehicles are one of those things that are turning into a cliche. I think Halo really wowed people with the potential of well done vehicles in a game, but the thing is, you really need to have a good reason to have vehicles: just tossing them into a game is sort of silly. Suddenly you need to have huge maps, which means being on foot now pretty much sucks: you have to trudge everywhere. So you have to think long and hard whether it's really worth it.

you'll know who I am on the HL2 Net games, cause ill be the one with a trade mark attack, 'uses the manipulator to fire health packs at you'

Muhahaha!

(random vehicles are great!, there great for suicide runs in TDM, or just general hit and runs, on whteva map!.. decently sized ones, OMFG people on FarCry, on Assault, suicide runs with the Buggy!, LMAO)

Far Cry (Assault) =Funnest & Funniest multiplayer ever!
