Source textures too shiny? Not in DX9 mode...

alternatively you can bring down the console from in-game and type:

mat_dxlevel 90

Sweet, even easier. Thanks for the tip, Redundant.

just remember when you change dx levels in-game, it will automatically select the suggested settings for each level.

so you might want to do a double check of your video options after doing so.

Looks the same to me

In a lot of those shots, you have different aspect angles, which defeats any validity of this theory.

yep true.

Haha, it's not a theory. It's a real, live problem with Source (though not that bad), and Cliffe has already responded. This thread has served its purpose.

I'm not sure if you don't yet have CS:S or just plain didn't take the time to check out the maps in 8.1 mode before posting, but walk around any level and the unrealistic shiny textures are immediately apparent.

yes but why didn't you just tell us to run dx8 mode, instead of giving inconsistent pictures that don't prove anything?

No wonder I never experienced the "OMG! Everything is shiny ass shitz0rZ in CS:S0urZ" :) I think CS:S looks beautiful on my x800xt pe.
Office makes me kind of horny. Is that normal ?

I just gave it a whirl with my GFFX 5900 (switching from 8.1 to 9.0). Definitley less shiny. Also the shadows seem better on the faces.

Speed dropped to chugaliciousness though :(

Baaaah, I should've gotten a Radeon 9800.

thats just a silly response

you dont see the difference in the pictures he posted?
if he had said "go check it out yourself" how many people really would have?

not everyone has a dx9 (or even 8) card to test either.

My only complaint with the specularity (shinyness) and bumpmapping is the way it is inconsistantly applied. This is particularly visible on aztec. In several places the floors have very nice bumpmapping and specularity effects, but none of the walls do. Its sort of wierd to see a stone with a "carved" texture that looks totally flat and bland while below it is a stone floor thats bumpy and has a slight sheen.

i see the differences just fine. but since the pictures aren't looking at the exact same place. it could cause some to question. i know dx8 is shinier. he just did a bad job of trying to show it. no biggie.

ya know, when bricks get cold they condesate, which creates shinyness, so I dont see what your complaining about, at least it isnt freeking doom3, which doesnt even do it with the right colors.

Pics

My screenshots (which I linked to a dozen posts up) show a bit more similarity in angles.

It's simply a fact, it has been corroborated countless times on this board. Search it.

DX8

DX9

I already said the bricks in question (in DX9) have always been the ones in the garage in OFFICE. These bricks are painted with oil paint which is *glossy* (*shiny*).

For everybody's convenience, here are some moree tests.

Spec maps will solve all your problems...but....most devs opt for uniform specularity.... :naughty:

An excellent thread UnmarkedOne. You've eased some concerns I had between differences I saw in some shots which looked different to how CS: Source appeared to me iin a few areas (I'm on DX9).

However, my main worry still remains. Some of the shininess looks to be glitchy in certain areas, with a very distinct stripe-like effect is evident on some screens but not on others I've witnessed. And it doesn't always seem to be intentional.

This isn't criticising all the lighting, just this one effect which doesn't seem to run correctly. It doesn't matter what the texture is, wooden, marble, whatever, the effect doesn't seem to fit right over the surface. It does look like a bug to me, and a tricky one, because obviously some people are experiencing it, and others aren't.

In Chateau (or it could be Havana), there's a marbled floor around a garden which seems to suffer from it quite badly. And also two pairs of stairs.

This is my only real contention with the shininess, because it seems to come across as an error in certain parts. Hopefully, it's CS: Source specific rather than being inherent in Source no matter what the game.

Thinks worryingly of Half-Life 2

Yeah I see the same striped pattern on some stairs and certain wooden floors, so I know exactly what you're talking about. I don't think it's intentional either, but since it's only messed up on a handful of surfaces, it's not a huge deal. I'm running on a 9800pro, which is a pretty standard piece of hardware these days, and if it doesn't look right on my card, I think they should work on patching in a fix.

I expect to see it fixed before HL2 is out, or very soon after.

I have a GeForce FX 5900XT so it's in 8.1. I'll probably upgrade by next summer.

Hmm... I will have to try running in dx 8.1 mode when I get home tonight. From the screen shots it kinda looks nicer to me than the dx9 ones. But, that could very well be because I haven't seen 8.1 in action yet.

I tried DX9 and it looks a little nicer compared to DX8 but it also cut my FPS in half.
