How long do you think the Source engine will still be popular? By popular i mean as enough people still play Source games to play mods. Look forward, say two, three, or four years. Just a question.

Taken that even GoldSource games are still popular, and that Source is still being updated, and that it probably takes about two years before we get Episode Three, and that we might even get more content after that, I would say: it wont die tomorrow.

There are still a lot of people playing half-life 1 mods, and that's been around for nearly 10 years. Source is still being developed and new titles will be released using it for quite a while. I would easily say 5 years before popularity will start to ebb.

As long as Valve sells new products using the Source engine, it'll be a viable platform for mods.

AFAIK they stated that rather than replace the source engine they will just rewrite the rendering core every few years so concievably it should be good for years

if it doesnt break compatibility that would be awesome

I am just wanting the input for the community. A friend and I are debating whether to use Unreal Engine 3 or Source. UE3 has more potential, options, and looks easier to use. But Source is easier on the system requirements.

did they state that ? if they did it would be very cool.

UE3 hasnt got a radiocity renderer for its map, all of the lighting is realtime. And i personally hate that. Source FTW !!1

No it isn't - very few lights are dynamic. Most of it is pre-calculated.

Okay:
Popularity will start to die when they come up with Source2!
It will die out completely when duke nukem: forever comes out.

yeah it was a while ago, but all companies do this... unreal got the ball rolling with that..

essentially why would you rewrite the sound core or the input core when they are perfectly fine? so make it as modular as possible and replace the parts as needed..

This isnt to say that if they did some very drastic changes to the rendering core we'd need to re-compile our materials and maps.. but the change shouldn't be that bad.. because if they make a it a huge step with another new learning curve, no one is going to be modding for source

and to answer your question OTC, I would wait for unreal3 unless you have a lot of C++ experience.. with unreal 3 at least you can probably get something going with kismet

However, with Source, you can see who's playing the game, and make graphs :D

I like Steffi Graff.

UE3 -
* Possibly better graphics and netcode.
* Everything else unknown

Source -
* Great, realistic (non-shiny) graphics.
* Gamer tested netcode
* Unbeatable lip sync and facial expressions
* Perfectly balanced physics system
* Very high performance engine (so larger, more complex maps)
* Relatively easy for modding
* Steam support. Better distribution and feedback.
* Runs even on DirectX 6 hardware.
