SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) ? South Korean negotiators in Afghanistan have reached a deal with Taliban militants holding 19 South Korean Christian aid workers for over a month, a presidential spokesman in Seoul said Tuesday.

The group of South Koreans was kidnapped in Ghazni province on July 19. Seoul welcomes the deal, but spokesman Cheon Ho-sun cautioned that many details must still be worked out and the aid workers will not be released immediately.

Under the terms of the agreement, South Korea agreed to stick by its previous decision to withdraw its 200 non-combat troops from Afghanistan, which work mostly in an engineering and medical capacity.

In addition, Seoul will halt all Christian missionary work in Afghanistan.

What the ****, Numbers! This is a horrible move on your country's part. I don't know why my immediate action is to wonder why Numbers didn't put a stop to this, but anyway, it sets a horrible example and more people will be kidnapped as a result of South Koreas utterly irresponsible behavior.

They kidnapped 1/10th of the South Koreans who were in Afghanistan. Why the **** would you advocate a death sentence to 19 people just to keep a couple hundred involved in something they have no reason to be involved in?

These are also NOT soldiers. So if they dont give in to the demand what do you think happens to the rest.

Dude, that's how terrorism works: If you give into it, you allow it to work; to continue. Though the Koreans could use their small numbers to their advantage - Pull out the 100 guys, get the guys back, and then go back in.

Yes, but these are non-combatants. The only reason they have to stay is spite. 200 Lives is far more valuable that a proverbial middle finger.

.....

Our 'troops' in Afganistan are doctors and nurses, with engineers rebuilding houses and stuff. Why should they be endangered because of some stupid Christians that went there even after the goverment told them, 7 times, not to?

Although a lot of people here don't care what happens to them.....

However, the taliban executed people who were completely harmless. If it was up to me, I'd send in 20,000 combat troops just to say to the taliban: "**** you, you SOBs." and make the taliban cower in their caves, waiting to be annihiliated by the partrooper divisions. But meh. No reason to send in soldiers to die for people that nobody actually gives a **** about.

*Counter-Strike voice* Terrorists win!
Now Taliban will continue in kidnaping people becuase it works...

So if you were a hostage, you wouldn't want your government to get you out? :hmph:

It's not terrorism if you're the one invading.

I could care less about how weak we APPEAR to terrorists.

Really, why the hell would you be so scared of looking weak? If your nation has a stable capable defense, then what the hell do you have to loose by giving in?

People like you think they're being so god damned self righteous by not giving into the "evil Terrorists". Makes me sick.

Numbers, you aren't standing by your principles.

You are hereby expelled from the Global Anti-Terrorist Alliance. I want you to hand in your badge and your gun.

Yeah, cause this is totally the first time any terrorist orginization has tried kidnapping people...

this time you've gone too far with your idiotic ideology ..these people should die just so idiots like you feel some sense of satisfaction that they're winning the war on terrorism? little pissant, why dont you enlist this instant and put your money where your mouth is? easy to sit there and allow someone to die for your principles when you're not willing to do it yourself ..to even call out Numbers because he's south korean is a slap in the face to Numbers and his countrymen who have already died at the hands of the kidnappers. These are the people you would martyr to feed some sick ideology that is no better than those who hold them captive ..have some ****ing decency

Damn.
I think everyone that read that must have been blown backwards by that.

I have to agree - These people aren't combat troops, they are pretty much innocent civilians. What could the remaining 181 do if they stayed, throw med kits and spanners at the Taliban? I don't think so.

Your badge.

Now.

Hey, if we actually had combat troops in afganistan, I'd be going for the 'bomb the living shit out of them' approach. I mean to say, the idiots actually wrote their last will before going. Seriously, I do think that the action was inapproperiate, and that we will lose face, but it's the ****ing administration's fault.

Now, if the goverment took a different approach, like: "Send in 50k troops to destroy the taliban" I'd be happy with the decision and run over to manpower services and volunteer. But you know, there's that 19 retards still left alive.

Uhhh, dude, non-combat. The logic is quite simple. No reason to endanger innocent NON-combatants any further. Further, what possible interest could South Korea have in Afghanistan?? Their involvement, much like the rest of this "coalition" in the Middle East, is trite at best.

He's from Denmark, I think.

And read the article again, the 200 people were already going to leave.

Drebin, by giving in to the Taliban, the South Koreans are essentially just "swopping" people. What I mean by this is that instead of 19 Koreans being killed now, 100 Afghans, Coalition Force members, and civilian contractors will now die instead over just a longer period of time.

It's real simple: If you give in to terrorism, you allow it to work, and you will face more of it as a result. Doesn't matter if they were leaving anyway and you know that. Their role, contribution, whatever.. It's never OK to give in to terrorism because if you do, you become an accomplice.

12 of the 19 hostages have been released. The rest are expected to be released soon.

What would of happened if they did not agree to leave? 19 out of the 19 would be dead

Thats possible, but look at it from Korea's perspective. They have little to nothing to do with this war. Hanging 19 of their countrymen out to die does nothing for them in the long run.

Plus anyone else persecuted as the Taliban attacked more of the workers. Any the civilians hurt in the same way.

I understand why the Koreans would want to save its citizens, but doing that will cost the lives of others. If the Koreans had any sense, they'd use their smaller numbers:)D) to their advantage: Pretend to retreat, get the hostages, and then get back with superior numbers(...no, I'm not gonna... Oh, **** it! :D)

Yes, because sending more troops against an enemy that is (due to it's tactics) virtually impossible to fight, thereby pissing it off even more, is going to help.

Korea should totally go in and kick the Talibans ass.

I would support that whole heartedly.

Kim Jong-Il would have strung the Taliban up by their dangly bits and cut open their stomachs with bayonets.

And then killed the 19 hostages afterwards for shaming the Korean people.

hehe is funny how nemesis reacts to this "why you do that? dont that cuz the re will be more coalition soldier dead and that means less arabians killed,yo wussy obey!" sure korea care about theyr people first and nemesis is bordering into the offensive whit this

RJMC, you said nothing with that post, and you said it with poor spelling and grammar, too. Korea "care about theyr people", yeah, and that's the problem you dumbass: They only care about their own.

And this changes what? It isn't mine either, but if he tries to mock me and misquote me while using terrible grammar and spelling, I reserve the right to point out the fact that I don't write my message in what can only be referred to as "****wit". His spelling is the least of the problem with his post by the way; he essentially mocks me using his own terrible grammar and spelling, and just says that Korea does this because they care about their own citizens, and as I said, that's the problem; only their own.

I guess I'll repeat myself a little: This is how terrorism works - You terrorize untill you get a proper result, and when you get that, you'll be a whole lot more motivated to continue.

if your country where in a war you would support your countrymen first
cuz korea is in this war just cuz his bigdaddy USA who keeps tons of bases there to halt the comunist in the north is forcing them to it
and since people of theyr country is in a life risk is obvious that they would do something to help them
but offcourse since this war is so important cuz is about eliminating those arabians people that kills more people cuz they are muslin and being muslin is da evil them it doesnt matter to you who dies as long as muslins are dead

you dont care a heck about korea you are just mad they are not killing muslins

and I think terrorism dont work that way, sure the primordial thing the terrorist want is fame and attention for killing people, for example a video I saw of a terrorist that was sentenced in a south asian country and he smiled at the camera whit joy

so dont go around telling numbers to "how is possible your country do that!" cuz you only care if muslins die

I'm starting to think that we should go and kick the taliban's ass.

For killing 2 pure-blooded Koreans. :p

(NOTE: Pure-blooded is not a racist term, and I'm joking.)

While I don't disagree that you shouldn't give in to terrorist demands, I believe that you are exagerating the impact of this decision by South Korea. They're simply agreeing to stick to a long-standing withdrawl strategy to leave at the end of the year. No where in this artical doe it say that South Korea had plans of altering this strategy and changed because the terrorists demanded it. Again, IMO, it makes the Taliban militants look like pretty inept sons of bitches.

This is vastly different from, say, creating an exit strategy in lew of terrorist demands, couldn't you agree??

RJMC: That's just stupid. Afghans aren't even "arabians", they are a mixture of Persian ethnicities and a minority Turkish(Uzbek), etc. Your assumption that I just want to kill Muslims is just retarded and proves you have nothing to say.

Drebin, I really don't see it as any different: It might just accelerate their departure, but you are still sending a message a message that you will be leaving on behalf of the Taliban, and not on your own accord. Plus, not many people know that the Koreans were going to leave. I know I didn't. Now imagine how the media in the Arab world will look at this. Yeah, they'll probably omit a few facts like the Koreans leaving anyways and make this a victory-piece for the Taliban.

so the war on terrorism would have been better served if these innocent civilians who have NOTHING to do with the conflict bad been martyred?

why dont you volunteer to switch places with them? why the hell arent you fighting in afghanistan/iraq? you're even more of a coward for suggesting they shouldnt capitulate even though you would never dream of actually involving yourself in any way whatsoever ..besides making comments from the sidelines where you're all comfortable and out of harms way ...easy to be an armchair war supporter yelling at others telling them what they should be doing when you couldnt be bothered to do the same yourself ..you're a hypocrite and what's worse is that you dont even realise it

Nemesis, why don't you go to Afghanistan and make a deal with the taliban that you will replace one of those hostages. Then we'll see how important the death of you and those other people really is.

Your entire argument that if you give in to terrorism it means terrorism works is idiotic because the fact is that terrorism does in fact work and has worked for the last 1000 years or so. Killing 19 innocent people isn't going to change that.

Drebin, I really don't see it as any different: It might just accelerate their departure, but you are still sending a message a message that you will be leaving on behalf of the Taliban, and not on your own accord. Plus, not many people know that the Koreans were going to leave.

Well, I think a lot of people knew that the Koreans were pulling out at the end of the year. At least the people that are following this conflict knew that. They announced this a while ago...prior to these events, if I'm not mistaken. This immediatly disarms the threats of terrorism playing a role in their decision.

So, here come the Taliban militants...kidnap some Korean non-combatants...and tell Korea to get out by the end of the year, or they die. I don't know how the Arab media will portray this, but these militants look pretty dumb to me. I'm sure members of the South Korean govt. just looked at each other and shook their heads. It's one of the most idiotic terrorist demands I've seen in a long time. "I know you're leaving at the end of the year, but if you want to see these people alive, you'll leave at the end of the year..." WHAT???!!! I don't see one possible way they can spin this in their favor...as some kind of victory or something.

Look, there's no sense in blowing this out of proportion. It's angering to see govt. give in to the demands of these fools whenever it happens, but I don't think this is one of those times.
