someone told me that after the leak, it was known that the source engine isnt made from scratch after all, but some kind of enhancement (?) of another engine (he told me quake2 engine), i really don't believe this, if i did i think i would be nuts, but still, can someone enlighten (?) me about this subject?

There are traces of Quake, because HL1 is Quake. There is some HL1 code in there I believe.

Source is Valve's own in-house work. They started work on it without licencing any other engine from any other company, bar the Havok Physics engine (which controls the dynamic physics in the game, such as rag-doll animations).

so......... what does all of that mean? hl2 engine isnt TOTTALY new?

It would be stupid to think that they didn't learn from the Q1 engine. But learning from something and adapting something is a different thing.

Technically, yes Tarkus. Their new engine is totally new.

The source code u have seen isn't finished either.

HL1 code (especially the AI) appears to have been used as "fill in" code, while the other stuff is being finished.

I thought because it contained HL1 code, it would be backwards compatible?

...

is it possible that source wasnt completed, and the hl1 code bits were just to replace future brand new hl2 code?

Or it could be possible that some of the hl1 code was good enough and just didn't need to be changed, why reinvent the wheel.
